Art ExhibitOctober 5–22, 2017 | Art + Media Lab at the Isabel

Come and witness an astonishing burst of colour with the paintings of Austrian-Canadian artist Ernestine Tahedl, whose art

is inspired by the composers of the romantic era including Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, and Johannes Brahms. Her colours

appear to explode, recreating the sounds and chords of the music she hears. Through her art, Ernestine Tahedl visualizes

sounds and the emotions triggered by the music, with colours and sound forming a new unity.

An Artist Statement—Ernestine TahedlFor me, the Series comes close to a musical experience and was painted and inspired while listening to classical music reflected in the titles of the works. I feel these paintings are a more direct, human and spiritual expression without confinement of the motif or formal restriction; yet still consist of all those elements that I have explored in my work over the years. I hope that spirituality and serenity are integral to my work. Colour and light are factors that guide my work; colour to me is light.

“All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music.” – WALTER PATER (1839-1894)

About Ernestine TahedlAustrian-Canadian artist Ernestine Tahedl received a Master’s Degree in graphic art from the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts. Following graduation, she collaborated with her father, Professor Heinrich Tahedl, in stained glass artist commissions until she immigrated to Canada. Her work is represented in public, private, and corporate collections and galleries in Canada, the United States, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Japan. She is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and is the recipient of many national and international awards. The works displayed in this exhibit are acrylic on canvas.

REBELS AGAINST TIME: The Tides of RomanticismDuo Kleinhapl & Woyke, Cello and PianoSunday, November 5, 2017 at 2:30 PM

Some rebels, such as Beethoven and Piazzolla, forge far ahead into the future and are the revolutionaries against tradition. Others – such as Mendelssohn and Jacob Gade – firmly entrench themselves in esteemed musical traditions. This program features the award-winning duo of Austrian cellist Friedrich Kleinhapl and pianist Andreas Woyke, who will perform sonatas by Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Franck and tangos by Gade and Piazzolla. The New York Times describes the “unimpeachable virtuosity and a thrilling unanimity of spirit” of the Duo Kleinhapl & Woyke. This celebrated duo has appeared in renowned concert venues around the world including Vienna’s Musikverein and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

LOUIS LORTIE, PianoSunday, November 19, 2017 at 2:30 PM

The London Times describes the playing of Canadian pianist Louis Lortie as “ever immaculate, ever imaginative,” and has identified the artist’s “combination of total spontaneity and meditated ripeness that only great pianists have.” Louis Lortie loves the challenge of assembling a program with that “je-ne-sais-quoi” that cannot be accessed through the internet and that can only be brought to life in a recital. Audience members will be treated to Chopin, Schubert and more!

CHARLES RICHARD-HAMELIN, Piano Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 2:30 PM

Prize winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition, Concours musical international de Montréal and Seoul International Music Competition, this young Canadian musician is standing out as one of the most important pianists of his generation. Energy abounds as the remarkable Tafelmusik orchestra performs Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, and the dynamic symphonies by two of Mozart’s mentors, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Christoph Bach.

Soundstreams Canada TAN DUNWater Passion After St. MatthewLawrence Cherney, Artistic DirectorConducted by David FallisWith Choir 21 Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 7:30 PM

“[Water Passion’s] world premiere in Stuttgart…was greeted with an ecstatic 15-minute standing ovation. Like its model, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, it transcends language, cultural and religious divides.” —THE TIMES, LONDON

Tan Dun is an internationally celebrated Chinese contemporary classical composer and conductor, most widely known for his scores of the movies Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, the world premiere of The First Emperor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as his music for the medal ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In Water Passion, seventeen dramatically lit water bowls adorn the stage in this reimagining of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, where Tan Dun explores universal themes of birth, death, and resurrection using water as a symbol of transition from one stage to another. Varied cultural influences also shape the string writing, drawing upon Tibetan percussion and instruments that evolved along the ancient Silk Road. The distinctly modern soundscape is cast against elemental, tactile impressions of water in this remarkable intercultural setting of the timeless liturgical text.

PRESENTS

SWEATFriday, July 28, 2017 at 7:30 PM

CANADIAN PREMIERE TOUR OF THIS 70-MINUTE CHAMBER OPERA BY JULIET PALMER AND ANNA CHATTERTON.

Sweat is an ‘a capella’ opera for 10 singers about women in the global garment industry.

Sweat takes us inside the world of the sweatshop, where the individual ambitions of workers and management are set against the movement toward unionization. Scored for chorus and five soloists performing in English as well as Cantonese, Tamil and Hungarian, Sweat seeks to bring the audience into the heart of a contemporary sweatshop. What do these workers dream of, sewing sleeves all day? Was life better in the village left behind? Plunging headfirst into the ethical conundrums of the garment trade, the work offers a window into the lives of the workers who clothe us. Sweat is a response to our globalized world, in which we never meet the women who sew our clothing and we rarely think about their working conditions.

DOLLHOUSEColeman Lemieux & CompagnieSaturday, November 18, 2017 at 7:30 PM

Presented by Tonedeaf, Kingston’s Festival of Adventurous Sound Performance, in collaboration with the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.

CONCEPT, DANCE, PERFORMANCE: BILL COLEMANMUSIC, SOUND, VISUALS: GORDON MONAHANADDITIONAL DESIGN: PIERRE LAVOIE & DAVID GAUCHERRun time: 1 hour

“No other choreographer creates one-of-a-kind events as mystical, unpretentious, and full of wonder,” states the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of choreographer and dancer Bill Coleman. In Dollhouse, he plays the role of modern fakir as he suffers through what at times are almost comic situations on his way to a symphonic chaos of sight and sound. Considering the intense concerns of contemporary times, the visual metaphor of a man drowning in his surroundings is timely. Tap dancing, performance art and action intermingle with mechanical and electronic manipulated objects, handmade and found, rendering rhythms equally sonic and visual. Disruptive and surprising, Dollhouse walks a unique line of Artaudan fiction and slapstick with the performer acting simultaneously as instrument and conductor. The internationally acclaimed composer/ sound artist Gordon Monahan, a recipient of the Governor-General’s Award in the Arts, will also be creating all the sound live on stage. This program is a remarkably creative feat of dance and music in the 21st century.
