DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS: WarmgreetingstoyouallfromAddisAbaba!We’dliketoreportonouryear,andaskforyoursupport.

2016hasbeengame-changing.Ourmedicalworkrunsin3yearcycles;ourprojectexpiredinJune.WhileIsteppedout,theprojectwasreviewedandscrutinisedbytheEthiopianMinistryofHealth(MOH)andCharitiesCommission,andgivensuperbreviews.Asasignofsupport,theyrenewedit–foranunprecedented5years!

OuroutpatientworkhasbeenatYekatit12Hospital.TheMOHaskedustomovetoSt.Paul’sUniversityHospitalsystem.ThisisagreatopportunitytoexpandandtrainEthiopians.Laterthismonth,we’llmovetoAaBETHospital(AddisAbabaBurnEmergencyTraumaHospital).TheEthiopiangovernmenthasdeterminedthatourspinecentershouldbeheadquarteredthere.

Ethiopiaisundera“stateofemergency,”whichhasmadelifemoredif\icult.Medicalteamscancelledtrips.Butwefeelsafe,andlifegoeson.

Dr.TedfromTexas,Dr.SarahfromKansas,Dr.KamalfromChicagoandDr.BoachiefromGhanahaveeachcome,andwe’vedone54surgeriesinEthiopiathisyear.InGhanawehavedone31surgeries.Andatthiswriting,wehave5patientsinGhana.

Lastweek,Iwasinseclusionfor3days,scrutinisingtherecordsof180ofourmostchallengingpatients.Wechose22patientstogotoGhananextweek,withadditionalpatientstodepartin2017.

AndwhenI\lytoAmericatomorrownight,I’mbringingwithmetwin16yearoldboysnamedMarkosandTamratBogale,whowillhavespinesurgeryinDallasbyDr.TedBelanger.

Wehavegotten121newheartpatientssofarthisyear.WehavenothadtimeorfundstosendagrouptoIndiaforheartsurgerythisyear,buthopetodothatinearly2017.

Some of our successes: AliyahMohammedwascarriedintoourof\ice,theSaturdaybeforeEthiopianEaster,paralysed.Wedroppedeverything,closedtheof\iceandRickdrovehertoourCTcenterforanemergencyCTscan.ThisshowedthatshehadaZ-shapedspine,causedbyageneticcondition:neuro\ibromatosis.TheonlywaytotrytopossiblysaveherlifeandrestoreherwalkingwastosendherimmediatelytoGhana,fortractionandsurgery.

Lemma,our\inenurse,tookhertoGhanaandsettledherintoFOCOSHospital.Shehadseveralmonthsoftraction,followedbysurgery,doneintraction.Aliyahisnowwalking!

Mes.inTadesse:Lifefor19-year-oldMes\inTadessewasnoteasy.Hisbackbegandeformingasababy.Helost65%ofhislungfunction.Hisfather,apriestandfarmer,diedunexpectedly,leavinghimwithhismomandniece.Despiteallthis,hegraduated#1inhishighschoolclass,andwasadmittedtoAddisAbabaUniversity’scivilengineeringschool.

Unexpectedly,astrangeronanAddisAbabastreetpulledhimasideandtoldhimaboutaspinedoctorinAddisnamedDr.Rick.Mes\inwasshocked–thenotionofaspinedoctorwasanewconcept,aswasfreetreatment.The\irstthingMes\insawatourclinicwasanAmericandoctorhandingeggstopatientsoutside.Webeginclinicwith40hard-boiledeggs,tofeedsomeofourhungrypatients.WecalculatedMes\inhadaspinalangleof165°fromthefront,

and135°fromtheside.Hehadanadditional65°anglebetweenthe2sidesofhisback(thisisenormous!).WesenthimtoFOCOSHospitalinGhana,whereheunderwent3monthsoftraction,followedbyspinesurgerybyDr.Boachie,andmonthsofphysicaltherapy.

Aboutayearago,Fevenwaswalkingtoschoolwithhermotherwhenoneofourpatientshappenedtobeatthesameplaceatthesametime!Ourpatienttoldthemaboutthespineprogramandanopportunityforfreesurgery.Fevenandhermotherwereoverjoyed–doctorsatalocalhospitalhadtoldthefamilythatherdeformitywasincurablebymedicine,andthatanychanceofanoperationwouldcostthousandsofdollars.Feven’sfatherdiedwhenshewasathree,thenshemovedintohergrandparents’housewithhermother,whoworksinaprintshoptosupportthefamily.Fevenradiateshappiness,despiteconsistentteasingatschool.Shetoldusshe’sveryexcitedtoexperiencelifewithastraightback,andwe’rejustasexcitedtoseehernewfoundcon\idence.

LeulThomas,7We’vebeenfollowing7-year-oldLeulsincehewasaninfant.He’sanonlychild,hisfatherisataxidriverandmotherisahairdresser.Theytellusthatwhentheylookattheirson,alltheycanthinkaboutis\indingacureforhisspinaldeformity.Thesepastfewweekshavebeentheirhappiestsincehewasborn–LeulwillbeheadingtoGhanaforsurgerybeforetheNewYear!

SamuelKefato,14Samuelhasacongenitaldeformityrelatedtohisgeneticcondition–neuro\ibromatosis.HismotherandfatheraresubsistencefarmersinruralHosana,230kmfromAddis.Theyfeedtheirfamilyof10childrenwithwhattheygrow,andtheleftoverfoodistakentomarkettoearnasmallsumofmoney.

HisauntwasattendingmassataCatholicchurchinAddisandapproachedaMotherTeresa’sMissionnunabouthernephew,Samuel.Thenunlitupandsaid:“GotoDr.Rick’sof\ice,thisishisspecialty!”

Samuelwantstodedicatehislifetosavingothers,ashisisbeingsaved.Hesays,“IwanttobeadoctorlikeDr.RickwhenIgrowup".

Four nurses from AaBET spent a month at FOCOS Hospital in Ghana, learning intensive care techniques.

Academics: TheFoxStudyofsomeofthemostdif\icultspinepatientsintheworldcontinues.Abouthalfofthepatientsareours.Recently,16patientswenttoGhanaforextensiveevaluation,2yearsaftertheirsurgeries.

2papersonourworkinGhanahavebeenpublished,anddataonourtractionpatientspresentedattheSRSmeetinginPrague.

ThissummerRickgaveakeylectureatAbrahamVerghese’sStanfordconferencepromotingphysicalexamination.HehasbeeninvitedtobecomeafoundingmemberoftheSocietyforBedsideMedicineandinvitedtogivegrandroundsatStanford,Alabama,Kansas,andSanAntonio.

RickwasthecommencementspeakerattheUniversityofRochesterMedicalSchool.HewasawardedtheHutchisonAward,thehighestawardthattheuniversitygives,fordistinguishedpublicservice.
