Academic stress may be caused by parents, teachers, peers and even by the students’ own expectations or combinations of any of these four. Parents will normally push their children to have stellar performances in tests or examinations. Teachers’ high expectations in the classroom will also be a big contributor as they will constantly push you to boost your test scores and to do consistently well. Their peers can also drive the students to tremendous amounts of stress especially when they try to compete with each other negatively. In addition, their own drive to do well for their family and to be as successful as their parents or other family members, is a pressure that can be overbearing. Academic pressure can get the best of anybody if they do not know how to deal with them properly. Many stories from all over the world have been testament to the detrimental effects of academic pressures. Cases have been noted regarding anxiety, depression, suicides, academic dishonesty and even murder as some of the effects of not dealing with academic stress properly. Here are some ways to alleviate or help students to cope with academic stress: 1. Do not pack students’ timetable with loads of daily activities Many students are expected to do more than activities that they already have in school. Besides the normal after-school tutorials on 2 or more subjects, they are also expected to do music, dance, clubs and sports activities on top of a hectic school day. Students whose schedules are over-filled will soon realise that they are overwhelmed by this hurried lifestyle and will burn out easily. This may contribute to more anxiety-stricken and depressed youths. According to Denise Clark Pope, PhD, lecturer, Stanford University School of Education and author of the book Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students, "We would not be in the situation we are today. It would be that dramatic of a change." This is granted that parents allot more sleep, down time, and family time, Pope says. It may difficult but, as guardians or parents, we must model and teach them to balance school work and play. When they become more mature, they will be able to apply this skill to work and family. 2. Spend more quality time with your children The best stress-coping mechanism is to find ways to take yourself away from the cause of the stress. What better way to do this but to spend quality time with your children. Spending 20 minutes to an hour of undivided attention to your children though mealtime conversations, exercising with them or going out on a date and truly listening to them will definitely defuse all the pressure that they feeling in school, in the same manner that parents will also be able to forget their stress from work. Besides feeling invigorated because family bonds are strengthened, your children will also become happier when they are able to unload. 3. Teach students to manage their time properly In today’s current realities, two skills that help individuals survive this “fast” lifestyle are time-management and organizational skills. These are simple tips that may guide parents to teach students to budget time wisely and organize their schedules: Have students apportion time to study regularly. In this manner, they will avoid cramming later on. This is also true for homework. By doing little each day, stress will be reduce in terms of the amount of work to do and dealing with pressures of deadlines. Use of planners or organisers must be encouraged to keep track of assignments and other school works. Provide a conducive place for your children to study, away from distractions. During school days, establish a rule on watching TV, playing video games or gadgets. Have a form of a reward system to encourage them to accomplish their task for that day. However, be careful to ensure that they are working not for the reward but because they have to be responsible with their school work. 4. Send the right messages and redefine meaning of success for your children It is important to set high but achievable expectations. However, be wary not to make academic stress worse for your children when you drive them unreasonably to excel. Instead of stressing the value of grades, stress character building in achieving excellence.

Dealing With Academic Stress By Dexter H C Canicula

One of the most important skills that any individual should learn as they grow older is how to manage stress. In our fast-paced environment nowadays, our students are exposed to many stress-related activities and academic pressures is one of those that causes daily struggles for students.

Here are some ways to alleviate or help students to cope with academic stress:

1. Do not pack students’ timetable with loads of daily activities

Many students are expected to do more than activities that they already have in school.

It would be that dramatic of

a change." This is granted that parents allot more sleep, down time, and family time, Pope says.

It may difficult but, as guardians or parents, we must model and teach them to balance school work and play. When they become more mature, they will be able to apply this skill to work and family.

2. Spend more quality time with your children

The best stress-coping mechanism is to find ways to take yourself away from the cause of the stress.

3. Teach students to manage their time properly

In today’s current realities, two skills that help individuals survive this “fast” lifestyle are time-management and organizational skills. These are simple tips that may guide parents to teach students to budget time wisely and organize their schedules:

Have students apportion time to study regularly.

4. Send the right messages and redefine meaning of success for your children

It is important to set high but achievable expectations. However, be wary not to make academic stress worse for your children when you drive them unreasonably to excel. Instead of stressing the value of grades, stress character building in achieving excellence.

unhappy because of their low grades, the conversation should be geared towards understanding the circumstances of their low test scores and stress on what they have not done or what they can actually do to improve on their scores.

We should keep in mind that low scores are like difficulties in life. When they become mature later on, difficulties abound everywhere. Whenever they face failures, they should learn how to pick themselves up and learn from their mistakes. However, if they are not given a room for failures to take place, they will never know how to deal with them later in life. Try to keep in mind that a few, low test grades will not definitely ruin your children’s lifelong plans.

5. Have them experience more fun in childhood and teen years

Happy children and teenagers will definitely become more successful and more productive individuals. It will also mean that they will turn into happy parents and happy families.

Do not let school works consume all your children’s growing up years. Always provide them time to unwind or relax, or better yet spend more fun times with them. By having a balance between work and play, students will be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

Do not expose them to the idea that school works, like jobs, are meant to be just tasks that they must do for the sake of earning a livelihood. It must be inculcated with them the significance of education and the fun in learning for the sake of learning.
