ATCHISON RAILROADS.The country traversed by the Roads through Kansas an d

Nebraska is growi ng with wonderful vigor an d rapidity.Thriving towns are springing up like magic, farms are being-improved in every direction, and the hardy pioneers are settling th e country far beyond the terminal points of theseRailroads. Th e trade of this vast region, a dream of empire,is naturally tributary to Atchison. The Railroads stretching ou t from this city are the arteries of the country theytraverse, an d they bring to their common center its business.

    T H E A T C H I S O N AN D N E B R A S K A I s one of the mostimportant lines radiating from this city. It s general courseis northwest, and its terminus at Lincoln, th e capital of Nebraska. Col. L. VV To wne ha s been General Superintendent of the road since th e summer of 1875. T h e generaloffices an d machine shops of the Compapy ar e located atthis city. J>

During th e past few years the Company has expendeda large amount of money in its road bed. The track atdif-ferent points has been raised ; new and substantial bridgesand culverts have been constructed, and the A. and N. nowhas one of the most, solid an d substantial road-beds in theWest. To say that this work was done under th e directionof Col. Towne is a sufficient guarantee that it was well done, for he is a thorough railroad man.

The Atchison an d Nebraska is one of the most important, and has always been one of the most popular, roads inthe West, it is officered throughout by competent, popularand energetic railroad men, a nd we are glad to know thatit is doing a large an d steadily increasing business. Noroad in all the country traverses a more beautiful an d fertileregion than that along th e line of the A. and N.

C H I C A G O , R O C K I S L A N D AN D PACIFICThis greatRqad is the only line from Atchison to Chicago that is controlled an d operated by,one management. Maj. H. Glea-son is the General Agent at this city, an d M. McClure th etraveling agent. It s most extreme western terminus is atAtchison, and it is extremely popular with shippers an dtravelers on account of its first class accommodatio ns an dpromptness of its agents, in doing business.

T H E M I S S O U R I P A C I F I C RAILROADThis great throughline, between Atchison and St. Louis, a distance of330 miles, with its western terminus at Atchison, and its headquartersat St. Louis, is fast becoming popular for all travel andfreight from the South, Southwest and East. T h e ticketagent, Mr. Charles W. Styles, we must say, enjoys rather anenviabl e reputation among competi ng agents, and Mr. J. W.Anderson, freight agent, is always found ready to attend toall the freight in a satisfacterilv manner.GRAIN TRADE.

The development of the grain trade of Atchison, duringthe past three years, has been very rapid. T he first elevatorwas opened for busin ess less than three years ago, an d Usproprietors were compelled to double its storage capacitiesin less than six months thereafter

Atchison has three of the largest and best constructedElevators in the West, and in addition several firms are en gaged in purchasing grain at this city. This business is-onlyin its infancy, ft is growing prodigiously every year. T hebest grain -producin g region on the contin ent would sendalmost the whole bulk of its export products through Atchison, if this city ha d adequate facilities forhandling the trade. All the Elevators now here, and all the grain buyers nowhere, have not the facilities for handling'the business thatought to come to Atchison, as a distributing and transferringpoint, from a single one of the three great roads leadingfrom this city into th e interior. Because th e cereals of theregions traversed by each of these roads can be handledmore advantageously in Atchison than at any other point inthe Missouri Valley, if the capital and machinery necessaryto handl e th em w ere provided.

FLO VRING MILLS.The Flouring Mills of Atchison arebuilt on the improv

ed plans, with all the modern improvements. There arefour in numberthree in operation now, and the fourth willbe completed and re*ady for business by the first of February 1879, and we must say, that it is a model structure, withfour runs of burrs, and a benefit to its owners and a creditto the city, and no doubt a safe investment.MISSOURI RIVER BRIDGE.

    This beautiful structure was commenced on the 9th day .of August, 1S74, and completed on the 31st of July, 1875.C . W E B E R ' S ,

CHURCHES.Easte rn people very often hesita te about removing towhat they call the " far West "and they include Kansas inthe designation. We might appeal to such people to comeand see for themselves. Kansas is. especially proud of her

development in all interests which conc ern the home, andall institutions and privileg es which make home life pl easantand attractive. And the city of Atchison has attained sucha development, in this regard, that the best life and societyof New England, social, educational or religious, does notexcel that exemplified and illustrated in the conditions ofhome-life here. Te n religious denominations have prosperous organizations here. The church buildings are generallyelegant and costly structures, fully equal in size, beauty andarchitecture and substantial construction, to those of anyEastern city having double the population of AtchisonSCHOOLS AJiV ACADEMIES.

Educational and religious privileges are justly regardedas the basis of cultivated and orderly society, and both oithese interests have certa inly received due attention andattained a remarkable development in Atchison. It used tobe the case in the East, that the court house was the largestand most showy ediffice in every county seat, while theschool house was a low, dingy building, as dismal in its outside appearance as it was squalid in its interior furnishing. The Atchison Court House is a fair-sized two story building, surmounted by a belfry,'but the contrast between it and theCentral School building, near by, makes the former looksmall and.mean.

We must say that the free educational advantages ofAtchison is far superior to that of other towns of its size inthe West, where children of the poor as well as those of therich, reap the same privileges.A large portion of the above information of the Historyof Atchison, we are under obligations to the Champion for.We copy it, for we think every word of it true, and it is amere matter of time when Atchison will be a city of from25,000 to 35,000 souls, as she has already gained an enviable reputation abroad from her rival cities in the MissouriValley. She bids welcome, with open han ds, and says to themerchant, manufacturer, tiller of the soil, and to the tourist, come, see, and abide.
