From The School Leadership TeamThe start of 2014 seems such a long time ago, the year was ahead of us and the building program had just begun. As we finish Term 3, we have come a very long way and so far our timeline’s are holding. We have tried to keep the impact of the building program to a minimum, and on behalf of the staff we would like to thank all students for their cheerful acceptance of all the relocation moves and disruption.

We are currently finalising appointments for next year, and it’s with some sadness that John O’Sullivan Williams has accepted the position of Head of Performing Arts at St Margaret’s for 2015. This is a great career step for John and we wish him all the best and thank him for the fantastic impact he has had at Hillbrook.

The term has finished with a rush; Year 10 and 12 Drama course productions, Music concerts, Year 11 camps and Work Experience, as well as exams Year 11 and 12s. We also wish the Year 12s all the best for their Formal tonight. We know they are all very excited and looking forward to this night.

Congratulations, Holly!The Australian Council for Educational Leaders – Queensland Branch, welcomed Holly O’Sullivan Williams as a member of the Queensland Standing Committee of the national board. The Committee provides direction and support in the areas of educational advocacy, professional development and leadership awards.

Holly will serve as a member of the Committee till 2017. ACEL, founded in 1973, is the peak association for educational leaders, and today has more than 6,500 members employed in educational capacities across 25 nations.

Professor Frank Crowther (Patron, ACEL Qld), Norm Hunter (Vice-President, ACEL Qld) and Stephanie Munday-Lake (ACEL - Australian Fellow) also attended the Branch meeting.

‘Surviving Year 11, 12 and Beyond’Tuesday 14 October ~ 6pm - 7.30pm

This is an opportunity to find out what really goes on at Schoolies! A time to ask questions, clarify and hopefully be informed and reassured. Guest speakers include the Red Frogs.

Past students will also discuss their recollection of Years 11 and 12 as well as a range of post school experiences they have had which include: setting up a business, taking a Gap year and transitioning to University. All year levels are welcome!

Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival Regional FinalsCongratulations to the Year 9 Drama students who competed in the Regional Finals of the Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival on Sunday. Run by respected local theatre company Shake ‘n’ Stir, the festival saw students competing at Brisbane Powerhouse alongside other schools from South and West Brisbane regions.

Special thanks goes to Rachel Brennan, who stepped in at the last minute to replace Jordan White, who unfortunately was unable to attend due to illness. After only receiving the script on Saturday afternoon, Rachel impressed the judges by knowing all of the movements and most of the lines, not to mention delivering them with her characteristic comic flair.

After all Drama students presented Shakespearean performances in Term 2, two groups were selected to represent Hillbrook at the festival. Lucinda Jones and Sophie Magee presented a duologue from ‘Taming of the Shrew’, transforming themselves into crude male ‘tradies’. Molly Engwerda, Thomas Jackson and Rachel Brennan (filling in for Jordan White) presented the comic ‘play within a play’ scene from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

They really held their own against the other schools, most of which had senior students representing them. I may be biased, but I definitely thought they were two of the funniest scenes from their categories. Special congratulations goes to Thomas, Molly and Rachel/Jordan who have made it through to the Grand Final at Brisbane Powerhouse on 18 October. Well done!

School Dance - Parent Supervisors RequiredThe school dance is coming up on Friday 10 October, from 7-10pm. To help facilitate this event and assist the SRC Executive in making it a fun and safe environment for everyone to enjoy, a number of parents are required to supervise on the night.

There are three time slots for supervision: 7-8pm, 8-9pm and 9-10pm. If you are able to come along for an hour and help out, please email Leisa at leisab@hillbrook.qld.edu.au with your nominated time slot. Your time is much appreciated!

Stationery Kit Packing Day - Help Needed!We will be packing the stationery kits for next year’s students on Saturday 25 October and I would be grateful for some extra help. It is not a difficult task and normally only takes a couple of hours. With Year 7 joining the school next year this process will take a little longer than in previous years, however I anticipate that we should still be finished before lunch.

Hillbrook Under The StarsWe have now reached the limit for ticket sales for Hillbrook Under the Stars. There has been a fantastic response and unfortunately due to space restrictions we have had to limit numbers. Hopefully next year we will have more space to cater for more people. It promises to be a wonderful evening!

If you have paid but have not yet sent in your booking form, please do so as soon as possible. If possible, please scan it and email to katrina.c@optusnet.com.au. We will be finalising tables soon and then table captains will be sent an email to forward to the rest of the people on your table with any further information for the night.

Profits from this evening will be going to the Hillbrook Giving Tree, a new initiative which aims to support members of our community in need.

Second Hand Uniform TradingThe Hillbrook P&F is introducing a new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade second hand Hillbrook uniforms and other items online via www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au

The Sustainable School Shop is providing complimentary Annual Subscriptions until 31 December 2014, and we would encourage parents to take full advantage of this opportunity. You need to nominate Hillbrook Anglican School when you register on the Sustainable School Shop website to receive your complimentary Annual Subscription. (From 1 January 2015, normal pricing will resume for this service. Families will still be able to register and search ads for free, but to list an ad will cost $1.00.)

It is envisaged that this service will be fully functional by the beginning of Term 4. In order to assist us in building up a good base of stock items before then, it would be fantastic if Hillbrook families could go through their surplus uniform items during the school holidays, and then go online to register and list Items for Sale. It is also possible to list Wanted items if you are looking to buy.

Further details of the system will be provided to all parents in the near future. However, the website is simple and easy to use and any enquiries can be directed to the Sustainable School Shop on 1300 683 337 or through ‘Contact Us’ on their website at www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au.
