As most of you are aware my husband and I recently moved, downsizing from a huge house (4800 square feet) to a house less than half that size. Common sense tells one that not everything from the large house is going to fit into the smaller one, so numerous truck and trunk-loads of stuff were taken to donation at Goodwill, and several even to the dump. Our sons both had boxes stored in our basement too so they needed to step up. It has been a huge “season of divestment”!

Recent natural disasters and particularly the massively destructive fires in California have devastated countless homes and neighborhoods. Many survivors have returned to nothing but ashes. One couple, as they surveyed the remains, said: “It was only stuff. We and our neighbors are blessed to be alive!”

Many of us accumulate more than we need, while others lack the basic necessities. In this season of both Thanksgiving and Stewardship, we can be thankful for the blessings, and yes, the possessions we enjoy, while at the same time being mindful of their proper place in our lives. Some things are necessary for meeting our basic needs, all the rest? Frosting on the cake. But what about those who have no “cake”? If one is physically hungry or lacking shelter, it is hard to think about spiritual things. We have a responsibility to care for not only the spiritual “hungers” and needs of people as well as their physical needs. Balancing all of those—in our personal and in our corporate life together—is an ongoing challenge.

It is not always easy to have a heavenly perspective regarding earthly possessions (even, including bank balances!) Jesus says in Matthew 6:19-24 -- “Don’t store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stolen. Store them in heaven where they will never lose their value and are safe from thieves. If your profits are in heaven, your heart will be there too. If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. 23 But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be! You cannot serve two masters: God and money. For you will hate one and love the other, or else the other way around.”

I learned several things in our “Season of Divestment”:

1—Once I started the process of letting go, it got easier! I actually felt lighter as I actually, physically and emotionally,

let go of things. I was in fact, eager to keep going and lighten the load.

2—I began to see my possessions from a new perspective: Was this item life-giving or adding meaning to my life in

some way, OR was it life-draining, taking time and energy from me that I’d prefer to spend elsewhere? Does it add

value to my life, or not? What is the “cost” of holding onto this item? What might I “save” if I let go of it?

Friends, as we spend some time focusing on gratitude and giving during the month of November, I hope that you will

give some serious thought to these questions.

Additionally, as move forward in our Jubilee year, we will be considering our priorities in ministry and how those are

reflected not only in our financial budget, but in our church programs, our staffing, and more. Please join me in prayer

as the elders, deacons and staff seek the Lord’s guidance in our stewardship of all our gifts in the coming year.

PHILIPPINE MISSION TRIP UPDATE

The Children’s Center and Church Roof Repair work started when we arrived in August and continued after

the team left for home in the United States. By the end of September, both projects were completed

just in time for the rainy season. With this, the Bonbon congregation is very appreciative and thankful for

the help our Calvary church family has extended to them.

During the mission activities, we met the Kalanda Family of three who used to live under a coconut tree next to

the church. When it rained their only refuge was under a nearby bridge. Leonardo Kalanda Sr. and his wife Rose

collect empty cans, plastics and bottles and sell them for a living. We really wanted to help this family. The least

we could offer was hiring them as church caretakers. For them, the work is stable and is a life-changing

experience. Also, their son Leonardo Jr. is having some tutorial lessons from the Faith In Action Ministry scholars

because at his age he hardly speaks, even the dialect. Now Leonardo Jr. is already involved in all church

activities. Momentarily, the family is staying at the Children's Center.

Starting in October, we have expanded the Faith In Action Ministry Scholarship Program. We have added

10 more scholars which brings the total to 50 grantees. With this, we owe our thanks to the Calvary

Presbyterian Church and Mary Ann Dacus for their continuing support to the program. This is one of

the programs that is showing great and positive results. We hope to increase the number of recipients

in the near future.

The Full Belly Program which was started during the 2014 Calvary

Mission trip has been adopted by the United Church Of Christ in

the Philippines Oro Hill Top Conference. Churches that are

members of the conference take their turns in providing food for

the homeless and the needy in the surrounding areas.

125th Anniversary Cookbook

Greetings! Many of you know that Calvary Presbyterian Church is putting

together a cookbook as part of the 125th Anniversary Celebration. A full

page of information on the cookbook project was included in the October

issue of The Calvary Caller. We will have opportunities to pre-order books

sometime after the New Year. The cookbooks should be ready to print in

April and available in June.

Please share some of your best recipes with us. Recipes may be

submitted online (See Instructions Below), via email, or on paper. Please

include a ‘Note’ to include information such as why the recipe is a favorite, did a special person give you the

recipe or did you find it in a magazine or cookbook, or is there a particular time of year or celebration when

you usually make the recipe, etc. that will make the cookbook more interesting.

Although we have requested certain types of recipes during certain months you may submit recipes in any

category (including This & That) at any time.

Session Highlights from the October 10th Meeting. Some of the following items were presented and if needed, approved: Approved Winter Shelter Check-in from Dec. 1, 2017-Feb. 28, 2018 using the

NE classroom upstairs in the CE Building, nightly from 6:30-7:15 P.M. Congregational Meeting scheduled for Sunday, November 19 following

worship to receive the report of the Nominating Committee, elect officers, and an update from the Finance Ministry Team.

Adult Sunday School Class on Celtic Christianity concludes November 5. Facilitator Amy Besola wraps up this adult study with reflection and looking forward to how the spiritual practice of Celtic Christianity will

continue to enrich our daily lives.

A few thoughts from your Calvary Librarian, Marilyn White

Out of miserable pain comes joy. Without sacrifices, we wouldn’t enjoy the joy. We’ve all heard these tired expressions that become cliché, but there is truth in them. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was an intelligent and deep-thinking woman born in 1851 who would

eventually write such wonderful hymns as “When We All Get to Heaven” and “Will there be any Stars in My Crown.” A painful spinal injury—likely caused by a reckless student in the class she was teaching—forced her to live out her remaining years bed-ridden. But she continued to make a difference by contributing these wonderful lyrics. When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be When we all see Jesus We'll sing and shout the victory. I think that one of the hardest things in Christianity is to be joyful when a loved one is transferred to the church triumphant. I did a bit of research on this topic, and found theologians believe that upon death our souls are transferred to heavenly rest and relieved from the dangers and pain of fighting against the devil. We no longer need to worry that Satan can intercept our path to heaven. Losing a loved one will never be easy, but try to focus on the rejoicing at the pearly gates when they open to allow us to tread the streets of gold. After all, heaven is home!

At the end of September I was able to attend a conference in Federal Way called ECHO: Urban Youth Workers Conference. Though

we are not in an urban setting, our youth and the youth in our community do face some similar circumstances. The conference

was held just on one day, but some of the things I experienced there were amazing. I attended two workshops during the course

of the conference and I’d like to share with you some of the things I came away with.

The first workshop was a panel of people, who worked with youth who are marginalized. One of the panelists worked with

juveniles who are detained in juvenile detention. The other two panelists work with New Horizons, a Christian organization that

works with homeless youth to help connect them with God, while helping them work to get off the streets.

The discussion was interesting as the panelists talked about their ministries and how they connect with these youth in places and

times in their lives where they are often most reluctant to accept the love and grace of our Savior. What was most interesting to

me, as I listened to the panelists and the facilitator, it was so obvious that their goal in their jobs, in their ministries, is the desire to

lift these kids up out of their difficult, sometimes tragic situations and to just show them the pure and honest love of God. And

then I thought, “uh, DUH Erin.” Of course that is their mission. Isn’t that the mission of any of those of us who love and worship

God, who believe in Jesus as our Savior? Isn’t that what we hope for, when we share our faith? When we talk to others? I

wondered why that would be such a revelation for me. Then I realized what it was. As Christians, as members of a church, we

often let that be the upfront reason for sharing our faith, for inviting people to church, and for welcoming others in. However,

Christians all over have gotten “kind of bad rap” about having ulterior motives. We want the church to grow, we want more people

filling the seats during worship, and we want a thriving Sunday school and youth group. And while those things aren’t bad,

sometimes they lead us to a competitive mentality. We compare our church to other churches. Our ideology to other ideologies,

our attendance numbers to the attendance numbers of other places, and we want people to believe precisely what we believe,

with no room for variance.

I’m not sure we ever realize that we do it sometimes, but we do. We want our way to be right, we want our church to be big, and

we want others to agree with us. When do those things become more important than the word of God, than his love, his

forgiveness, and his grace? Sometimes, humans just don’t get it, do we? Love each other. Help those who need help. Lift people

up. Why is it so hard for us to do these things?

Don’t get me wrong. I know that the attendance of the church is important, that numbers have a place, and that bringing people to

Christ is what He asks us to do. Why do we so often become overwhelmed with the importance of how, and not so much with the

importance of what? God Loves Each of Us. Jesus suffered and died to save each of us. Those facts don’t change if people attend

a different house of worship on Sunday morning, if they are different than we are in the way they live their lives, or if they are

following the strict guidelines that we think should be followed.

We want to share God’s love. We want to share Jesus’ sacrifice. Even Kevin and I, as youth leaders, sometimes get worried about

numbers of kids, about making sure those kids get to worship, and about pushing them to believe. The truth is this: we are here to

share the love and grace of God. Our job is to plant the seed, to share the love, to support however we can. God is the one who

does the growing. God is the one who builds the faith. We are not so powerful that we can make decisions for everyone about

how their faith should look. God sees a much wider vision than we do. He loves much more deeply. Our job is to build the bench.

We are building the bench of the next group of Christians that will be running the church, not Calvary, the broader church of Christ.

And each of us as believers has the responsibility to pass on the things that God would want to us pass on, not those that divide us

as different Christian groups, but that which brings us together as one church.

Getting ready for some football?

The youth have just what you need!

We will be selling yummy pizzas starting October 1st.

They are Take – N – Bake Pizzas.

Order on Sunday, the pizzas will be made the following Saturday and ready for pick up after church on the

following Sunday. What better way to enjoy following your favorite football team?

(Not a football fan? Not to worry, pizzas are good for having with whatever you enjoy doing.)

Proceeds from the pizza sales will support youth activities including but not limited to:

bible camp, retreats, mission and outreach projects.

A variety of handmade Blanket Cards will be for sale in the narthex every Sunday beginning November 12 through December 17. The cards are $5.00 apiece and tell the recipient that the donation goes to Church World Service to provide blankets for those in need.

On Sunday, October 15, Jason Welle, CWS Regional Representative, spoke to the congregation about how important the blanket project serves as security for those affected by disasters or displacement. He recognized long-standing members of the Blanket Card Committee and presented Calvary with a beautiful wooden plaque with colored pictures as a “Thank You” honoring our 25 year-old legacy of giving to CWS. In November we gather together to ask the Lord’s Blessing. In honor of our 125th Anniversary and as way of sharing

our blessings with those in need in our community Calvary will be filling a basket in the Narthex with the “FOOD OF

THE MONTH”. At the end of each month all the items collected will be given to the Enumclaw Food Bank located in

the City of Enumclaw building next to the Senior Center on Cole Street.

Do you know that the Enumclaw Food Bank started at Calvary during the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Robert Sargent? By

supporting this project we are celebrating our Legacy of Serving Others in God’s Name.

Just the other day, I was sent a very touching e-mail that I would like to share with you. It is an essay an 8 year-old boy

wrote. His assignment was to describe God. I have reproduced it here because it is so innocent and guiltless. My hope

is that it will bring a smile to you as it did to me. It is one of those events that help lighten the load.

EXPLANATION OF GOD:

'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care

of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he

doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.'

'God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.' 'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.' 'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.' 'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K.' 'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.' 'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.' 'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God! Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.' 'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.' 'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases.’

From The Eagle’s Nest Many people, myself included, are still reeling from the toll that

natural disasters and violence have taken on our residents and the

land and its inhabitants. It has taken its toll not only on the victims,

but on those who have witnessed the destruction. Through all of

that, there are some brighter moments that have eased the discour-

agement. Volunteers have stepped up to go to the areas most

affected. We have prayed and sent help in many forms. Sometimes

just when we need a lift, some event or persons’ encouragement

have helped lift spirits.
