NEWSTALKPiper Insuranceby

Working with My Father By Christy Kager

I have been in the insurance industry since I was 14. My dad, Larry Piper, put me to work at Piper Insurance filing policies. I worked off and on here through high school, college and grad school.

After grad school, I worked in Thailand and Washington DC, and returned to Piper Insurance in 2010. I started my new career here as a Commercial Lines Agent and I am now Director of Sales and Vice President. And who is my boss? My father.

My dad is a relatively easy-going guy, so transitioning back into the insurance world was seamless. He is a wonderful mentor and a terrific example of blending

salesmanship and kindness. Some might think that working with family would be challenging, and I won’t deny that, sure, there have been disagreements at times … but they are few and far between. I am beyond blessed and grateful to be working and growing a business that my dad built from the ground up through hard work, determination, and skill.

Being his daughter has its odd moments, though, as he accidentally calls me “honey” in business meetings or as my children run through this office -- a professional office! -- screaming “GRAMPY!” But learning from him has been rewarding personally and professionally.

It is wonderful partnering with my dad every day. I am very thankful that I get to spend so much time with someone I love and admire … and who accidentally calls me “honey” at least once a day.

I’m looking forward to a cousins-girl-trip to Phoenix this summer!

I was named after one of my mom’s childhood dolls.

I like using Facebook to keep up with my out-of-state family.

If you invite me to a barbecue this summer, I am bringing a pasta salad.

I have never broken a bone in my body.

My cat likes to hide behind the shower curtain and jump out at me.

My cats are named Brutus George and Tinkerbell.

My first job was working on a miniature horse farm.

The most beautiful place I have ever been is Montego Bay, Jamaica.

If I were stranded on a desert island and I could only have three things, I would want music, my phone and a few adult beverages!

I love working with everyone here! They have become great friends of mine.

13 Tips on How to Avoid Ticks this Summer

Insurance scores can have a big impact on the amount of premium you pay for your policies. 95% of auto insurance and 85% of home insurance companies use an Insurance Score as a major factor in the development of insurance rates (in states where the practice is allowed).

Your scores are typically 3-digit numbers calculated using information from your credit report. This is because historical data reveals that there is a correlation between a person’s credit rating and the number of insurance claims hefiles.

Why does my auto insurance score matter? In NY, insurance companies can use your insurance score to help set your price. Having a good driving record, few claims, and a good insurance score will help lower the rates on your insurance.

How do I get my auto insurance score? You can get your auto insurance score from TransUnion for free on Credit Karma. You can also get your credit scores and reports, plus tips and tools to help you take charge of your credit — all totally free!

Don’t walk in tall grass and leaf piles. “Hiking and camping aren’t the most common ways to catch a tick-borne disease,” said Kirby Stafford III, the state entomologist at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and the author of the “Tick Management Handbook.” “We estimate three-fourths of people pick up the ticks in activities … around the home,” with children’s play and gardening being some of the riskiest activities.

Mow your lawn!

Change the landscape. Use landscaping that deters mice, deer, woodchucks and other rodents that carry ticks. Remove tick habitats such as leaf piles, shrubs and groundcover near the house.

Use wood chips. Ticks won’t cross a barrier of wood chips placed around the yard’s perimeter. A 3-ft wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas can restrict tick migration into recreational areas.

Stay in the sun. Ticks can’t survive in areas with less than 80% humidity.

Move your play sets into the sun.

Wear light colored clothing so you can see the ticks as they hitch a ride.

Use a repellent that contains Permethrin, which instantly kills ticks, on skin and clothing.

Stay on trails when hiking. Stay in the middle of the path.

Wear long sleeves and long pants when you can.

Shower or bathe after spending time in wooded areas.

Check pets, clothing and equipment for crawling ticks.

Check bodies for ticks!! Be sure to check behind the ears, under arms, behind knees, in the belly button and in the groin area. Check children whenever they are exposed.

While most people are familiar with credit scores, a term that may not be so well known is one’s insurance score (also called insurance credit score). Your insurance score is a rating that is computed and used by insurerstodeterminethelikelihoodthatyouwillfileaninsuranceclaim.

Insurance Tip... When you make an inventory/list of your household belongings, it is best to put that list in a fire-proof safe or a bank’s safety deposit box. You might want to also include your insurance policy, copy of your mortgage, and important papers for family members.
