Education:

PhD. in Mechanical Engineering (2002) Sponsor: Govt. of Singapore Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Specialization: Precision Engineering, Micromanufacturing, Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Courses: Advanced Metrology and Sensing Systems, Nanofabrication, Research Methodology, etc.

Thesis Title: Ion Beam Micromachining of Crystalline Solids Focused ion beam (FIB) shape was characterized and then mathematical models to predict the surface finish

from FIB parameters and material properties were derived. The resulting surface finish of FIB sputtered silicon wafer was studied. The calculated surface roughness was compared with the measured data. An application of the study to produce microcavity for mass production of microcomponents was made with sub-micrometer accuracy and nanometric levelled surface finish. Using the FIB sputtered microcavities, three-dimensional microcomponents e.g., microgears, gear-trains, etc. have been replicated from high density polyethylene by microinjection molding. The overall sizes of these replicated microcomponents were within few tens to few hundreds micrometers. This research works have been published in several international refereed journals.
