werenotmembersoftheclubatthetime.
Thissecondpapercontainsdetailsofafurther52menwho

Informationaboutthefootballcareersandwarserviceofmen
whoplayedandfoughtahundredyearsagoisnoteasilyobtained

intheGreatWar.
47. James Anderson CMG DSO (2)JamesAndersonwasbornon29September1872.In1881,hewaseightyearsofageandliving
at25HerrietStreetinPollokshields.HisfatherRobertwasamasterhousepainter.In1911,the
familywaslocatedat7LeslieRoadinPollokshields.Jameswasemployedasapainter’smanaging
clerk.
JamesAndersondidnotmakeacompetitivefirstteamappearanceforQueen’sParkbutislikelyto
havebeenamemberofoneofQueen’sminorelevensinthe1890s.
JamesjoinedtheTerritorialForcein1895asaPrivateintheGlasgowHighlandersandmovedto
theHighlandLightInfantryin1898.HecontinuedintheHLIandheldtherankofMajorwhenhis
regimentwasatGallipoli.InSeptember1915,hewaspromotedtoLieutenantColonel.
JamesAndersonwasawardedtheDistinguishedServiceOrder(DSO)onnofewerthanthree
occasionsandwasmadeaCompanionoftheOrderofStMichaelandStGeorgeinthe1918New
Year’sHonoursList.
InJanuary1918,theGlasgowHeraldreportedthatJamesAndersonwasaresidentofMilliken
ParkinRenfrewshireandapartnerinthefirmofMessrsCTBowie,FisherandCo,paintersand
decorators,of26BothwellStreet,Glasgow.
48. Andrew BairdThenameAndrewBairdappearsontheQueen’sParkRollofHonour.RichardRobinsonsaysthat
hewasaLieutenantintheRoyalScots.TheForcesWarRecordswebsitelistsaLieutenantABaird
whowasaLieutenantintheRoyalScotsand“employedwithOCBn”.WasthistheQueen’sPark

Woolwichin1919thathehadbeenwoundedbutnofurtherdetailsareknown.
Afterthewar,ColinBuchanspentseason1919/20withDundeebeforemovingtoLinfieldinBelfast.
50. Hugh ButlerHughButlerwasborninGlasgowin1875.In1901,hewaslivinginOnslowDriveinDennistoun.He
was26yearsofageandanironmanufacturers’clerk.
HughwasaplayerwithQueen’sParkfromseason1896/97toseason1902/03.Hispositionwas
insideright.Hemade23appearancesforQueen’sincompetitivematches,scoringtwogoals,but
alsofeaturedinanumberof“friendly”gamespriortotheSpidersjoiningtheScottishLeague.
HughButlerenlistedintheScottishRiflesintheGreatWarbutlaterbecameaPrivateintheKing’s
OwnYorkshireLightInfantry.Itisnotclearwhatconnection,ifany,hehadwithYorkshire.
51. George CunninghamGeorgeBruceCunninghamwasbornat981DukeStreet,Glasgowon30January1892.Hewasthe
sonofajourneymanenginefitter.In1911,hewasa19-year-oldclerkinahideleatherfactoryand
residedat3KennyhillGardensinDennistoun.
GeorgewasaninsideforwardwhowasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerfromseason1912/13
toseason1914/15.HemadehisfirstteamdebutagainstPartickThistleon1December1913.He
playedafurtherfourgamesthatseasonandthenthefinaltwoleaguematchesofthefollowing
season.GeorgewasamemberoftheQueen’sPark1stX1tourpartytoDenmarkandSwedeninthe
summerof1914.
GeorgewasaLanceCorporalintheNorthumberlandFusiliersintheGreatWar.Whyheservedina
Northumberlandregimentisnotknown.
52. John DickJohnDickplayedwithQueen’sParkfromseason1904/05toseason1906/07.Hefeaturedmainly
atlefthalfbutsometimesatcentrehalf.Heplayedfairlyregularlyin1904/05and1905/06butonly

recordshowsthatRVKFinlayenlistedintheRNVRatGonvilleandCaiusCollege,Cambridgein
1902.
The1891and1901EnglishcensusreturnsrevealthatRichardVKFinlaywasborninScotland
around1883.Inboth1891and1901,hewaslivingwithhisfatherKirkmanandmotherJaneinthe
LondonsuburbofEaling.
AreRichardVFinlayandRichardVaryKirkmanFinlaythesameperson?Itseemslikelybut
confirmationisrequired.
56. Thomas ForsythThomasEForsythwasbornaround1892.In1911,hewasan18-year-oldlawstudentlivingat133
VictoriaPlaceinAirdrie.
ThomaswasaninsideforwardwhoplayedforAirdrieoniansinseason1910/11beforespending
mostofthenextthreeseasonswithQueen’sPark.Hemade41competitiveappearancesforthe
Spiders,scoringsevengoals.ThomasreturnedtoAirdrieinJanuary1914.
ThomasForsythwasaLieutenantintheRoyalFieldArtilleryintheGreatWar.
57. Andrew FyfeAndrewFyfe,knownasAndy,wasborninGlasgowaround1898.HeplayedforQueen’sPark’sfirst
elevenaftertheGreatWarbutmayhavefeaturedinthesecondelevenpreviously.
AndywasaBombardierinthe99thSiegeBatteryoftheRoyalGarrisonArtilleryinthewarandwas
MentionedinDespatches.
AndyFyfewasacentreforwardwhomadehisSpiders’debutatDumbartonon28February1920.
Heplayedin99competitivematchesforQueen’sPark,scoringaveryimpressive47goals.He
playedhisfinalgameon18October1924.
58. Robert GilmourRobertGilmour,describedontheQueen’sParkRollofHonourasHRGilmour,wasregisteredasa
Queen’sParkplayerfromseason1909/10to1912/13,withtheexceptionofashortspellatFalkirk
towardstheendof1911.Hewasaninsideforwardwhomadehiscompetitivedebuton30October
1909againstMortonandplayedhisfinalgameforthefirstelevenon25February1911.Inall,he
figuredin17competitivematchesandscoredtwogoals.
Robertwasa2ndLieutenantintheRoyalGarrisonArtilleryintheGreatWar.

59. Peter GrantPeterRonaldGrantwasborninSkelmorlieinAyrshireon25January1874.Hisparents,Johnand
Jane,wereoriginallyfromSpeyside.
Peter’sson,Ian,hasprovidedvaluableinformationabouthisfather.
PeterwaswithMotherwellandHamiltonfromseasons1897/98to1901/02beforejoiningQueen’s
Parkin1902/03.HewaswiththeSpidersuntilseason1907/08butmadeonlytwocompetitive
firstteamappearancesinthattime–againstHeartofMidlothianandHibernianinNovember
1902.Bothappearanceswereatfullback.Peterclearlyhadpaceas,on15June1907,hewonthe
hundredyardshandicapattheQueen’sParkSportsatHampdenPark.Thesilverteapotawarded
toPeterashisprizewillbeondisplayintheScottishFootballMuseumin2017aspartofour150th
anniversarycelebrations.
AttheoutbreakoftheGreatWarin1914,PeterGranttriedtoenlistinthearmedforcesbut,atforty
yearsofage,wasconsideredtooold.Hemadeseveralmoreattemptsbutwithoutsuccess.Then,
in1917,helearnedthattheFrenchArmy’sspecialambulanceservicewasbadlyinneedofdriver/
mechanics.Hepossessedthenecessaryskillsandofferedhisservices.Heservedatthefront
untiltheArmisticeandwastwiceawardedtheCroixdeGuerrefor“outstandingactsofbravery”.
Hismedals,clearlyvisibleontheportraitphotoofPeter,areondisplayintheScottishFootball
Museumuntil2018followingaloanagreementwithhisfamily.Thebackgroundtotheaction
photoofaFrenchvillageshowstheconditionsinwhichPeterandhisspecialambulanceunitwere
operating.
PeterreturnedfromhisserviceinFrancetomarryJanet‘Jenny’Wardhaughin1921.BythenPeter
was47yearsold.Theirson,Ian,wasbornin1925.Ianfarmedfromthe1950’sinUplawmoor
RenfrewshirebeforeretiringtoDundonald,Ayrshire.
Sadly,PeterGrantwasoneof35personswholosttheirlivesintheCastlecaryrailwaydisasteron
10December1937.
60. David Hamilton TDDavidHamiltonwasaLieutenantColonelintheRoyalArmyServiceCorpsintheGreatWar.Hewas
bornaround1872andin1911hewasa38-year-oldmanagerofanaeratedwatermanufacturer.His
addressatthetimewas89MillbraeRoadinLangside.Hewasstillatthataddressin1923.
ArmyrecordsstatethatthetheatreofwarinwhichDavidHamiltonfirstservedwasFranceon28
September1918.HewastherecipientoftheTerritorialDecoration,awardedforlongserviceinthe
TerritorialForce.
DavidHamilton’sfootballhistoryisunclear.AplayercalledDHamiltonappearedforQueen’sPark
in1893.WasthisDavidHamilton?
61. Richard HendrieTheQueen’sParkRollofHonourincludesthenameRichardHenry.RichardRobinsonrefersto
RichardHenry–aSignallerintheRoyalNavy.Itappearsthatbothhavegotthenamewrong.The
personconcernedwasRichardHendrie.
RichardHendriewasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerfromseason1916/17to1919/20,although
hehadshortspellswithHeartsandAirdrieinthatperiod.Hemadetwofirstteamappearancesat
centrehalffortheSpidersinApril1917.
TheForcesWarRecordswebsiteconfirmsthatRichardHendriewasaSignalmanintheRoyalNaval
VolunteerReserve.
62. George HigginsGeorgeHigginswasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerinseasons1905/06,1906/07and1907/08
butonlyfeaturedinthefirstteamin1905/06.Hemade23appearancesatcentrehalfandleftback.
GeorgeservedintheRoyalScotsFusiliersintheGreatWar.Whena2ndLieutenantin1915,he
sufferedabulletwoundtohisrighthand.Hewas35yearsofageatthetime.Recordsshowthat,in
1916,hewasaLieutenantintheSpecialReserveofOfficersinthe4thBattalionoftheRoyalScots
Fusiliers.
63. John HighetJohnJamesHighetwasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerinseasons1906/07and1907/08but
madeonlyonecompetitivefirstteamappearance.
JohnHighetwasbornaround1886.Atthetimeofthe1891census,hewasfouryearsofageand
livingatStairHouseinStairinAyrshire,thehomeofhisgrandmother.By1901,hewaslivingwith
hisfather,mother,brotherandsisteratthefamilyhomeat7NewarkDriveinPollokshields.
John’sfather,ThomasCHighet,wasaleadingQueen’sParkplayerofthe1870s.TomHighetwas
cappedfourtimesforScotlandandwasafirstteamregularfortheSpidersfrom1874to1880.
Hiscareerisdifficulttotrackbecause,attimes,hisnamewasshowninerrorasHerriotand,for
severalseasons,headoptedthealias“Spencer”.Hewasoneofseveralwell-knownQueen’sPark
playersofthetimewhochosetoplayunderassumednames.Everyoneknewexactlywhotheywere
sothereasonforthisisapuzzle.
JohnHighetwasa2ndLieutenantintheMachineGunCorpsintheGreatWar.
64. William KeithWilliamKeithwasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerfromseason1913/14toseason1915/16.He
playedintwomatchesinthefirsthalfofthe1914/15seasonandafurtherfourgamesinSeptember
1915.Allhisappearanceswereatinsideright.
WilliamwasaSergeantintheArgyllandSutherlandHighlandersintheGreatWar.
65. John KerrJohnBKerrwasregisteredwiththeSFAasaQueen’sParkplayerfromseason1910/11toseason
1911/12andagainfromseason1913/14toseason1915/16.Hespentseason1912/13with
Arthurlie.Johnplayedinthefirstteaminseason1914/15only,making17appearancesatfullback.
JohnKerrservedasaPrivateintheArmyServiceCorps(MotorTransport)intheGreatWar.
TherearerecordsofaJohnBKerrresidinginDennistounin1891,1901,and1911.In1911,hewas
a21-year-oldclerkinanironfoundry,livingat118InglebyDrive.WashetheQueen’sParkman?
66. Robert LambieRobertAlexanderLambiewasbornon28April1877inLangsideRoad.Hewastheyoungerbrother
ofJohnandWillieLambie,bothofwhomplayedforQueen’sParkandScotland.Indeed,Johnisthe
youngestplayerevertohavecaptainedtheScotlandside.
RobertwasafirstteamregularforQueen’sParkfrom1896to1899.Heplayedinavarietyof
positionsbutmainlyoutsideleft.Whilehecouldnotquitematchhisbrothers’footballingability,he
wasanableadministratorandgavevaluableserviceontheQueen’sParkCommittee.
Robertenlistedinthearmyin1915attheageof38.Hewasanunmarriedstockbrokers’clerkat
thetime,livingat30GlencairnDriveinPollokshields.HebecameaGunnerintheRoyalGarrison
Artillery.ROBERTLAMBIEinQP1stXI1898-99
67. George LeanGeorgeGilbertLeanwasregisteredasaQueen’sParkplayerinseason1914/15butdidnotmakea
firstteamappearance.Thismaywellhavebeenbecauseheenlistedintheforcesintheearlydays
oftheGreatWar.TheSouthernPressreportedthat,inaletterdated27November1914,asoldier
calledTommyThompson,servingwiththeRoyalEngineers,saidthathehadbeen“outatacertain
place”andaGlasgowsoldierhadtoldhimthatBobYoungofQueen’sParkwasinabilletalongthe
road.HehadcalledtoseehimandalsometGeorgeLean.
GeorgeLeanenlistedasaPrivateinthe9thBattalion(GlasgowHighlanders)oftheHighlandLight
Infantry.Hewaslatercommissionedasa2ndLieutenantinthe6thBattalionoftheHLIandroseto
therankofCaptain.
Georgewouldhavebeen20yearsofagewhenhejoinedtheHLI.Hewasbornon4November1895
at60GrangeRoadinLangside.Hisfather,Daniel,wasameasurer(measuringsurveyor?).
68. Thomas MillerThomasMillerwasregisteredwiththeSFAasaQueen’sParkplayerinseasons1913/14and
1914/15.HeplayedinthreecompetitivefirstteammatchesfortheSpiders–againstDundee
on18April1914,Motherwellon21November1914andDundeeon2January1915.Eachofhis
