18 Parks and Recreation Quotes

to Inspire your Online

Marketing Strategy

Leslie Knope

“The thing about youth culture is, I

don’t understand it.”

In other words: Online marketing technologies, strategies and best practices develop at a lightning-quick rate - but we also have more access to free, educational content than we ever have. Do your homework and stay at the forefront.

“What I hear when I’m being yelled at is

people caring loudly at me.”

In other words: Qualitative data, like user feedback and reviews, can be hugely influential in guiding your business’ online marketing strategy. While it can be hard, responding to negative feedback well is essential for growth.

“One person’s ‘annoying’ is another

person’s ‘inspiring and heroic.’”

In other words: Not every prospective client is built the same. While it’s essential you write and create products for a target market, remember that not everyone is the same or will respond to the same stimulus. Vary your efforts and accept the occasional disappointment

Ron Swanson

“Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass

one thing.”

In other words: Ron’s absolutely correct. If you’re going to dive into a marketing strategy (like content creation or social media) it’s essential you do so wholeheartedly. Don’t attempt something for three weeks, decide it’s not working and give up. Put up a solid effort and measure your return before switching direction.

“Creativity is for people with glasses

who like to lie.”

In other words: Creativity, Ron, is for everyone, from bloggers to advertisers, email marketers to sales associates. Creativity is the reason our A/B tests work. It’s how we stand out from competitors on social and in email campaigns. Creativity is innovation, and innovation is success.

“Just give me all the bacon and eggs you

have. Wait...wait. I worry what you heard was

"Give me a lot of bacon and eggs. What I said was: give me all the bacon and eggs you

have. Do you understand?"

In other words: Ron asks for what he wants, and makes sure his needs are clear. You need to do the same thing. If you’re testing out a new third-party software provider, be sure they can meet your requirements before committing. It’s the same with social networks, blogging platforms, and advertisers.

“I believe luck is a concept invented by the weak to explain

their failures.”

In other words: Successful marketers got to where they are through hard work, measured steps and creative strategy, very rarely by serendipity. Emulate them, reach out to them, and do the same.

“There are only three ways to motivate

people: money, fear, and hunger.”

In other words: You should identify the pain points of your target market and respond accordingly. Your product or service’s selling points should be based around answering the concerns, worries and difficulties of your market. This frames advertising efforts, landing pages, email drip campaigns and more.

“When people get a little too chummy

with me I like to call them by the wrong name to let them know I don’t really care about them.”

In other words: With marketing automation and extensive CRM systems, it can be easy to think of your leads or clients as numbers. Don’t. Nothing destroys trust or creates animosity faster than a mistaken merge tag or accidental email sent to the wrong person. Put safeguards in place and go slow. It’s worth it.

Andy Dwyer

In other words: Don’t be like Andy. There are thousands of small steps which need to be taken before you can find real success online, and oftentimes success occurs in fits and starts. Keep pushing despite a slow start. Success is just around the corner.

“Oh I’m fine. It’s just that life is pointless, and nothing matters, and I’m always tired.”

In other words: Accept that you can’t control everything and you’ll be far ahead of your peers. Create a sales funnel and marketing strategy that bends (through triggered marketing automation, for instance) and weaves. It may be a mess, but it’s a mess with a single goal at the end.

“My whole life is a giant mess and I love

it.”

“I’m not crying, OK? I’m allergic to jerks.”

In other words: The marketing and startup world is one which will, there’s no doubt about it, kick you a few times on your way up. The way you respond to these setbacks will show if you’re actually cut out for it.

April Ludgate

“My gut is always right, okay?”

In other words: If something feels right, go with it (and test it). If something feels wrong, stop it (and test it). Your gut is a valuable tool, but so is a solid analytics and testing platform which allows you to prove your gut right.

“Time is money, money is power,

power is pizza, and pizza is knowledge,

let’s go!”

In other words: Time is money. Whenever you’re testing a hypothesis or determining if a strategy has a positive ROI, remember to calculate your time (generously) into the equation when you do so.

Also, April’s right, pizza is knowledge.

“I only tell the truth when it makes me

sound like I'm lying.”

In other words: Transparency in business is essential, both to generate leads and maintain clients. Yet there’s a difference between “transparency” and genuine transparency. Unsuccessful businesses will reveal only those parts of their business that cast them in a positive light. Successful businesses will bear it all and create genuine trust and loyalty.

Tom Haverford

In other words: Until 2014 popups were a thing for scammers, and now almost every business uses them to great effect. There are no high or low roads in marketing. There is simply what works and what doesn’t.

“I have never taken the high road. But I tell other people to ‘cause then there’s

more room for me on the low road.”

In other words: There are few better strategies than hard work in the right direction. There are few worse strategies than hard work wasted on a poor choice. Do your research, test your hypothesis, then dive in completely.

“Sometimes you gotta work a little, so

you can ball a lot.”

In other words: Testing, innovation, sleepless nights and constant change can be exhausting. Don’t be afraid to take a bit of time for yourself. More work will get done with a settled mind and unstressed working environment than with a candle burnt at both ends.

“Treat yo self.”
