MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Today’s Offertory, “Prayer of Saint Gregory,” was composed by

Alan Hovhaness (1911 – 2000), one of the most prolific composers

of the 20th century. Composing over 500 works, Hovhaness wrote

symphonies, choral works, ballets, operas and chamber music. Alan

Vaness Chakmakjar was born near Boston, Massachusetts, the son

of an Armenian father and a Scottish mother. He studied

composition at the esteemed New England Conservatory of Music

and while there took the pseudonym Alan Hovhaness. In the 1940s

he developed a keen interest in Armenian culture, learning the

Armenian language and serving as organist at an Armenian church.

The subject of “Prayer of Saint Gregory” is St. Gregory the

Illuminator, who brought Christianity to Armenia in the early 4th

century. The piece, which Hovhannes called “a prayer in darkness,”

depicts Gregory’s prayers from prison, where he spent 12 years.

We appreciate Conrad Jones’ contributions to our worship

services today. A native of Long Island, New York, Mr. Jones is the

principal trumpet of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Previously, he served as principal trumpet of the Tucson Symphony

Orchestra. In addition to his chamber music playing, Mr. Jones has

performed as guest principal trumpet with the Detroit Symphony,

Phoenix Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic and CityMusic

Cleveland.

Choirs resume rehearsals Wednesday, August 21st

Do you like to sing? Maybe you’ve sung in a choir before and are

looking to dust off those vocal cords? Or maybe being part of a

choir is a new idea. Choir is a great place for spiritual formation and

artistic expression, and fall is a great time to start! Northminster has

options for all ages. Children and youth rehearse weekly and sing in

worship once a month. Chancel Choir rehearses weekly and sings

each Sunday in worship. There is no registration process – simply

show up to the first rehearsal.
