When it comes to reality television, viewers don’t seem to be short of options. We asked people on the street if they watch reality television shows and what their favourites were.

Sheryl Taylor, Richmond.

“I hate reality TV. But I must admit we do watch the music reality ones like X Factor and The Voice.”

Debbie Marshall, Richmond. “I don’t watch any reality TV. I don’t like it. There just seems to be better things to watch than other people’s lives just televised.”

Liz Malcolm, Richmond.

“No I don’t, I can’t be both-ered with it. I do watch TV but they just don’t appeal to me.”

Roy Vickerman, Richmond.

“I don’t watch television at all. I think it’s rubbish actually. It’s all confection and created and make up and smiles. It’s com-pletely false.”

“In a measure to protect these long-standing trademarks, as part of standard screening processes for bulk imports, New Zealand Customs are checking containers of import-ed goods to ensure they do not infringe existing Weet-Bix and Marmite trademarks, as of June 2012.“Since 1921 and 1929 respectively, Sanitarium has held the trademarks for Marmite and Weet-Bix in New Zealand and invested in the continued growth of these brands.”Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heerden told the Waimea Weekly in April that selling Weetabix in New Zealand breached a trademark held by the company. He added that Weet-Bix could not be sold in England for similar reasons. “We own the trademark in New Zealand and spend a lot of money in marketing those trademarks. So anyone else bringing in products of similar names or similar trademarks are infringing those under New Zea-land law.”Sanitarium ordered Weetabix off the shelves of the Eng-lish Corner Shop in Auckland’s Onehunga in 2010.

Ramp to be alteredTasman District Council will pull tens of thousands of dollars out of its roading budget to fix a prob-lem cycle ramp. The northern end of the new suspension bridge that connects Hope and Brightwater on the Great Taste Cycle Trail has come under fire from some cyclists that had crashed coming down it.The Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trails Trust erected a sign warning cy-clists that they must walk their bikes when coming down the steep gradient. But the council has gone one step further and will “soften” the gra-dient on both ends of the bridge by lengthening the two off ramps. The Brightwater end will also lose its 90 degree right angle in favour of a ramp that goes directly onto the river bank.TDC communications manager Chris Choat says the off ramps will be “a lot easier” for cyclists. How-ever, the message is still clear that everyone must walk their bikes up and down it. “We’re making it eas-ier but it’s still a bridge that needs to be walked onto,” he says. “It was a nationally accepted design that was built within a budget. It hasn’t worked here so we’re making mi-nor alterations for our users and their expectations.”The changes will be made before mid October by the same con-tractors that will construct a sus-pension bridge over the Waimea River, near the Appleby Bridge.

The principal of the region’s first Maori immer-sion school has likened the first weeks of term to dropping a child in the middle of Rome.Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi opened seven weeks ago and the hardest task to date has been building a word foundation in te reo Maori. Those challenges have affected parents and stu-dents of the kura (school). Some of the parents don’t even come into the school grounds because they are unable to speak the language. The task of learning and teaching in full immer-sion has been “very challenging,” according to principal Merita Waitoa-Paki, but she remains confident that the children can only improve. “It’s frustrating. I had kids go to me ‘what are you saying, what are you going on about?’ It’s like dropping a kid in the middle of Rome and it not being able to speak the language of that country,” says Merita. “But we were expecting this to be very challenging.”The principal’s office is the only room on site where people are allowed to speak English, but they are only allowed to speak it if it is absolutely

necessary – which has been a problem for par-ents. “There has to be a reason why they’re speak-ing English and we put that in place for visitors who obviously can’t speak Maori. We encourage our whanau to speak one word, two words and to use body language. The tamariki (children) need to see the parents are role modelling it.”Students took part in an hour presentation on what they had learnt since the school opened, last week. This highlighted the progress some students had made in te reo. “That was the first show that parents and these children have been part of that has all been in reo. There was no English at all. Within the seven weeks there has definitely been development in individual tamariki.”Staff have had to be “really creative” in the way they teach at the school to ensure children can understand what they are learning, whilst also picking up what is to become their number one language. The kura is situated between the Richmond Church of Christ and Salisbury School. It was built for $4 million at the Ministry of Education’s expense.

Bus campaign a successNelson Police have labelled a cam-paign targeting speeding past school buses as a success, despite road user’s “lack of knowledge to begin with”.Last week a police speed gun showed an alarming statistic that just two per cent of drivers during an hour on Main Rd Stoke actually slowed down to the 20 km/h speed limit when overtaking a parked school bus.Constable Carol Heiford says people are “definitely more aware” of the law as a result of last week’s cam-paign. “If it’s not in your every day world then you do forget about it.

Rural drivers are more aware of it and certainly people with children are more aware of it,” she says. Eight days later on the same location of Main Rd Stoke, 375 out of 450 drivers exceeded 20 km/h.The 20 km/h speed is only required for school buses (there needs to be a sign on the back of the bus say-ing “school bus”) and only when the bus is completely stopped. Drivers can pass at normal speed if the bus is slowing down to stop but hasn’t stopped. The speed of 20 km/h is for vehicles travelling in both directions.

Nelson City Council will today discuss the pos-sibility of hosting at least one cricket world cup match in 2015.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council could be keen to see some ICC Cricket World Cup games played at Saxton Oval after the successful hosting of three Rugby World Cup games in the city last year. The council will discuss the matter this today in a public-excluded meeting. “We have the resources and the knowledge after last year’s Rugby World Cup so it would be great to put those to good use. We have made no de-cisions yet, but what a great spot we are in to maximise what we learnt off the Rugby World Cup,” says Aldo.Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says TDC would have to sit down at discuss a potential bid at length before making a decision to support it. He says there would be some re-gional benefit but TDC has not historically in-cluded a major events budget.Bid deadlines are early next year for the tourna-ment which will take place in New Zealand and Australia from October to December, 2015. After today’s meeting the Nelson City Council will decide whether to proceed with an applica-tion or drop it altogether.

Ranzau students enter ad awardsA group of media students at Ranzau School have entered into the Fair Go Ad Awards, hoping they can get themselves and the school on the small screen. The theme that the students had to sell in their advert was colour.Teacher Megan Adamson says the group decided to utilise the school colour of yel-low, which also symbolises sunny Nelson. “We started brain storming ideas about what yellow means and what it represents,” says Megan. “But we don’t want to give too much away.”It is the first time Ranzau School has en-tered in the annual competition, which co-

incides with the television’s shows special program highlighting the best and worst television advertisements of the past 12 months.Hampden St in Nelson has won this partic-ular section before and Megan was aware of other local schools that had done well. The students involved in the project have a background in multi media. They have filmed Ranzau School’s “term news” which highlights what the Hope school has been doing during the course of each term. The finalists for the Fair Go Ad Awards will be screened on TV, before it goes to a public vote.

Forget Hollywood, Bollywood or even Wellywood, last night was all about Nellywood. The red carpet was rolled out at the Theatre Royal yesterday for the world premiere of the movie Kiwi Flyer, a family movie shot in Nelson and featuring a host of Nelsonians and the city’s famous Colling-wood St Trolley Derby.Stars Dai Henwood, Vince Martin and Tandi Wright gathered with director Tony Simpson and Nelson ac-tors Brittany Dick, Myer van Gosliga, Matt French and David de Thierry for the premiere. Another Nel-son actor Doug Colling is in London so wasn’t at the showing. The event had a distinctly Nelson theme with the Nelson Pipe Band playing on the balcony and the stars arriving in cars from the World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. The film is about a boy’s journey to compete in the Collingwood St Trolley Derby. He must overcome a loan shark, a nasty rival and a mum who doesn’t share his vision of trolley derby glory. The red carpet event was held at 6:30pm last night before the premiere at 7.30pm.

Tony, a former Nelson man who wrote the script and directed the film, says he has been overwhelmed with the support Nelson has shown the movie. “Everyone just totally understood what I was trying to do, embraced it and made it so easy to do things. Even in the film Nelson is almost one of the charac-ters in the movie. Everywhere we turned the camera it just looked fantastic.”Tony says he is currently signing a deal with a North American company to distribute the film in North America and the rest of the world and he is excited about tonight’s premiere.“I’m nervous and excited, this is the home crowd and I know that they will probably be fairly biased but I’m just so thrilled to be able to share it with them because it’s really not just my movie but their movie as well.”President of the Nelson club Tim Bayley says he was excited to see the movie on the big screen and was extra excited after the announcement Monday night that Nelson is set to host the New Zealand Trolley Grand Prix and has declared itself as the Trolley Der-by Capital of New Zealand. To view photos of the red carpet event, visit www.waimeaweekly.co.nz.

A cheque of $1000 could be heading the way of one talented Nelson teenager.Entries close on September 29 for McGlashen Phar-macy’s annual Young Achiever Scholarship.Applicants must be 16 years old or under (as of Sep-tember 30 2012), live within the Nelson-Tasman region and show a promising future in their chosen field based on previous results. The scholarship has been held annually since the pharmacy opened its doors on Queen St for the past three years. Previous winners include sailor Phillippa Wood, cyclist Tom Nicholson and Abbey Phillips of SFRQ national winners The Peasants.

Pharmacy owner Andrew McGlashen says the schol-arship is open to all fields, including sports, arts and drama. The age restriction was put in place because persons above the age of 16 are able to find employ-ment and work for money. “It’s hard to get from any-where. I wanted to put all of the money towards one scholarship to make it really worth while and help someone achieve exactly what they want to achieve,” says Andrew. “The past winners have been really grateful for it and it has helped them out.”Entries forms can be picked up from your local school or at McGlashen Pharmacy.Once entered, applicants will have to wait four weeks before the winner is drawn in November. It is possi-ble that the process will include an interview.

It made its way to New Zealand via a friend of the founder, Brenda Lowen, who works at Medlab South at Nelson Hospital. She was able to convince three of her work-mates to take part, and along with other friends in Wellington and Auckland. The fourth Nelson participant is a barman at Bar Berlin.

Call Guido Biggelaartoday for Cars, encyclopaedias, pneumatics, plywood,

software, vodafone mobile, credit control, tele-phone systems. These are just some of the prod-ucts Guido Biggelaar has sold over a 25-year career, but he feels working with Ray White Real Estate in Richmond takes the cake. Guido finds working in this profession truly excel-lent for two reasons.1. People. Working with peo-ple all day long at a level that matters to them, a level that has them engaged and asser-tive.2. Value. Working with real and absolute value. There is no denying that people are very focused and real when dealing with hundreds of thousands of dollars – the result of many years worth of hard work.Real estate is not an easy career. Many people try but few succeed at becoming successful real estate salespeople. There are many things in to-day’s environment that are required to ‘make it’ in real estate. A knowledgeable background in business helps as much as a helpful environ-ment, processes, systems and support. Selling a house is easy, selling a home - that’s different. Most of us live in a home.At Ray White, Guido has found the best team of

people he has ever worked with - they truly are fantastic. All of his colleagues, though individ-ual, are helpful, friendly, honest, courteous and

hard working. They have a lot of laughs, they work to make deals happen, they give and get from each other, that is what must hap-pen in this highly legal and ethi-cally sound industry. Guido likes the team environment so much he has joined forces with Ben Cooper from the office and now they are twice as strong when as-sisting clients.”Born and bred in NZ, Guido comes from a large family in Auckland. Hailing from Orewa, just north of Auckland, he moved to Nelson some years ago with his

own family. A return to the North is out of the question because Nelson is just far too good a place to live. It hasn’t been easy at times but he has fantastic children, an excellent group of friends, outdoors to love and weather to die for (mostly). When asked why does he sell real estate, it’s because he loves it. The bottom line is, this is a good profession but it does take significant per-sonal investment. Guido says he doesn’t really go to work; he goes to work with good people to help them achieve a very important goal.

Talented teen needs supportA musical theatre student from Ga-rin College is gunning for one of the remaining New Zealand’s Got Talent wild card spots but he needs your sup-port to get him there.Jake Robinson, 15, auditioned for the show earlier this year but believes he did not perform the right songs that the judges were looking for. Jake says his musical theatre back-ground gives him a different dimen-sion. “People want to see something different and I’m different to a lot of other singers,” he says. The teen has been performing since 2003 in numerous local musical thea-tre productions. Jake says reaching the finals of New

Zealand’s Got Talent would be “amaz-ing”. Jake wants to one day perform on Broadway, West End or record an al-bum.“Any opportunity like that would be great. It’s something I’ve always want-ed to do.”Wild card on stage auditions will be given to the top five voted entrants. Jake is currently 24th with 300 votes. The public can vote online by visiting www.abovetherest.tvnz.co.nz, follow-ing the view auditions link and search-ing for Jake Robinson. Votes also count for the Nelson/Richmond area.To check out Jake’s work, visit www.youtube.com/user/JakeRobinson0064.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: After paying off my Mum’s funeral I don’t want my kids to have to pay for mine. What is the best way to save for this?

A: If you can pay ahead for your own funeral, it will ease the financial burden on your family when you die.

Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries

We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Know the cost of a funeral Decide how much you can afford to pay Investigate all options-including natural

burials which can save you a lot of money Start a saving account in your bank or with

a funeral director of your choice Investigate funeral insurance options Talk with you family about your plans, and

what you and they want

I would suggest:

It is important to have funds available to your next of kin as soon as you die so that funeral expenses can be paid. If you have savings for a funeral, then make sure they can access these. Your estate may take a while to be wound-up so your money may be unavailable for some time.

Measuring the diameter of blood drops isn’t your usual after school activity, but if you’re an entrant in the Caw-thron Science Fair, anything goes. The fair allows local science students to examine a ques-tion or problem that interests them and put to the test their own theories. The projects can be quite complex, and after conducting their own research the students ultimately come to a con-clusion on the matter.Four Waimea College year 13 students have entered in the popular science fair taking place today, and their projects have been inspired from a CSI episode, to real life situa-tions.Courtney Russ found her project “Absorb me maybe” at her church, where panels at the back of the room were installed to absorb sound for live performances.“I wondered whether high pitched or low pitched sound

was better absorbed through sound absorption panels.”While the students will get a few extra credits for their projects, they are equally passionate about science. James says the toughest part of the science fair was decid-ing on what topic to do it on, as it took him two months

before even beginning his project to settle on his subject. The students all agreed that while coming up against is-sues in the research and experiment process was frustrat-ing, the end product is rewarding. “When you finish it you feel really good, the hard work pays off.”The science fair is a famous Nelson event that attracts over 60 entries and is strongly supported by our local schools.Paul Nistor, who is head of the science department at Waimea College, says the science fair is a great opportu-nity for the students to meet like minded people. “It’s an awesome chance for the students to meet others interested in science, and open those networks up for uni-versity next year.”Fifty judges will examine the students’ projects, and win-ners can take a share of the major prizes that are up for grabs. The science fair begins today with the judging of projects and will be open to view for the public Thursday through Saturday at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village.

Benjamin Franklin former US President said ‘there are two certainties in life: death and taxes.’ To that I would add ‘being a hospital patient.’ Illnesses and accidents are well known visitors to us all; sometimes they are serious enough to put us into a hospital bed for a period of time. Unless one is in dire straits you don’t usually queue to buy tickets to book into a hospital, not even to avoid the mother-in-law or that long list of jobs that need doing at home. Hospital can be quite inhospitable places: ‘houses of pain’ or a ‘heart-break hotels’, anxiety, fear, uncertain-ty, confusion, loneliness, boredom, anger, disappointment, conflict, ex-treme pain, loss and death may be experienced. However anyone who has been in a hospital bed in Nelson also knows that the quality of the care one re-ceives as a patient or loved one is hard to fault. We are so fortunate to have such dedicated and highly skilled medical and allied staff serving our needs when hospitalised. Among valued allied staff at Nelson Hospital is the chap-laincy team, consisting of one full-time and two part time chaplains, and a team of locum chap-lains and voluntary chaplaincy assistants. The chaplains are ordained ministers of religion and the locums and assistants are all members of lo-

cal churches who have been specially trained to assist in the provision of chaplaincy on site or on call 24/7. Their task is to be a friendly and supportive pres-ence to patients and their visitors, as well as to hospital staff: to be a listening ear, and a source of help and encouragement to all people, and, if requested, to provide spiritual ministry e.g. prayer, anointing, Holy Communion, worship services. The provision of a chaplaincy service

is now mandatory in NZ public hos-pitals. Government and the medical profession acknowledge the value of spiritual care within the realm of ho-listic healing. The Ministry of Health funds 50 per cent of the cost of the hospital chap-laincy service throughout NZ public hospitals. The other per cent has to be raised by local churches and the gen-eral public. This week is NZ Hospital Chaplaincy Awareness Week. Part of that awareness raising includes an opportunity for people to contrib-ute financially to ensuring that the

chaplaincy team at all hospitals, including Nel-son Hospital, can continue to provide the cur-rent level of care and support to patients, and their loved ones, as well as to staff. If you wish to make a donation phone 544 8394 for a hospital chaplaincy appeal envelope.

St Paul’s Catholic School student Lydia Dunne’s theory that cell phones alter your head shape has won her an inter-school speech competition, held at the Richmond Church of Christ on Wednes-day night.Eighteen students were selected from 13 different schools to compete at the com-petition, which is run in conjunction with the Richmond Lions and Power Talk Waimea Clubs. The Richmond Lions sponsor the priz-es and certificates and the Power Talk Waimea Club organises the competition.Lydia, who won the Year 7 category, en-tertained the audience with a look at the change in head shape if people kept the cell phone up to their ear for longer pe-riods.Broadgreen Intermediate School student Fynn Sawyer’s speech offered insight into the over-whelming popularity of social media. He capped his speech off with the suggestion of a new form of media called YouTwitFace – combining You-Tube, Twitter and Facebook into one. His speech

created plenty of laughter amongst the audience as he won the Year 8 title.A Year 6 competition was held on Monday night with Wakefield School student Amy-Rose Berthelson’s speech on the mobility scooter tak-ing top honours. Judges say she entertained her audience with a humorous look at the “cool mo-bility scooter” and its fashion accessories.

If you’re wondering what the fish are doing at present, no one really knows because they haven’t been able to get out. What we can tell you is that fishing up at Stephens for kingies has slowed down consider-ably. There are some big gurnard around Delaware Bay and a few schools of kahawai have been seen in the harbour. Snapper should turn up in a few weeks if they follow last year’s pattern. Other than that we haven’t heard of too many fish be-ing caught in recent weeks. The past 10 Sundays or so have all been wet, with enough water on the lawn to launch your boat in.Everyone is well and truly over it and looking at the fore-cast for the com-ing week it looks pretty good right up to Sunday. You wouldn’t bet your house on it not changing but it’s definitely good enough to start pre-paring the boat for an outing. So this week would be a timely op-portunity to check the boat over before that first journey to the boat ramp. Every year someone gets caught out on that first trip with a problem or mishap that could have been easily prevented by some basic checks at home. If you haven’t had the motor serviced yet, then now is the time to book it in with your local dealer for peace of mind boating. If you own a boat you will always have

yearly preventative maintenance to do, and even though it is not always cheap, it is foolish to put off and will cost you more in the long run if overlooked.Don’t forget your checks on rods, reels, nets, knives, gaffs, tackle and your trusty old scallop dredge. Check all the guides on the rods are intact and that any ceramic guides haven’t cracked. Check the nylon on your reel. If it’s more than a few seasons old replace it and if its near

new pull off a good 10-15m as this is often stretched and nicked. Make sure the drags and free spool are all ok and spray with CRC tackle guard. Re-stock the tackle box as necessary and sharpen your knives as required. Now that you’ve completed all your checks, you can hit the water with con-fidence that your

boat is completely ready to go and all that you need to do now is join the club to find out where the fish are. We put out reports to our mem-bers via email of where the fish are biting, which gear and tackle is working and what bait is the flavour of the week. Call now and be first on the scene rather than finding out the fish have moved and you missed out because you weren’t a member.Email us at [email protected] for more information about the club.

indulge yourself with a nice vase, or this seasons handbag. Why not take a drive out to Wakefield Villa Tearooms and experience what we have to offer. Book early to save disappointment, phone 541 9168.

The Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association held its annual awards for the 2011-2012 racing season to a large appreciative crowd at Club Waimea.Members and race enthusi-asts enjoyed the light hearted banter presented by outgo-ing President Sean Harnetty which included some tradi-tional ‘blooper’ awards for unsuspecting members, fol-lowed by a very interesting and entertaining speech from guest speaker Dexter Dunn. The racing season for local owners, trainers and breed-ers was very successful with many awards being presented to our members. An award went to Russell Ait-kenhead, as ‘Unsung Hero’and trainers Murray Pash and Graeme Hall were presented with awards for The Awards for ‘Top Qualifiers’. The award for ‘Most Successful Horse Owned by a Nelson OTB Member trained outside the Nel-

son district’ was presented to part owner Alan Hahn and the award for ‘Nelson OTB member

who has a ‘Share in a horse/s trained outside the Nelson District’ went to Eric Inwood .Robbie and Sue Stuart had a clean sweep, taking out ‘Best Run at Richmond Park’, ‘Owner of the Year’, ‘Horse of the Year’ and ‘Trainer of the Year’ with their mare Jass. The evening was concluded with a huge thank you and ap-preciation to our volunteers and sponsors with a special mention to: Waimea Print, Nevele R Stud, BNZ, Club Waimea, Waimea Estates and Mountain Jade Hokitika who supported the club again for another successful season. New President, Sue Thomas

closed the evening by commending the efforts of all our trainers and thanked Sean for his out-standing contribution to the association during the many years he stood as President of the OTB.

Club Waimea Indoor BowlsOur Indoor Bowling season is quickly coming to an end and we will celebrate our success at an end of season din-ner and trophies presentation at Club Waimea on Sunday 30 September. This has been another busy season for the Indoor Bowlers with good player attendance at our regular club nights on a Monday evening in the Club Waimea Hall. Our season commenced early in Feb-ruary with a full program of social, club and interclub tournaments scheduled throughout the year. It is pleasing to see that once again Club Waimea have had a good number of players selected to play for the Nel-son Indoor Bowling Association. Not only are they in representative matches against other area Indoor Bowling As-sociations within the South Island but

also against the touring North Island Indoor Bowls Representative Team. The highlight of the season for our Club was the hosting of the Clubs NZ South Island Indoor Bowling Champi-onships over the Easter weekend. This tournament was a great success and some excellent Indoor Bowls were played, with Club Waimea Indoor Bowlers featuring successfully in some events. Club Waimea players saved their best effort for the Triples and Fours events, winning the Triples Championship Trophy with a team lead by Jean Mc-Kenzie with Lewis Della Bosca, and Kevin McKenzie.Jean McKenzie then lead a team to win the Fours Championship Trophy, which included Lewis Della Bosca , Kevin McKenzie and Nathan Della Bosca .

These wins were followed up by the Club Waimea Ladies Triples team Rhonda Bellis, Pat Carrick and Daphne Paki winning the Clubs NZ Women’s National Championship played at Pukekohe in July. This is the second year in a row that Club Waimea has won this tourna-ment, a fine achievement by our Ladies.Indoor Bowls is a game for everyone that can be played either socially or as competitively as you want. It is a cheap sport to play with no spe-cial equipment or clothing required other than flat soled shoes. Our 2013 Season will be starting mid February and instruction and coaching is available for new members. If you would like more information on the Indoor Bowling Section at Club Waimea then please contact Athol Cur-tis on 544 8046

Successful Season Draws To A Close

Waimea Squash Club The weather has been terrible through-out winter, and it’s not over yet. Fortu-nately squash is a great game to play at any time of year, regardless of how hard the rain’s coming down outside. It’s the ultimate indoor sport for fitness and en-joyment. Waimea Squash Club is situated towards the back of the Club Waimea complex. The club boasts 4 modern glass back courts and has the largest squash mem-bership in the Tasman/Nelson region. The club caters for all membership types from junior, social, family, and senior. The Waimea Squash Club has a proud history and has produced NZ champi-ons. The club caters for all players no mat-ter the skill level, for both social and competitive players there are regular activities during the year including so-cial leagues, club nights, tournaments, and interclub. There’s also a national grading system that means no matter what a players level they can participate in any type of competitive play. The club has a healthy junior pro-gramme, with regular coaching and activities from 7yrs up. Some Waimea Club juniors are in national develop-ment squads, with one junior a member

of the New Zealand national under 17 team.Rated among the best sports in the world for fitness (Forbes has rated squash as number 1), squash is also convenient and loads of fun. Here’s a quick refresher as to why it’s so impor-tant for us to keep healthy and fit: 1. Keep excess pounds at bayCombined with a healthy diet, aerobic exercise helps you lose weight — and keep it off.2. Increase your staminaAerobic exercise may make you tired in the short term. But over the long term, you’ll enjoy increased stamina and re-duced fatigue.3. Ward off viral illnessesAerobic exercise activates your immune system. This leaves you less susceptible to minor viral illnesses, such as colds and flu.4. Reduce your health risksAerobic exercise reduces the risk of many conditions, including obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke and certain types of cancer. Weight-bearing aerobic exer-cises, such as walking, reduce the risk of osteoporosis.5. Manage chronic conditionsAerobic exercise helps lower high blood pressure and control blood sugar. If

you’ve had a heart attack, aerobic exer-cise helps prevent subsequent attacks.6. Strengthen your heartA stronger heart doesn’t need to beat as fast. A stronger heart also pumps blood more efficiently, which improves blood flow to all parts of your body.7. Keep your arteries clearAerobic exercise boosts your high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good”) cholesterol and lowers your low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol. The potential result? Less buildup of plaques in your arteries.8. Boost your moodAerobic exercise can ease the gloomi-ness of depression, reduce the tension associated with anxiety and promote relaxation.9. Stay active and independent as you ageAerobic exercise keeps your muscles strong, which can help you maintain mobility as you get older. Aerobic ex-ercise also keeps your mind sharp. At least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three days a week seems to reduce cog-nitive decline in older adults.10. Live longerStudies show that people who par-ticipate in regular aerobic exercise live longer than those who don’t exercise regularly.

Welcome to our September Newsletter,Here we are into September al-ready and the rain just seems to keep on coming with the odd couple of days of fine sunny weather thrown in, just to keep us hoping that warmer, sunnier

days are just around the cor-ner. Hope you all have made it through the winter without too much flu and winter ills and chills. We had our meeting recently and we were very pleased to be able to welcome along the May-

or, Richard Kempthorne and the CEO of Tasman

District Council, Lindsay Mc-Kenzie. It was great to have them along, and for us to bring them up to speed with things Bright-water. The Mayor spoke to us about some of the issues that the TDC is facing, rezoning and the hardship that is placing some people under and maintaining local roads to an acceptable level that has been in the news recently to name a couple.

Do you all know about the Herit-age Leaflet that is available with all the historic points of Brightwater on it? It has been updated and we are about to send it off to the print-ers to be printed and it will then be available to the public for a gold coin. We were able to put a photo of the Mural on it.Work is still in progress on the BMX Track –we need more clay to put the finishing touches, and

plans for a safety fence are under way. There will be a working bee at some stage to finish it up so please watch this space if you are interest-ed in helping with this. The track is being well used in the mean time – this is great to hear. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 2 October in the Brightwater School Staffroom, at 7.30pm. We look for-ward to seeing you there.Your Community Association

200 children again playing football for the club, whether learning the game with the First Kicks program run by Alan & Marion Mathews every Friday afternoon, or playing in the 17th Grade in the morning with Steve Hammond before par-ticipating in senior football in the afternoon, all enjoyed their football experience this season. This season our prize-giving is again being held at the Spring Grove Hall on Sunday 23 September, where it has been held successfully for the last couple of years. With a couple of the recent weekends being rained off, for many teams there won’t have been an opportunity to get together at the end of the season, so we are looking forward to seeing many enthusiastic members coming out to celebrate the football season. The Spring Grove Hall provides a great venue for the prize-giving where players will receive participation Certificates and individual trophies, followed by a lunch and a final kick-around.A special thanks to all the coaches and managers who supported and organised teams this year, with the increase in player numbers and play-ers new to the game, it was your sup-port and encouragement that made all teams successful in players enjoy-ing the game. Also thanks to all the parents and supporters, who get the children to and from practices and games, and continue to help Waimea Plains Junior Football Club grow in the region.Waimea Plains Junior Football Club encompasses players from through-out the smaller towns of the region, including Appleby, Brightwater, Hope, Ranzau, Tapawera and Wake-field. With the continued growth of football in New Zealand, I am sure that we will see an increased num-ber of players and teams in Waimea Plains colours next year.

Pinegrove Kindergarten Mega Raf-fle WinnersThe Mega Raffle has been running for the entire month of August. Ex-citement has been building up with a prize drawn on each day of the month leading up to the grand prize

of a three day motor-home hire gen-erously donated by Bee Free Motor-homes in Brightwater. The prizegiving ceremony was a cel-ebration of not only the final prize but also of the hard work the fami-lies have contributed to selling their tickets, acknowledges the generosity of our sponsors and the organisation and support of the Family Liaison Group. The family liaison group is a volun-tary group and the Kindergarten re-lies heavily on fundraising through initiatives such as the Mega Raffle to support a range on initiatives within the Kindergarten. Chairperson Emma Nicholson has been working hard to accumulate as much support as she possibly can along with her fellow liaison group members, and some of the sponsor-ship has come from these families themselves. All the proceeds will go towards of-fice furnishing to support the Ad-ministrators role in the brand new office extension completed in April of this year. There is a sustainable focus on to-night’s event as families have been asked to bring a bread roll filling to share in a re-usable container. As members of Enviroschools pro-gramme run by under the Tasman District Council, this is one of the ways the teaching team has been able to significantly reduce waste and promote awareness of healthy food choices for children and fami-lies at Pinegrove Kindergarten. The winner of the Grand Prize was awarded to Shelley Holmes – a par-ent at the Kindergarten. She was heading home to plan a weekend away. Thanks to everyone for your support of this wonderful fundrais-ing event. Prize winners are Tanya Mc Murtrie, Annemarie Koevoet, Chanrathy, Donna Todd, Sue Bo-han Carter, Tracey Sowerbutts, Justine Ward, Soong Family, Nate, Lucy Routledge, Margaret Fraser, Colin Hoskins, Bensemann Family, Michelle Dodunski, Sport Tasman RCC, Sport Tasman RCC, Jason Stewart, Luise, P Taylor, Rachel Mc-Naughton, Megan, Mike Mitchell,

Mitchell Neal, Kurt Malietoa and faithful hunting companion Fern look very happy with their catch of two good-sized boars. Both lads are keen supporters of Wanderers and played for the club’s JAB before joining college rugby teams. Adults need to jump into the action in the senior section; categories include heaviest boar, second heaviest boar, best tusks and heaviest stag. The top spot for the seniors will go to average weight, with a prize to the value of $1000 sponsored by Excavator World, Hokitika. The hunter who caught the pig must be there to weigh it in, and to keep things fair late entries will not be accepted for weigh in after 3pm. To claim your prize and the victory you must be present at the judging and prize giving. The Saturday will not only be about the judging and prize giving as the good times will be continuing throughout the night, with weigh master for the event, Antoni Neal, performing with his band “Dog On a Bon-net” at the clubrooms afterwards.Don’t forget, you can bring the kids down to en-joy the day as this will be a fun family event with a pig carrying and wood chopping competition to keep the festivities going!Make a night of it at the Wanderers club rooms afterwards as your entry fee includes the cost of a meal and the bar will be open. Extra meals are only $10 each with under ten’s free. Each hunter can enter up to two pigs but can only take home one major prize (not including the Rugby Club Challenge Trophy). This competi-tion is for wild boars only so of course sows, bar-rows, and domestic pigs will not be eligible, and the pig must be in an edible state and not mutilat-ed. Heads must be attached and the pig must be hung on the racks until the end of the weigh in.Get on board and give the junior rugby player’s season a great send off. Go online, download your entry form, read the fine print, and get amongst it.

The Pig Hunt Challenge is going to be an awe-some event, so put your rugby boots away and get your hunting gear out; it’s time for one last match! This will be an annual event so if you win this challenge, you’ll be back to defend your title next year.Entry forms can be downloaded from The Wan-derers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge facebook page.

The sun has been busy drying out the pitches and play-ers are getting ready for the season ahead. If you’re a senior player wanting to get on an adult team, or have kids wanting to play on a Saturday, there is a team to cater for all players from beginner kiwi cricketers all the way up to senior cricket. Getting the kids involved in fun and social Sat-urday cricket is a great opportunity for them and while they learn new skills, get out in the sun and exercise, the game is all about mak-ing friends and having a good time as part of a team. Kids in Nelson are enthusiastic cricketers and love being part of the fun, your child can get in-volved in junior cricket by simply letting their

school know they are interested and the Satur-day morning draws and teams are organised from there.Junior cricket in our region has had many a successful over, with each year bringing new, excited kids to play for their schools who con-tinue playing right through to become cricket-ers for their senior team later down the track.Local Junior crickets success is due to the Waimea Toi Toi United club teaming up with the local schools to make the season happen, the only club to liaise with local schools, they are a major player in getting keen young crick-eters on a team. Club captain Jon Routhan loves seeing Nelson’s junior players get on the field. “We work in with the schools to make it eas-ier for parents. The kids tell their school they

Nelson lands NZ championshipThe biggest event in the speedway calendar is coming to Nelson this season and it’s bringing 6000 specta-tors with it.The New Zealand Home Loans NZ Super Stock Championship will be held on January 11 and 12 and is certain to sell out. Accommodation is already filling up on the nights of the championship. Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speed-way president Kris Carpenter be-lieves it is a big coup for the associa-tion. “It definitely will sell out. We’re expecting 6000 spectators per night. This is really big for the region. I’ve travelled around and watched this event for the last five seasons and there are plenty of regulars that will do the same,” says Kris.Representatives from each speedway association bid for New Zealand, South and North Island events at a national conference each year. Be-cause it landed the biggest event in the speedway calendar, Top of the South Speedway representatives

pulled the pin on bidding for other key events. “They’re quite hard to get, you have to have people voting for you and we’ve got such a good reputation of running a good cham-pionship that we pipped someone else. This event comes around every 15 years and we’ve managed to get it again in just eight or nine.”The NZ Super Stock Championship was last held in Nelson in 2004. Nel-son drivers have a great history of success in the championship with one of the country’s top competitors, Craig Boote, looking to add further glory to his already illustrious career. Former 1NZ Dale Ewers will be one of the early favourites while it would be no surprise to see Brett Nicholls and youngster Dale McKenzie pick up podium spots on their home track.Inclement weather has stalled early practices, but drivers are hoping to head out this weekend. The speedway officially opens on October 13.

World Cup beckons for young defender

Emily Jensen is hoping to create history this month. The 17 year old Waimea College starlet jetted off for a six day training camp in Switzerland last week before she ventures onto Azerbaijan for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.The Young Football Ferns have never made it out of the group stage at the world cup but Emily is confident that this year’s squad has the right mixture to challenge for higher hon-ours. “Getting out of the pool stage is our team goal and then once you get out of there any-thing can happen,” says Emily. “All along it has been our goal, knowing how cool it would be to do it.”But the qualification process could not be any harder with the Young Football Ferns drawn alongside three heavyweights in Japan, Brazil and Mexico. “Japan go in as one of the favour-ites and you’d expect Brazil to be really good so Mexico are going to be our closest competition on paper. We’re not going to go out and smoke Japan but we’ll try hard for a draw or maybe a win.”Emily’s road to the world cup may be in stark contrast to her team-mates. She is the only player that is based outside of the country’s main centres and she is only able to play for her club side once a month, as it is more than 846 kilometres away from her home in Ap-pleby. Having played in boy’s teams with Rich-mond Athletic growing up, Emily signed with the Auckland based Three Kings United for 2012. Ankle injuries picked up playing repre-sentative touch rugby delayed the start of her football season but she managed to feature a handful of times for Three Kings, including an impressive display in the successful ASB Women’s Knockout Cup final last month.Because she only makes the trip north once every four weeks, Emily is reduced to one-on-one coaching sessions on the weekends in Nelson. She also has four fitness and strength sessions which she does alone. Emily admits the preparation would have been easier if she was based in Auckland on a full-time basis. “It would have been better but then it’s hard to leave everything here. The hard thing is just motivating yourself to go out and train. It’s a bit lonely but dad offers to help sometimes.”

Footballers win national cupThe Waimea College first XI has claimed its best result in the pastt ten years by winning the Jim Wishart Cup for the first time. The Jim Wishart Cup is widely known as the best second tier competition for secondary school students in New Zealand, behind the Lotto Premier Boys competition which was held in Nelson.Waimea College spent the week in Ashburton, going through the entire tournament undefeated before facing off against Kings High School from Dunedin in the final. Both teams were tied 1-1 after full-time and twenty min-utes of extra time still could not break the deadlock, re-sulting in a penalty shoot out. Waimea kept its cool under pressure to slot the first three goals while Kings High School did the opposite, missing all of its chances to put in the ball in the back of the net.The side was coached by Martin Keetley and managed by Paul Daubney. Paul says the side was confident head-ing into the championship after performing well against Nelson College, Nayland College and Marlborough Boys College in qualifying. “As it transpired we did do well and came home with the cup. In my ten year association with the boys team it is the first time that we have won a na-tional tournament and to my knowledge it may be the first time ever that this has happened,” he says. “National tour-naments are keenly contested and you have to be at your best over a week’s tournament play to be in the reckoning. This win somewhat erasers memories of coming close on many occasions with some very strong Waimea teams in the past.”Marty’s rotation of players throughout the tournament

was crucial in getting a fit team to the final, adds Paul. “This is not to say that injuries through the week did not also occur but we had the strength in the squad to con-tinue.”

All the players performed well in the squad, which was led on the field by the captain Sam Barnett. During the week the team won seven games, only draw-ing once.

The Waimea College first XI that won the 2012 Jim Wishart Cup in Ashburton is; Paul Daubney (manager), Bruno Fontana, Daniel Grimshaw, Dion Keetley, Jeremy Ditzel, Josh Kennedy, Sam Barnett, Corey Bosecke, Nathan Ir-vine, Hamish Worsley, Luke Henman, Danny Ross, Harry Whitehead, Josh Johnson and Martin Keetley (coach). Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Ella Marwick has been selected in the New Zealand Under-17 women’s touch rugby team. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Ella Marwick didn’t have much time to trade the net-ball bib for a touch rugby singlet. The multi-talented Waimea College student has flown to Australia to link up with the New Zealand Under-17 women’s touch rugby team, just one week after starring for the Waimea College Senior A netball team at the South Island Secondary School Champi-onship.Ella is one of three Nelson players in the New Zea-land side, along with Nelson College for Girls stu-dents Nicole Drummond and Rosa Edwards. The New Zealand Under-17s will contest the Touch Football Australia X-Blades National Youth Cham-pionship in Port Macquarie, NSW. New Zealand is the only international side at the tournament, with the Australian teams being represented by each indi-vidual state.New Zealand is entered in the Under-19 competition but cannot reach the finals. Having been involved in previous age-group teams, Ella says the competition will be tough. “The Australians are just workhorses. They’re all so fit without doing any of the flashy stuff.”Ella is likely to feature in a link-winger role.
