    Rewards: Worthy or

    Worthless?Lesson Objective

The students will understand the Judgment Seat of Christ is where He will determinethe worth or worthlessness of the works done by each believer during their life onearth.

    2 Corinthians 5:10

Why will Christians appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ?

Justin had worked hard to get here. From his freshman year until now, he had listenedto his coach and trained for the high hurdles. Now, in his senior year, he wascompeting for the district championships in front of hundreds of people. The startinggun went off, and it seemed like the race ended almost as soon as it started. In just amatter of seconds, Justin had won the Districts. As he proudly received his awardmedal, he reflected on the day four years ago when he almost gave up track becausehe wasnt sure he could do it. Now, he was glad he had been faithful in his trainingand preparation.

The Christian life is often described as a race. God wants to reward those who run,but we have to enter the race. Then, just like Justin, we must train and run in such away that we obtain the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24). The way we live our lives nowdetermines whether we receive many or few rewards in Heaven.

Bema Seat: The judgment seat that contestants stood before at the end of an ancientOlympic race to receive rewards for running well.

Judgment Seat of Christ: The event where all believers and only believers will bejudged by Christ to determine the worth or worthlessness of the works they did whileon earth and to reward them accordingly.

    Introduction

    Object Lesson

Teachers Note: Show an image of the bema seat in ancient Corinth and ask thestudents if any of them know what it is. After letting them to give their answers,

show the image of the modern Olympic Games awards platform and ask them what itis.

    Lecture

The two images you just saw are actually the same thing. They are both platformsused for an awards ceremony. The second image was more familiar to you since westill observe the Olympic Games today. The first image was unfamiliar to us, but itwould have been very familiar to the people of the Apostle Pauls day. It is known asthe bema seat, or judgment seat, and it is located in ancient Corinth. In Pauls day,the city of Corinth was home to a great athletic event known as the Isthmian Games. The bema seat is where contestants stood at the end of a race to receive their reward.Paul used this imagery frequently to help believers, like those in Corinth, understand

that they will one day stand before Jesus Christ in judgment (read 2 Corinthians5:10).

    Mad Gab Competition

Tonight we are going to discover truths about the Judgment Seat of Christ by havinga little friendly competition between the girls and the guys. We are going to play agame called Mad Gab. Heres how the game works.

Both teams will be simultaneously asked three questions about the Judgment Seatof Christ. For each question, teams will be given a clue in the form of a madgab phrase. The words themselves make no sense, but when repeated in the

right way, the way they sound makes a meaningful statement. The team that can give the correct answer within 20 seconds will win 100 points. If no one can figure out the phrase with just the Mad Gab clue, both teams will be

given a Scripture reference or references as additional clues. Each team willthen have another 20 seconds to answer the question.

We will award 50 points to the first team to get the correct answer with thescriptural clue.

Lets get started! The first question in our game is:

Topic Clue A: Subjects of judgment at the Judgment Seat of ChristMAD GAB Clue: Al, Chris, Tons

Scripture Clue (if needed): Romans 14:10Answer: All Christians

    Lecture

    A. All Christians will appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ. (Read Romans14:10)The Book of Romans was written by Paul to believers in Rome. In this passage, when Paul asks the Romans why they are judging their brothers, he is talkingabout the relationship of one Christian to another. The point Paul is making is thatone Christian should not think more highly of himself than he does of his fellow

Christians. Paul sums up this warning by reminding the readers that all Christianswill be judged. Because we will one day stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ,we should strive to be acceptable to God (2 Corinthians 5:9-10).

Lets move on to round two of MAD GAB. The second question is:

Topic Clue B:What is the basis for judgment at the Judgment Seat of Christ?

MAD GAB Clue: Axe shins and Moat I.V.sScripture Clues (if needed): 2 Corinthians 5:10; 1 Corinthians 4:5Answer: Actions and Motives

    Lecture

    B. Christ will judge all Christians on the basis of their actions and motives.

If you were going to have to take a test at school, it would certainly be to youradvantage if you knew ahead of time what the test was going to cover. God hasgiven us insight into the areas of our lives that will be examined at the JudgmentSeat of Christ, so there is no excuse for not being prepared.

The first area seems pretty basic, doesnt it? It would only make sense that Christ

would judge our actions. But it doesnt stop with the way we live on the outside.God looks at our motives, too. Most people never consider that God knows whywe do thing things we do, but Gods Word is so powerful that it can discern whatwe think about as well as the intentions of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12have astudent read). That can be a pretty frightening concept.

Lets take a closer look at these two areas.

    1. Believers actionsClearly, we will give an account to Christ for our actions as believers. But howwill these actions be judged? Lets answer this question by asking a few morerelated questions and discovering what the Word of God says.

When examining our actions, what will Christ be judging? (Have a studentread 2 Corinthians 5:10 again.)

Jesus, the only perfect Judge, will determine whether our works have beengood or bad. Jesus Christ, as God, is the only One suited to judge mankindsince He has perfect understanding and a perfect sense of justice(Deuteronomy 32:4). He cannot make a bad call. There are no gray areaswith Jesus or dilemmas like we have when we try to make right judgments.Jesus will also make the right call the first time. There will be no lengthyplay under review time like the ones we see in a football game. Jesusmakes the right call the first time, every time. Thats because His judgmentis based on the perfect law of God (Psalm 19:7, read).

Why is Christ judging our works? (Ephesians 2:10, have a student read)

A Christian is Gods handiwork. Although we are sinners by birth and bychoice, God recreates us through the work of Christ on the cross. Hecreated us in Christ Jesus for the purpose of doing good works. When wedo these good works, others will see them and glorify God (Matthew 5:16).The great part is that since we are Gods handiwork, He is the One Whoproduces those good works in us. We must simply yield our lives to Him asvessels for Him to work through. He expects us to yield to Him and become

active in these good works, and He will hold us accountable to make themost of each opportunity that He provided for us to obediently serve Him.

    2. Believers motivesWhat you are about to hear is very, very important in order to understand whatthe Judgment Seat of Christ is all about. It isnt only our actions but also ourmotives! Some believers in Pauls day, which we also see today, deceived

themselves into thinking that that their outward works were all that mattered toGod. While it is true that works matter, good works done with the wrongmotives are worthless. Paul tells us about the judgment of our motives inseveral key passages.

We are not to judge one another (1 Corinthians 4:5have a student read).

We must leave judgment to God. Since Paul had been judged by some ofhis detractors in Corinth, he reminded the church that only God has all theknowledge to judge the actions and motives of people. The emphasis in 1Corinthians 4:5 is on the hidden motives that men cannot see. As men andwomen, all we can do is recognize what we see, but God sees within the

heart of men to determine the motives behind every action. Lets look at 1Samuel 16:7 (have a student read). Our passage in 1 Corinthians 4:5 assuresus that God reveals those hidden things of darkness as well as themotives of the heart. On a positive note, we can also rest assured that God will recognize ouractions and motives that warrant reward. Even good deeds done in secretwill ultimately be rewarded in the open (Matthew 6:1-4). The praise wemay have earned as a result of right motives will come from God.

Lets move on to our final round of MAD GAB to see the purposes for the JudgmentSeat of Christ.

Topic Clue C:What is the purpose of judgment at the Judgment Seat of Christ?MAD GAB Clue: Debt or men Reah Wards.Scripture Clue (if needed): 1 Corinthians 3:14-15

    Answer: Determine Rewards

    Lecture

    C. Christians stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to determine what

    rewards they receive.

(Read 1 Corinthians 3:9-15.) In this passage, Paul paints a word picture using abuilding as a representation of the church. As in any other building, the quality ofmaterials and construction techniques has an effect on the soundness of thebuilding. Paul says the foundation must be Jesus Christ (v. 10). In the followingverses, Paul refers to the rest of the materials that should make up the church:sound doctrine and sound teaching will build a church made of gold, silver, andprecious stones (vv. 12-13).

But a church is made up of individual believers, and it is the individual believerwho will stand before Christ at the Judgment Seat. In 1 Corinthians 3:13, Pauluses a singular statement about how the believers service will be judged. Noticehis emphasis on each ones work, and the testing each of these works. Rewards, then, are to be based on individual faithfulness. Lets now take a closer look atthese rewards.

    5/13

    1. The believer receives rewards for actions that Christ judges as good (read 1Corinthians 3:14 again). For the believer, godly works result in rewards. But rewards do not comeeasilythey are not free gifts; they must be earned. An athlete does not earnan award simply for putting on the uniform or showing up to practice. He mustbe diligent, work hard, and endure difficulties. Just as the athlete gets the

award for winning the race, the faithful Christian receives a reward forrunning well. The difference is that the Christians reward is an eternalreward; it lasts forever (1 Corinthians 9:25have a student read).

In the days of the ancient Grecian games, the athlete who won the race wasrewarded with a crown. This crown was a wreath of greenery. It did not lastlong before withering and decomposing. The Christians crown is verydifferent. Just like the works represented by gold, silver, and precious stonesendured forever, the crown given as a reward to the Christian lasts for eternity.

These rewards are exciting, but they should not be the chief motivation forserving God with obedient actions and pure motives. The rewards are just the

nice after-effect of a life that was lived the right wayserving God becauseHe alone is worthy of our praise, our love, and our service.

Pauls instructions to the Corinthians did not stop with a glowing report of therewards they could get. He also warned of the results of a life wasted by worthlessworks.

    2. The believer will be deprived of rewards for worldly actions and selfishmotives (Read 1 Corinthians 3:15 again).

Paul made it clear that the Judgment Seat of Christ is a place of reward, not aplace of punishment. Unfaithful Christians do not lose their heavenly

citizenship. Although their building, composed of worthless works and vainmotives, was burned up, they at least built on the foundation that can never bedestroyed. So they will still have an eternity in Heaven. But since God createdpeople for good works that glorify Him, Christians will look back at themissed opportunities with regret. Worthless actions and selfish motives equalregrets.

On that day, there will be both rewards and loss of potential rewards. TheJudgment Seat of Christ will be surrounded by people who have earned somerewards. It wont be as if the believers will be divided into two groups: thefaithful Christians and the unfaithful. Rather, God will reward people for varyingdegrees of faithful service.

    Conclusion

Today we have seen that the Judgment Seat of Christ is a place intended forrewarding believers according to the good works they have done, if those works weredone for the purpose of glorifying God. Every Christian will appear before theJudgment Seat of Christ. He will judge our actions and our motives. Nothing can behidden from Him, and He never makes an incorrect judgment. No doubt, there will besome who earn few rewards. The question is: Will your rewards be few or many?

The challenge you are presented with today is to live in such a way that your life ischaracterized more by good works and honorable motives than worthless actions andselfish motives. The examination day is coming. Are you ready for the test?

No slo nuestras acciones sino tambin nuestros motivos!

Becausewe will one day stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ, we shouldstrive to be acceptable to God (2 Corinthians 5:9-10).
