Since the last SceneMuttley has...

.. Been to his dog-sitter whilst we were on holiday in August. Reported foodcrimes were:

Found his large bag of dog food and started eating it from the bottom up.Food came home in a different bag

3 sherbet dib-dabs - lolly, stick, sherbet, packets and all. Imagine allthat sherbet in his beard!

On the morning of his return, he ate4 packets of Dentastix provided byanother owner for their dog (for nondog owners, these are dental dogchews sold in packets of 3). He ateall 4 packets (12 chews) includingthe packaging, very quickly in onesitting before he could get caught. Not sure if it was the volume ofDentastix or the speed with which heate them, but result was a rathergaseous rear end, but very clean teeth….

St Nicholas Church repairs – updateThis bit always feels like there is an endless list of jobs to be done, but actually we shouldlook at it from the other end….there is an endless list of jobs that have BEEN done and thebuilding is still standing, looking beautiful and a peaceful place to be after 900 years. Thatis pretty incredible and we have many generations to thank as well as thanking Baydon’scommunity now. Thank you all.

We have just had a Quinquennial report (done every 5 years by an architect) and the roofrepairs have been successful which is wonderful too, thank you again to all who donatedtime and money to make this possible. A new list of repairs has appeared though so westill need your support.

It would be lovely if you would consider becoming a Steward of St Nicholas church andcommit to making a regular donation by standing order of perhaps £10 per month, but £5,£3 or £2 would really help too. And, if you are in a position to Gift aid it, your donationwould increase by 25%. If you would like to donate towards these repairs or set up astanding order, please get in touch: Rowan at [email protected] or the ChurchWardens: Margaret Hill 540789 and Mike Ball 540117 or any other church member youknow.

By the time you read this, every letterbox in thevillage should have played host to a cardintroducing our new “Community Contacts”.In times gone by, people knew everyone intheir street (or even in their whole village) and probably knew quite a lot abouttheir business too! Whether you think that was a good thing or not, it did meanthat newcomers were spotted and made to feel part of the community, and, ifanyone had a problem, people would know about it quite quickly. Times havechanged and it is much easier now for people to come and go, or to live withproblems, without anyone else noticing. In the spirit of “good neighbourliness” the church in the village has set up asystem to make sure that at the very least people are made to feel welcomewhen they first arrive, and that someone is aware if they need support. In manycases, this is simply formalising what already happens in a friendly village suchas this – but it also makes the important point that St Nicholas church exists toserve the community in whatever way it can.So each “Community Contact” will keep an eye on about a dozen houses in thearea where they live. They will welcome newcomers with a “Welcome Pack”,look out for anyone in need of help or support and act as a communicationchannel between church and village. In this way, we hope that the already strong links within the village will bereinforced, as the church tries to live out its task of caring for the world in God’sname. With loveSue RoddTeam Vicar

‘Angels’A Lifebuilder bible study with Douglas Connelly

In the unseen realms of the universe, powerful and wonderful beings move at the speedof light to carry out their Master’s will. They are involved in the complex political affairs ofthe nations and in the smallest concerns of children. They guard, protect, watch over –and engage in cosmic battles of which we are completely unaware. Yet angels are thesubject of much misinformation. This fascinating study guide helps us to discover thetruth as revealed by the bible. (Scripture Union)

The second pub being the Plough, a buildingwhich is now a house on Ermin Street.

Next door to the Plough was a Methodistchapel (now also a house). This was one of 2Methodist Chapels in Baydon. The other wason the Aldbourne Road and was built by theBarnes’ of Aldbourne (as in Barnes Coaches). This is also now a house.

There was a Blacksmiths in Baydon, now a house on Ermin Street called the Forge.

Cliff remembers before Ermin Close was built (built in the early 1960’s). Part of the landthat is now Ermin Close was once a Poultry farm. A large patch of land that is now partof Downsmead, once belonged to the Red Lion.

I asked Cliff about what he remembered being next to Choules Acre – now two houses– as I had heard there was a Church there, or certainly graves. He remembers it being a
