The Headland Sculpture on the Gulf on Waiheke Island which isalso a great little walk in itself, is on again in 2015.There’s no doubt that it went very well, and in almost everyarea “exceeded their hopes and expectations” reports theorganisers. They enjoyed wonderful weather and a record 45,000 visitors, the vast majority of whom greatly enjoyed the wider experiencethey made available to them.In all, over 80 works have been sold to date, which is a majorachievement.Their primary focus was the sculpture exhibition itself.and theydid not want to change it in any fundamental way,The only significant change they made to the walk itself, wasreversing the direction. Again this met with a very positiveresponse, many of those who had visited previous events findingit easier, the views better, and the experience more satisfyingas a whole

We love them as a getaway and a time to explore, butaccording to a new study, a good holiday can contribute toyour overall health and happiness.Research conducted by Deutsche Gesellschaft fürTourismusforschung and unveiled at this year’sITB Berlin Convention, confirmed that peoplewho spend their money on trips, whether it befamily trips, short breaks of even a concert arehappier than those who acquire materialobjects such as jewellery and clothing.Researcher and work and organisationalpsychologist Dr. Jessica de Bloom said thestudy revealed the joy from purchasingmaterial objects could not compare to theexcitement and mental benefits experienced while on holiday.“One can compare a designer suit with an expensive watch, but not one’s diving holiday on the Red Sea and a colleague’scity break in Barcelona,”.“What is more, experiences do not wear out over time.”

Five tricks to help makewalking a lifelong habit

1. Schedule it. If you treat walking as an automatic "must" onyour daily list -- like brushing your teeth or taking your vitamins -- then there's no debate about whether you will or won't do it.Before long, it'll be a rock-solid habit.2. Get a buddy. Having a friend (human or dog) waiting for youto take a walk gets you out there day after day. Your walking"buddy" doesn't even have to be somebody you see. It canbe a pal with whom you check in every day, by phone or online. If your pal doesn't get your daily "I just walked" message, he orshe knows to give you a get-going poke.3. Add some fun. Dying to play Boggle on your smartphone?Head outdoors or hop on the treadmill, and think up wordswhile you walk. Addicted to recorded romance novels? Listento them only while you stride along (just don't run into anythingwhen it gets steamy!). Whatever makes walking more fun foryou, do it!4. Keep track. A walking log, a pedometer, even a little notationin your calendar - it's all good. That's because keeping track ofyour kilometres and goals increases your odds of sticking toyour plan.5. Reward yourself. We're all for bribery when it comes to exercise.Give yourself a walking goal of, say, 15 kilometres per week fora month, or 60 minutes a day for a week -- and if you'resuccessful, treat yourself to a massage or a gotta-see-it movieor a new MP3 player for your walking tunes or recorded books.

19 year old Brando Yelavich, a kiwi has decidedto set off on a solo adventure to fund raise forthe Ronald McDonald House Charity forchildren..He is walking around the whole of New Zealandand is living off of the land and the kindness offellow kiwis for his whole trip. He started inFebruary at Cape Reinga and has so far walkedall the way down the North Island's West Coast, crossed the Cook Strait kayaked all through the

Additionally, a holidaymakers’ health also benefits from thegetaway, with the trip allowing them to recover from the stressof their day-to-day lives. The study found people who do not go on holiday for longer

periods are at greater risk of becoming ill or evendying earlier than those who regularly go onbreaks. However, frequent breaks rather than extendedholidays are also crucial to maintaining goodhealth.Every type of holiday examined by the study, whether a short break or a three-week hikingtr ip, produced evidence of comparativebenefits to people’s health and wellbeing.

“One cannot postpone one’s sleep or relaxation requirements,”Dr Bloom added. “One long summer holiday cannot compensate for a wholeyear of hard work and overtime.”

Holidays – keeping you healthy and happy

Solo young adventurer tackles journey around NZMarlborough Sounds, and plans to continueon down the West of the South Island then allthe way back up the East Coast of NZ.Another reason why Brando is doing thisjourney is because he loves adventure andwants to complete this great feat whichnobody has yet achieved. He has lived withdyslexia and ADHD his whole life which resultedin him struggling in school and was turneddown by the NZ Army in 2012.

New Zealand Walks

On the western hills of Wellington’sHutt Valley there is a number ofinteresting hill walks of varing grades

with some suitable for all ages. One popular short one is from the

Oakleigh Street in the uphill suburb ofMaungaraki down to the Korokoro Dam andback.

Starting from the carpark off OakleighStreet the evenly graded track climbs a smallmound and from then on its all down hillthrough fern and over a number of bridges tothe Korokoro Dam. It is also used bymountain bikes.

While there walk down and take a look upat the water flowing down over the dam andgo back up and walk further on and take alook at the lake behind the dam.

On the retun trip to the start at OakleighStreet carpartk it is mostly up hill and can takea little longer.

Longer walkAnother way but longer to get to the dam

is starting from Cornish Street entranceThis evenly graded track follows an old steel

pipeline from the Cornish Street entranceupstream through mature and regeneratingbush to the Korokoro Dam.

The dam was the first gravity fed concretedam in New Zealand, built to supply waterfor the Petone Borough in 1903.

A feature of New Zealand’s early europeanhistory is the large number of severelydamaging fires that broke out from time totime in early New Zealand towns. These fireswould destroy whole blocks of woodenbuildings because they were built close

together. Early timber buildings in Petonesuffered this fate even though an artesian watersupply was available. Although the ratepayerswere initially reluctant to endorse the fundingof a dam, they were eventually persuaded todo so to get a water supply of sufficientpressure and volume.

The waters of the Korokoro Stream werealready in use by the Petone Woollen Millswhen the Petone Borough proposed to utilisethe stream for a water supply. The mill had aTotara timber dam on the lower reaches todrive a turbine at the mill.

Early Maori used this route to link thePorirua and Wellington harbours.

The Greenstone Caples Track is saferand more accessible to a wider rangeof people now a ten-year upgrade

project by the Department of Conservation(DOC) nears completion.

DOC Wakatipu WorksRanger Richard Struthers saidimprovements to the track wereaimed at attracting more familygroups and novice trampers.

The easy 3-4 day valley walk86 km from Queenstown isideal for people who don’t wantto tackle anything toostrenuous or who are new totramping.

As it also links to the Routeburn Track, oneof New Zealand’s Great Walks, the four hutsalong the Greenstone/Caples are often full tocapacity during peak periods (January-March),with the high numbers of trampers wantingaccommodation.

The McKellar and Greenstone huts haverecently been replaced and this winter, the 40-year-old 12-bunk Mid Caples Hut will bedemolished and replaced with a new 24-bunkhut.

Accommodation won’t be available at thissite for most of the winter months duringconstruction, but the Upper Caples hut willremain open, a 90-minute walk further alongthe Caples Track. Once the new Mid Capleshut is completed, the Upper Caples Hut willbe decommissioned.

The section of track between the upperGreenstone and the upper Caples valley hasbeen rebuilt over the past three summers, amajor project that has involved rerouting thetrack to create an easier walk over McKellarSaddle. This raises this section to the standardof the remainder of the track.

The upper Greenstone bridge has beenreplaced and several bridges installed in theCaples Valley over critical stream crossings. The carpark at the start of the track will beupgraded and enlarged soon.

Meanwhile, on the Routeburn Track, a day

shelter will be built at the Routeburn Flats Hutto accommodate the high number of daywalkers to the hut (it is only a two-hour walkfrom the Routeburn Roadend). Construction

is due to begin during the comingwinter.

Two bridges on the track havebeen upgraded this season and theRouteburn Flats suspension bridgeis currently being replaced. Thetrack will remain open during thiswork but there may be short delaysat the bridges.

participants will sail by yacht to Motuarohia and Moturua Islands.During my trip, I completed part of the Four Beach Foray bycircumnavigating Moturua Island.

At a local café, I met my guide for the day, Tim Grant, who wasaccompanied by his partner, Colette. You could describe Tim as amodern-day Davy Crocket — an ex DOC ranger, he sets traps for aliving and knows the region like no one else — and having lived in theBay for most of his life, he’s a great source of interesting facts aboutthe region.

Leaving Long BeachDuring the Walking Weekend, participants will sail to Moturua

Island by yacht. However, a yacht wasn’t available for us on this trip,so, instead, Tim organised a couple of his kayaks.

From town we took a five-minute drive to Tim and Colette’s houseat Long Beach where a couple of kayaks were waiting out the front —one single and one two-seater. As Colette and I were fairlyinexperienced, the two of us took the two-seater, with Tim taking thesingle.

Kayaking to Moturua IslandWith Colette controlling the rudder from the rear, we headed

towards Moturua Island. Synchronising our paddle strokes was a bittricky at first (if you’re not careful you can end up spinning in circles),but we soon got the hang of it and settled into a steady rhythm.

With just the sound of our paddles dipping into the water, it was aneat sensation — almost hypnotic. There was hardly a ripple in thewater and any thoughts of falling out and getting soaked were farfrom my mind.

It took us about 50 minutes to reach Moturua Island and by thenmy tired arms were telling me it was time to step on land.

Moturua IslandDuring the Walking Weekend, the Four Beach Foray will involve sailing

to Motuarohia Island and visiting a Maori pa site; sailing on to MoturuaIsland to walk its perimeter and then sailing back to the mainland. It isdescribed as medium difficulty and will take about seven hours. I found

conservation effort between the Departmentof Conservation, the Guardians of the Bayof Islands and the Ngati Kuta and Putukehatribes to restore the island to its natural state. It is home to native birds, like Kiwi, Tui, andthe vegetation consists largely of Manuka andKanuka, which act as “nursery” trees byproviding shelter to other species.

At one point, Tim pointed out a Tomtit (apretty black and white breasted bird) andexplained, “If they’re here then the forest mustbe in good shape.”

Remnants of the pastThere are 27 recorded archaeological sites

on Moturua Island, including Maori pa,gardening sites and pits. At Homestead Bay,we saw the remains of a homestead datingback to early last century, which was home toa Maori family who farmed on the island.

At Army Bay, we also saw the concreteremains of an army observation post, whichwas constructed during World War Two whena Japanese invasion was a real threat.

A highlight for me was the picturesque viewof Urupukapuka Island and MotukiekieIsland, which we enjoyed from a vantage pointabove Army Bay.

Kayaking back to Long BeachAfter we had walked around Moturua

Island, it was time to go home. To make thingsinteresting, we paddled to nearby Motuarohia, entering a lagoon from the seaward side, jumped out of our kayaks and dragged thema short distance to the other side beforecontinuing our journey.

By the time we reached Long Beach(another 50 minutes later), I was definitelyready to hang up my paddle. We kayaked about16 kilometres and my arms certainly felt it.

My trip to Moturua Island was just part ofthe Four Beach Foray. It was a lot of fun and Iparticularly enjoyed a cold beer at the Dukeof Marlborough that evening.

Do you get RLSHealth

While touring Australia, co-presenting a course for healthprofessionals about burnout in athletes, I have beenbothered at night by my worst run ever of Restless Legs.

The reason for the upsurge is obvious to me: Physical and mentalexhaustion, combined with poor circulation.

In addition to being on my feet most of the day in the front of ahighly knowledgeable audience (stress!), I am also spending a gooddeal of time hanging around airports and then sitting cramped upfor hours in aircraft (poor circulation), which means: Pooroxygenation of the legs and poor elimination of metabolic by-products which can lead to cramp.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is an uncontrollable urge to movethe legs, or creepy-crawly sensations in the legs that often leads tosleep deprivation. It is a most unpleasantsensation that can literally drive theafflicted person crazy - or the persontrying to sleep next to you while yousquirm and wriggle away. A light-hearteddescription of the ailment is the"Wiggles".

There is no denying that there aremany people who suffer from leg painand irritation while in bed; but this doesnot mean that the only therapy is to takea costly, powerful drug that come with a long list of nasty side effects.

The Wiggles is usually experienced at night, when in bed, andmost intense during the first few hours of turning in. It can affectboth the very unfit and the very fit equally but may be exacerbatedby fatigue.

Here's what I think is going on: During sleep the body's centralmetabolism slows. What this means is the heart slows, the bloodpressure drops, as does body temperature. The problem is that somemuscles may still be right smack in the middle of working hard toreplenish depleted nutrient stores and flush out metabolic toxinsfollowing a hard day. The muscles most likely to be afflicted arethose of the lower legs because they tend to be most stressed duringan exhausting day and, being furthest from the heart, are most likelyto suffer the most from anything related to a reduction in circulation.

Circulation in the limbs is also partially dependent on regularmuscle contraction which squeezes dirty blood back to the heart, lungs and liver. When the muscles are relaxed and still, blood flow isdependent on good blood pressure and a strong pulse which declineduring sleep.

This explains why the Wiggles is experienced mostly during bedrest and most often after an exhausting day.

To explain more about why it may be experienced more after atiring day, be it a walk in the bush or long day in front of an audience:If there is already poor circulation in the legs, such as comes withageing and/or if the person is exhausted from something like a longday on their feet, then there is a buildup of metabolic toxins and areduction of oxygen in the tissues. This may build to a critical level, causing micro cramping in the muscles of the lower legs and the feet

during the early hours of sleep. This is felt as a crawling sensation inthe legs and an uncontrollable urge to flex and extend the legs. This ismost unpleasant and sleep is completely disturbed.

That this unpleasant sensation is relieved by movement is a clue toits cause and to its relief.

Rather than resort to medication, try these first:Avoid a hot bath before bed and sleep in a cool room and cool bedIf you are hot and sweaty in bed, precious blood flow will be

diverted to the skin away from the muscles. You may find a coldshower before bed may be beneficial. The vasoconstriction in theskin will divert blood to the deep muscles.

If you get the Wiggles, get your legs dancing.Turn on your bedside radio and tune into some easy listening music.

In rhythm to the music while still lying flat, gently flex and extendyour ankles in time with the beat.

At the end of the 3-5 minute track, get out of bed and walk thelength of the house (just a minute or two), then get back into bed.

Repeat another track of music, paddling with the feet, then go foranother leisurely walk.

Then paddle another track of music while lyingin bed. By about this time, you should feel a relievingof the tightness and cramping in the legs. You mightwant to do another one or two slow tracks of musicwithout getting up and walking.....

Hopefully, you (and your very, very understandingpartner) will nod off during one of these tracks andyou will have a good night's sleep.

Why it worksRhythmic flexing of the legs activates the muscle

pump of the lower legs, by which the steady contracting and relaxingof of the calf muscles pumps the stagnant venous blood back to theheart, creating space in the legs and feet for their infusion with fresh, oxygenated arterial blood. Any discomfort should disappear entirelyas you rhythmically cycle through the music tracks and the backlog ofstagnant blood is finally flushed out.

This method gets to the heart of the cause - metabolic stress in thelegs.

Other valuable measures include: * Reviewing medication such as antidepressants, cholesterol and

blood pressure pills which may be direct or indirect causes of theWiggles.

* Ensuring that the diet is rich in nutrients and antioxidants whichassist circulation, muscle relaxation and protect against oxidative stress.

* Avoid tea, coffee, chocolate, red wine and spicy foods from lateafternoon to evening.

* Moderate your exercise and try to get off your feet towards theend of the day. It is better to exercise vigorously early in the day andrestrict evening exercise to activities like Yoga.

* Go for a walk in the cool of the evening and do some yoga-stylestretching before bed and try a cold shower.

I know, I know! The problem with these brilliant solutions, if youare like me, is once in bed total apathy takes over. Rather than doanything beneficial, you will just lie there and wiggle in agony anddrive your partner nuts! That's me to a "T"!

If you try this method for managing the Wiggles, please tell ushow you get on by writing a letter to the Editor.

Eucalypt trees planted to screen industrial buildings onthe boundary of the Estuary Reserve. Bridging a tidaldrain, the route takes you up an embankment that marksthe furthest extent of several land reclamationsundertaken by the Hawke’s Bay Harbour Board between1931 and 1989.

The Embankment was built to provide a route acrossthe estuary for the East Coast Main Trunk Railway. Thebridge was recently used by freight trains on the Napier-Gisborne trunk line, replaced a rickety wooden bridgethat connected West Quay to Meeanee.

Construction started on this project in 1914 with a“toe” of rocks laid down on each side of the tidal inlet.A steam-powered dredge scooped up shingle and clayfrom the estuary to build up the Embankment. Theconcrete bowstring girder bridge was built in 1917 andcompleted in 1922.

The road declined in importance once the PandoraRoad Bridge, east of the Embankment Bridge, openedin 1922. It closed to vehicle traffic in 1989.

The Embankment Bridge affords walkers good viewsof the estuary, including the main outfall channel to yourleft and the Westshore Wildlife Reserve, a significanthabitat for water-loving birds.

To return to the main street wewent past a Muslim castle, andwalked down about 1,100 castlesteps.

After spending the night intown, we travelled to Algeciras(Spain) and went by ferry toMorocco.

If you’re visiting Spain or

Gibraltar is very easy to walk aroundeastern side of the rock.

We passed several batteries, oldsearchlight posts, and gunemplacements, before seeing agroup of Barbary Apes. Somewere lounging on the rocks, someplaying with drink bottles or bitsof paper, while others werewatching and waiting to grab foodor drink from unsuspectingvisitors.

Morocco, Gibraltar makes aninteresting diversion.

One Saturday, first day ofbaiting for the season, agood turnout of volunteers

at the Ranger Station were hearingwhich lines were to be done, receivingreminders to place more marking tape, and how many bags to place. RegularArk members were standing awayfrom the crowd as they had beenbaiting for several years and knew thedrill.

Hearing first the characteristicwump, wump, wump, they casuallylooked south and saw a group of sixKeruru flying towards them and thenanother group and another. Excitedly, they interrupted the volunteers’briefing as nearly 40 Keruru cameacross and started wheeling todescend onto the slopes belowPukematekeo Track.

It was a spectacular sight as whitebellies flashed against forest greens.Settling, then rising, individuals andsmall groups made the air live.Buoyed by this display, they all headedoff for their tasks but over the nextweeks Keruru were seen in big numbers.

One estimate on one occasion was of nearly 50 birds. “Tirau” [=many Ti] supplies the answer. Those sites with lots of Ti Kouka, orcabbage tree, our most common native Cordyline species also knownthroughout the Pacific as Ti, provide abundant seasonal food.

Upside down more often than not, the Keruru gorge on the massesof Ti Kouka seeds, fattening themselves up in preparation for winter. In many parts of New Zealand, Keruru are rarely seen. Predated byrats or stoats or indeed illegally hunted, numbers have plunged.

Seeing as many as members and volunteers gives testament to theirpredator control yet historical accounts are of flocks of thousands —The Ark is not there yet but is surely progressing!

Unlike many other birds, Kereru have a crop that stores their foodprior to digestion. One of the most common injuries to Kereru iswhen their crop bursts when they fly into windows. The Kereru is

New Zealand’s only surviving nativepigeon. They are long-lived birds thatbreed very slowly. They are currentlyfighting for survival say Forest & Bird.

Kereru are important. Since theextinction of the Moa, they are nowthe only birds left that are capable ofswallowing fruit greater than 12 mmin diameter and dispersing the seedagain whole. This means that the futureof our native trees is closely linked tothe survival of our Kereru.

Recent studies have shown thatdespite the fact that kereru can livebetween 15 and 20 years, in some partsof the country, at present the averagelifespan is between one and a half andfive and a half years.

The biggest threats to Kereru areimpact injuries with windows and cars, closely followed by habitat loss, predation and illegal hunting.

What can you do to help? Thebiggest thing you can do is learn toappreciate what we have before it’sgone! Plant trees in your garden toencourage kereru to visit. Kereru haveadapted their diet over the years to eat

plants that are both native and exotic. For the opportunity to see whitehead in the Waitakere ranges, and

The Larapinta Trail, in the heart ofCentral Australia, is an extendedbushwalking track running west from

Alice Springs to Mount Sonder (Rwetyepme),along the backbone of the West MacDonnellRanges.

It was completed in 2002, and its 223kilometres are fast gaining a reputation foroffering one of the finest walking experiences

in the world. The steep red slopes of the

West MacDonnell Ranges risedramatically from the CentralAustralian desert. They typify

the rugged landscapes of theRed Centre with the changing

hues of their mountain peaks, rolling hills anddry river valleys made famous in the paintingsof Albert Namatjira.

The Larapinta Trail provides an unequalledopportunity to experience this living desertlandscape and take in its special wild andremote places. It crosses a variety of terrain, from high ridgelines to sheltered gorges andis home to many of the arid zone’s rare plants. It also links the well known visitor attractionsalong the ranges where walkers can join orleave the Trail.

Trek Larapinta is a small, local business thatspecialises in the Larapinta Trail. Establishedin 1998 Trek Larapinta has pioneered smallgroup trekking tours on the Larapinta Trail. They think small is beautiful. Being small, theycan focus on quality and sustainability. Beinglocal, they maintain strong knowledge of thelandscape and build deep connections with thecommunity.

They guide walking tours for small groupsand organise transfers for independentwalkers, support Indigenous enterprises andpractice environmentally responsible travel. They do this in the places they know and love:the Larapinta Trail and Central Australia. These are special places for them.

Just fifteen minutes drive fromQueenstown and nine minutes fromArrowtown is the beautiful Lake Hayeswhich is popular with walkers and cyclists.

The single track makes it possible to walka circuit of Lake Hayes that has been an eternalfavourite of locals and visitors.

The track is either well-graded, or a woodenwalkway, to create an easy stroll around thelake, famous for its stunning reflections.

Native birds to be seen along the wayinclude the Deep Blue Pukeko, also known asthe New Zealand Swamp Hen! There aresome inclines, but they're pretty short, andmostly the track's easy.

There are toilet facilities at the recreationand picnic area at the Arrowtown end of thelake, which is also a great spot to pause for adip in the lake. The path has some steep dropoffs at some points, so keep small childrenclose to you.

One can stroll, walk, run or cycle around alake surrounded by spectacular mountains;,

New Zealand Walk

where you may see some Australasian CrestedGrebe.

The track is probably best in early morningor later in the afternoon if you are a cyclist, because of it's popularity with walkers -particularly in the weekends.

Despite it's brown colour (due increasedalgae bloom in recent years) Lake Hayes isperfectly safe for swimming and is a verypopular swimming spot with locals during thesummer months when it is significantlywarmer than the other lakes in the region.

On calm days the Lake generates wonderfulreflections of the Remarkable Ranges and inautumn when the leaves are changing colourtheir is an extremely romantic feeling.

Getting thereLake Hayes is 14km from Queenstown or

5km from Arrowtown. As you drive from Frankton, you'll see a

carpark at the end of the Ladies Mile Road, asyou descend towards Lake Hayes, or continueto the pavilion where there' s lots of parking.

You can enter the circuit track at LakeHayes Pavilion and show grounds on SH 6;Bendemeer Bay; North Lake Hayes picnic area;Arrowtown Road and Rutherford Road (offSpeargrass Flat Road).

By Alex and Jenny Davies

On the north-western coast of Aotea(Great Barrier Island) a part of therugged coastline looks out towards

the high fortress cliffs of Rakitu Island.Years ago, a bridle track was cut, skirting

the cliffs as a land access to Okiwi and PortFitzroy. Attempts at farming the land resultedin the destruction of all the forest, mainly byfire.

In the 1940s, the route for a motor roadwas made over an inland saddle past the rockypinnacles, the remnants of the Great Barriervolcanoes. The old track was abandoned, andobscured by tall regenerating Kanuka until itwas cleared quite recently.

Today the reincarnated track forms a fivehour, reasonably level and easy walk along acontour between 40 and 100 metres above sealevel. Once you leave the well-providedcampsite at Harataonga Bay, the trail lies in

splendid isolation. Our friends left us at Harataonga, and

parked their vehicle by the road at the otherend of the track, meeting us for lunch on acliff top above Komahunga Bay. Here, wetook their keys and eventually met them backat Harataonga.

The scene at Harataonga Baymust have been very different in2007 when, for 12 weeks, 13“castaways” took part in a TVreality show. Rather than Britishtelevision crews with all their gear,we found just a couple of campervans.

A loop track has been madeto lead us up a steep route to a pasite overlooking the bay. Several huge oldPohutukawa extend their branches over themounds and trenches of the ancient fort andframe today’s peaceful scene.

Spared by the forest clearing, and by thepredation of possums that were never liberatedon the island, these trees are a special part ofall the Great Barrier coastline. We then linkback to the old benched track, working our

way over the long fingers of volcanic flowsthat protrude into the sea below us. Behindthe interspersed bays, we follow inland to crosssmall streams that flow down to the whitecurve of beaches. Some of the bays are privateland, but the owners leave it all in a wild state.

Between the bays, the track traversesprecipitous cliffs with expansiveviews.

Skirting around the hill aboveOmahungaiti Bay, we reach aviewpoint above the large sandy tidalestuary of Whangapoua Bay.

Beyond are the densely forestedhills to the north of the island. It’snot far now to the end of the track.Aotea boasts many fine walks; now

we are looking up at the volcanic formationsaround Hirakimata (Mt Hobson). Thespectacular Windy Canyon route to the summitpasses through here. It’s another example ofthe special walking opportunities offered onAotea.

Last April, the first Great Barrier WalkingFestival took place. It’s a perfect place for suchevents.Enjoy:

· Bush-walks in mature native forest,· Diverse bird-life,· Organic gardens and orchards,· Spacious architecturally designed home.· 3 dbl. bedrooms with separate bathroom and toilet.· Continental breakfast.

•Aotea is reached year round by ferry (4½ hours, or faster in the summer holidays) orlight plane (35 minutes) from Auckland.•There is a wide variety of accommodation, and rental cars are available.•The island is 30 km long. Cook named it Great Barrier as he sailed north in to the HaurakiGulf from the exposed Pacific coast.•Volcanic activity ceased here about 5 million years ago, but the hot springs in a naturalstream are a treat.•The whaling and Kauri timber industries have gone, leaving the island to a special breedwho like the isolation, and living independently of many modern conveniences.•Without possums and stoats, and cleared of goats, birdlife abounds. Kereru are commonand Kaka are heard often.

The 34th staging of the CadburyDunedin Marathon plus HalfMarathon Run and Walk will be held

on Sunday September 8th 2013 again organisedby the Caversham Harrier and Athletic Club.

The event was established in 1979 originallyorganised by the Dunedin Federation ofSports Medicine.

There have been many changes made tothe format of the marathon over the years alldesigned to make the event more accessibleand enjoyable for the ever increasing numbersof competitors.

The marathon organising committee of theCaversham Harrier and Athletic Club werehonoured to be presented with the 2012Innovation In Sport Award at the AnnualOtago Sports Awards for their work inmarketing and growing the marathon on takingover the organisation in 1985.

Last year marked the 25th year of majorevent sponsorship from Cadbury Ltd makingit one of the longest running corporatepartnerships of its type in New Zealand.

This year for the second time raceheadquarters will be based at the Forsyth BarrStadium in Anzac Avenue. The start of theHalf Marathon Run and Walk will be in theStadium Car Park with the newly designedcourse meaning competitors will be able totake in many of the city’s sights.

The further extension of the harboursidewalkway- cycleway will mean competitors willbe able to enjoy more time away from theconfines of State Highway 88. This will alsoprovide additional viewing for those travellingon the supporters train from Dunedin to PortChalmers.

The associated Children’s Challenge will beheld for the second time this year starting onLogan Park and finishing inside the ForsythBarr Stadium. Organised by marathoncommittee member and retired Dunedin

CadburyDunedinMarathonnow in its34 year

School Principal Dave McWhinnie the eventattracted more than 600 runners from yearthree to year eight. Children will completethe”marathon” distance in stages during theschool terms with the final 2.2 km run on theactual day. Supporters and Runners can watchon the big screens in the stadium’s competitorscross the finish line.
