May & June 2018
Isn’t it wonderful to see the sun and
green grass again? Just as nature
moves from barrenness to fruiting, the
texts we read in worship will focus on
growth and new beginnings as well.
We will hear much about Jesus’
teachings, miracles, and conflicts,
laying the foundation for the dramatic
events that happen later in his
ministry. As we move (too quickly) from springtime
to summer outdoors, the church marks a number of
important festival days and then moves into a season
of learning, growing, and maturing.
MAY: On May 5 and 6 please pray for the 2018
South Central Synod of Wisconsin’s synod
assembly, at which—among other tasks—we are
electing a new bishop. Retired jail ministry Rev.
John Mix will preach and preside. He’s the first of
several guest voices who will bless our congregation
in the coming months. On May 13, I will be in OK,
at my niece/goddaughter’s college graduation, so
Trinity will welcome Rev. Julie Krahn as guest
preacher/presider. Pentecost is May 20, and in
keeping with the theme of the worldwide church,
Nancy Anderson and Rev. Rod Nordby will present
images of the vibrant work of Lutheran churches in
Cambodia and Malaysia immediately after worship
that day.
JUNE: In June, Trinity will welcome Rev. Dr.
Carolyn Schneider to preach and present stories of
her ministry. Carolyn will have just completed her
four-year term teaching at the seminary in Hong
Kong.
However, not all of God’s work happens in the
sanctuary. There will be other ministry opportunities
for all! Once again, Trinity will host the young adults
who participate in Bike-and-Build and have a
presence at Atwood Fest (if you are inspired to help
with either event, please speak with Kia Conrad). We
hope that the exterior wall facing the parking lot—
where our mural will go—will be mended and
cleaned in the next month or two so that we can
mount and dedicate our artwork at a spectacular
celebration in July.
Trinity is also looking at boosting the framework of
our ministry during the summer months. We’ll be
updating our Parish Protection Plan, ensuring the
safety of all our children, and exploring a new sound
system for the sanctuary. Though dates are yet to be
determined, there will be opportunities for gardeners
and spring cleaners to come and spruce up our
physical space.
How will you grow during this summer? I hope you
will take some time to drink deeply of God's good
creation, whether in far off places or in your own
back yard. Additionally, although Sunday School
takes a hiatus for the summer, you are invited to
nurture your faith inside Trinity, at other
congregations, and out in the world in a variety of
ways.
Bless you as you bloom and grow in God's grace this
summer!

Events & Information
Bible Study
Trinity continues to offer weekly exploration of the upcoming Sunday's scriptures in
the library on Thursday nights at 6:00 p.m. Additionally, there is a group learning about
the life and ministry of the apostle Paul on Sundays following worship, and we always
have copies of devotions for you to use at home.
If these offerings are not at a convenient time or setting for you to deepen your spiritual
growth, please feel free to share ideas for other ways of growing with Pastor Sue. A book study group (fiction
or nonfiction)? Contemporary health issues (aging, caregiving, etc.)? Church teachings on controversial topics?
What is it that you are yearning to discuss with other Christians? Please know that your relationship with God is
important and deserves cultivation. Trinity would like to help you in whatever way we can.
Sunday School News
The last day of Sunday School this year will be
on Sunday, May 20th. We will break for the summer
and begin again in the fall. We are fortunate to have both
Mrs. Jen Dyer (4-6 years of age children) and Mrs. Marie
Kvalheim (7+ years of age children) return in September
to teach our children next year. If you see either of them,
please say “hi” and thank them for their faithful
service. Although the Sunday School curriculum does
take a summer break, there are still plenty of
opportunities for your children to enjoy church by
worshipping with you on Sunday mornings (dancing in
the aisles is allowed) and meeting others at after church
gatherings in Fellowship Hall or outside. Come to our
family time!
Help Wanted
Assist with Worship: If you enjoy worship, it’s because many people put a lot of labor into
making our services flow beautifully. Much of the work goes on behind the scenes, so you may
not realize how many people are actually involved. We’d love to have your help! Some tasks
include setting up or cleaning up after communion, putting up and taking down banners, helping
serve communion, reading the lessons, offering up the (pre-written) prayers of the people,
ushering, counting offering money, carrying the cross, lighting the candles, singing in the choir or
playing an instrument, and many other jobs. None of these require much skill, and can be easily
taught. If helping in these ways appeals to you, please speak to Gary Turk, chair of the worship
commission ([email protected] or 608-318-1611). Join us in in making worship a meaningful
experience for all.
Join Us for Summer Choir: Do you enjoy singing but maybe haven't sung in a choir since high
school? Maybe you love to belt out your favorite tunes on the radio (or however it is that kids listen to music
these days.) Well, remember that there is safety in numbers; the Trinity choir is here for you! Don’t be shy.
Come join us in singing this summer! There are no auditions, no robes to wear, no lengthy rehearsals. We only
meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30 to learn that day's music. Just show up when you are available and have fun
with us as we sing God's praises.
Scheduling note: The Summer Choir will sing on all the Sundays in June and then periodically throughout the
summer. The exact dates in July and August will be announced later. Stay tuned!
Thank you to our Sunday school teachers
For opening our children’s eyes
To the Bible and to Jesus,
Life’s most precious prize.
Thank you Jen and Marie
For opening the minds
To God and the Holy Spirit
And for answers you help find.
For giving advice
So that we know the Lord
And be with Him in Paradise.

Atwoodfest
July 28th and 29th
Trinity has already been contacted asking for our famous fun games and
volunteers, so it will be time to get that Trinity Fishing Hole ready for action,
and set up the little duffers for their marshmallow hole-in-ones! This has
been a great fundraiser for the Wilmar Community Center, and it is fun to go
out and play at the neighborhood party, so keep those dates open!
CANOPY CENTER
“Who are all these people?” you might ask if you are at Trinity on evenings or weekends.
Often they are participants in one of the programs of the Canopy Center. The program is called
Parent to Child, and provides supervised visits for parents and children in cases where the
child has been removed from the home for one reason or another. Both social workers and
volunteers participate in the visits.
Research shows that the removal of a child is often as traumatic for the kids as the abuse/neglect they
experienced that caused the removal. When parents have their child taken, they must complete a laundry list of
things to get their child(ren) returned. The list may feel daunting for many(most) of them, but regular visits with
their child(ren) help to reinforce what they are working toward and nurture the parent-child bond.
In families with multiple children the kids often get split between family members or foster homes. Supervised
visits may be the only time the kids see one another all week. For the older kids who may feel like they are
responsible for the younger kids, this may be the only time in the week that they don't feel overwhelmed with
worry. It may be the only time the baby feels like s/he has their "parent" with them.
For all of these reasons, the visits are sacrosanct, as well as overwhelming for everyone involved. It may look
like they are only playing a board game together, but this may be the first time the parent has ever sat down and
really played with their child. Too often the parents don't know how to be the parent their child needs them to
be. Canopy tries to teach them how to just enjoy one another's company. Feelings ride high for both parents and
kids because they know that the visit will end, and they will have to go to different homes again.
VOLUNTEER If you would like to be trained as a volunteer to assist with these meetings, the next series of
training sessions begin in early June. Please contact the Canopy Center’s volunteer coordinator, Lia Stratton
([email protected]) or 608-729-1134 for more information.
Additional note: We ask that everyone recognize that these meetings cannot be interrupted (unless there is an
emergency, of course). We are happy to talk to anyone before or after the visit but not during the visit.
Depending on the family and their needs, the staff may have to remain in constant close supervision to see and
hear everything that happens during the visit to ensure a child's safety so having the staff pulled away may
actually be harmful.
BOY SCOUTS
Phone Book Donations: The Boy Scouts are working with Feathered Friends Sanctuary &
Rescue, a non-profit organization located in Edgerton, Wisconsin, dedicated to the care and
placement of exotic birds. The organization is seeking phone books that the birds love to tear
apart for ‘therapy.’ (Phone books can be left in the collection box located in the Narthex.)

Save the Date…
Bike and Build will be pedaling in and staying with us from Monday July 9th to
Wednesday July 11th. Trinity will continue our tradition of hosting a lasagna dinner on July 9th
to welcome the group, followed by a fun presentation from Bike and Build. We hope you will
join us!
Notes of Thanks and Appreciation
Dear Friends…I would like to thank my Trinity family for their thoughts and prayers when I was going through
my heart procedure. Thanks also to Pastor Sue for visiting me at the hospital.
I am feeling so much better and getting back on my feet. See you at church. Shirley Olson

THANK YOU…Holy Week is a solemn and beautiful time in the life of a congregation,
following Jesus on his final earthly journey from betrayal through resurrection. Each of
the worship services on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter
morning--are different from one another. That means many, many people contribute to
the power of the experience.
We would like to thank everyone who read lessons or prayers, provided flowers, prepared and/or served
communion, cleaned up after us all in the kitchen, stripped or decorated the sanctuary, cooked or served Easter
breakfast, played handbells, sang in the choir, gave directions, washed feet, lit candles, moved heavy stuff,
answered questions, handed out bulletins or butterflies, welcomed visitors, or any other of the numerous tasks
that go into making our congregation hospitable and our services holy. You are all treasures.

STAND UP AND SING FOR KIDS
Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 6:30pm-10:00pm
The East Side Club (3735 Monona Dr.)
The Stand Up and Sing for Kids event benefits both Canopy Center and our Dane
County CASA program. Our mission is to help strengthen families and support children,
teens and adults impacted by trauma and adversity.
This fun-filled event features performances by local celebrities— and you!—with a karaoke-style cover band.
Our celebrities will kick things off before audience members get to jump up on stage and rock out. The evening
will also feature a live and silent auction, hearty hors d'oeuvres, and a decadent dessert buffet. Sponsorship is a
wonderful opportunity for your business or organization to support Canopy Center’s important work while also
receiving meaningful recognition among the many Madison-area professionals in attendance. Please visit:
canopy/center.org for more information.
Living in Communion with the Moravian Church –
Special Event, Tuesday, May 15
Where: Oakwood Village University Woods Campus
6205 Mineral Point Road, Madison, Wisconsin 53705
When: May 15, 10-2:30; complementary lunch
Are you interested in learning more about Moravians and in finding ways to deepen our relations with them in
our own synod and congregations? Then come to a time of worship and discussion on Tuesday, May 15!
The ELCA has been in a “full communion” relation with the Moravian churches of the Northern and
Southern provinces since 1999. This mutual recognition allows not only for sharing the sacraments and
common mission but also for exchange of pastors. See:
http://www.elca.org/Faith/Ecumenical-and-Inter-Religious-Relations/Full-Communion/History#moravian.
The invitation comes from the Lutheran-Moravian Coordinating Committee, charged with helping these
church bodies live more fully into their full communion relationship. This year the annual meeting of the
Committee is in Madison.
Gathering with members of the Committee will begin at 10:00, with celebration of Holy Communion
at 10:30, followed by times of discussion of “where we are and where we can go” until about 2:30, including
lunch. All those interested, both pastors and lay people, are welcome!
This is an opportunity to explore what ways forward together our two traditions can find in this place.
RSVP: [email protected]; or [email protected]. Or questions to Kelly (Moravian pastor,
committee chair).
