These events will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, from 19-24 October 2015. Being the peak body in Australia & New Zealand representing clinicians, scientists and researchers in the broad area of Sleep, ASA prides itself in presenting the clinical updates, latest research, and evidence based science to workers in the field of Sleep Disorders and Sleep Health. The 3-day course is intended for dental professionals interested in the dental aspects of sleep disordered breathing and the clinical management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. The first day of Sleep DownUnder 2015 will contain sessions with Dental Sleep Medicine content. These will be of interest to experienced clinicians, as well as those who have attended the course. Dr Dennis Bailey, DDS, FAAOP, D-ABDSM

We are delighted that Dr Dennis Bailey has acceptedour invitation to contribute to this course and themain ASA/ASTA meeting. Dr. Bailey is a generaldentist with a practice limited to the management ofSleep Related Breathing Disorders (Snoring andSleep Apnoea) utilizing oral appliances as well asTemporomandibular Disorders, Orofacial Pain andrelated headaches.

He is a graduate of Indiana University School ofDentistry and completed a General PracticeResidency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.He is a past president of the American Academy of

Dental Sleep Medicine (1998-1999), is the founder andpast-chair of the OralAppliance Section andserved on the Standards ofPractice Committee for theAmerican Academy of SleepMedicine. He frequentlylectures both in the US andinternationally and hasauthored numerous articlesand chapters on the topic ofSleep Medicine and on the

use of Oral Appliances by the dentist for themanagement of snoring and sleep apnea.

In October of 2001, he co-edited the Dental Clinics ofNorth America entitled “Sleep Disorders: Dentistry’Role”. He is currently a visiting lecturer in theOrofacial Pain Program at UCLA School of Dentistryand is the Director of the Mini-Residency in SleepMedicine for the Dentist.

In December 2010 the textbook he and Dr. Attanasioauthored entitled “Dental Management of SleepDisorders” was released and is available from Wiley-Blackwell. In addition he was the guest editor for“Dentistry’s Role in Sleep Medicine”, March 2010edition, in the Sleep Medicine Clinics. In April of 2012a Dental Clinics of North America text was publishedthat Drs. Bailey and Attanasio co-edited entitled“Sleep Medicine for Dentistry”.

Dr. Bailey is currently the Past-President (2013-2014)of the Colorado Sleep Society and is the chair for theSleep Medicine Committee for the AmericanAcademy of Orofacial Pain. He has Diplomate statusin the American Board of Orofacial Pain and in theAmerican Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

The course emphasises the multidisciplinaryapproach to the treatment of sleep disorders withpresentations on wide-ranging andcomprehensive topics as listed below. Thepresenters are experienced multidisciplinarypractitioners and include sleep medicinephysicians, dentists, psychologists, ENT/OMFsurgeons, sleep scientists and dental specialists.

Attending clinicians will gain a broadening of theirknowledge of the dental treatment of patientswith obstructive sleep apnoea and snoringthrough the utilisation of oral appliances. Thelatest clinical protocols, and guidelines will bereviewed to help clinicians gain confidence inintegrating Dental Sleep Medicine into their dailypractice.

At the conclusion of the course attending dentistswill have an understanding of the clinical skillsrequired to work in the field of Dental SleepMedicine in consultation with qualified medicalpractitioners. This course is supported by theAustralasian Sleep Association whose membersare committed to providing further sleepeducation for the growing field of Dental SleepMedicine.

Participants will receive a certificate oncompletion of the course which will be recognisedas continuing professional development.
