St Paul lived in the first century AD, when the
dominant religions were all pagan. Pagan religions
were based on a belief in the power of external
rituals. These sometimes consisted of sacrifices in
which animals were slaughtered, grain was burned,
or wine was poured out. They also sometimes
consisted of ritual dances, prayers, songs, or similar
actions. In every case, however, the power of the
worship, its supposed ability to convince the false
god to send blessings on the worshipper, depended
on the exact performance of the ritual. It was like a
gymnastics routine in the Olympics: if the ritual
wasn't performed with perfect precision, the
worshipper would get a bad score, and the gods
would either ignore the prayer or get angry. This
pagan focus on external rituals had also seeped into
Jewish practices at the time. Throughout his
writings, therefore, St Paul is constantly warning the
early Christians against falling into ritualism. He is
training the early Church to have a close personal
relationship with God, not a cold, distant
relationship clogged with empty formalities. This is
why he writes to the Romans, as we just heard,
"offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God, your spiritual worship." In other
words, the Christian's relationship with God isn't
reduced to a few rituals and prayers - everything we
do is meant to be worship. Our actions, our words,
our decisions, the way we live our daily lives - all
these things are ways for us to show that we love
Christ and want to follow him. This is a radical new
concept of religion - a religion built on a personal
friendship with the one true God who became man
in Jesus Christ. And it required as St Paul wrote,
that the Christians "be transformed by the renewal
of their mind."

Prayer for Expectant Mothers
Dear Father, we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs. Comfort their mothers & fathers
during the time they are growing & develop-ing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of per-sons the strength to come into this world, to
fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, &
loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.
Amen.
IMPORTANT INFO:
1. This year, high dose, FLU vaccines, recommended
for Senior Citizens, will be available in early September in
doctors’ clinics, pharmacies & supermarkets. Check with
your doctor or pharmacy. According to the CDC (Center
for Disease Control & Prevention) the FLU season in the
USA doesn’t really begin until October, peaking between
December & February, but because of changes brought
about by COVID-19, NOW is the time to think
about WHEN, HOW, & WHERE you’ll get a FLU shot.
2. ABSENTEE BALLOTS for the 11/2/20 General
Election, are available for registered voters, age 60+. The
first day to request a ballot was 8/3/20. The last day will

Phone Ministry
During this pandemic, many of us have found
ourselves isolated from family & friends.
I want to introduce myself.
My name is Phyllis Marshall
and my phone number is 731-668-5555. I have a phone ministry called Home Touch.
I call parishioners that might enjoy a phone call just
for touching base with the “outside” world.
If you are recovering from surgery, illness, or have
no one in your home to talk with, please call me.
I will call you once a week just to chat and share the
love God has for us.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
A Prayer for Protection in time of Pandemic
O Mary,
you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation & of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the
Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while
remaining steadfast in faith.
O loving Mother,
you know what we need, & we are confident you will provide
for us as at Cana in Galilee.
Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician,
for those who have fallen ill,
for those who are vulnerable,
and for those who have died.
Intercede also for those charged with protecting the
health and safety of others and
for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.
Help us, O Mother of Divine Love,
to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by
Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our
sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to
the glory of the Resurrection.
Amen.
Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God.
In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always
from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Amen.
