Second Sunday of Advent From the Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It’s difficult to believe that the second Sunday of Advent has arrived, and that our Christmas preparations are all going ahead. . Decorations are being put up, liturgies are being organized, presents are being purchased and dropped off for families in need. Of course our greatest preparation is the human heart, as we prepare for the coming of Christ, as a child and as the Resurrected Messiah, returning in all His glory. There are times when I look at the time of Advent, and think, “Why are we spending four weeks (or almost four weeks) preparing for Christmas? Why don’t we just have a few days and then celebrate?” Part of the reasoning is so that we can pay attention to the actual season of Christmas, which lasts into January with the Baptism of the Lord, but another aspect of this is that people seem so over Christmas, by the time it arrives, it would give less time to grow tired of it in anticipation. But the truth is, what people are tired of, what has exhausted them so much, is not the preparation for Christmas itself, but the commercial aspects, and the preparations for family, and all the other things that have come to accompany the holidays. Even the majority of the music we are exposed to does not necessarily prepare us for the coming of Christ, but speaks about how cold it is outside, when Santa Claus is going to arrive, and if he’s going to get caught kissing mommy, and about poor grandma falling victim to reindeer. I have written in the past about one of my favorite Christmas songs, being Johnny Mathis’ When a Child is Born, and there are others that really pull on my heart strings, like Christmas 1914, which is about the interactions of British and German soldiers during the Christmas truce during WWI, and Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s rendition of the Little Drummer Boy. What they have in common is a focus on the reason for Christmas, which is the Incarnation of God, as a child, so that we could come to know Him more intimately, so that we could enter into a relationship, in spite of our differences, and come together to worship Him. Christ’s Incarnation is something so unbelievably special, yet at times we fail to recognize Its significance. What we celebrate, is that Event, when God, Who brought everything that exists, both in time and space, into being, through His Word (and that right there is something we struggle to understand, as this Word, or Logos, is part of God’s very Being, not separate from Him in any way, existing as One from the beginning, since it was through this Word that Time itself came into being, therefore nothing could exist before then), chose to become part of His creation, in order to let us know Him, and enter deeply into this relationship. It is something that St. Athanasius described as “God became man so that men could become gods.” We have been elevated beyond the dignity of mere creatures, to something Divine. All of the Church Fathers, those men and women who gave their wisdom to the early Church and guided our spiritual paths for 2000 years, spent many days, months and years on the subject of the Incarnation. For the ancient world, the idea that the Deity described, One who was beyond limits, beyond flaws, all knowing and all powerful, perfect in every way, would become part of creation, which was flawed, limited and imperfect, in order to bring it to perfection, was beyond human understanding, and had to be contemplated with eyes and ears of Faith. For those reading their words, for those focusing on the Incarnation in our modern world, the amazement is still there, and we wait to celebrate that event. Perhaps four weeks is not enough time to spend in contemplation and preparation for the coming of Christmas, but it is what we have been given, so let’s make the most of the time we have been given and pray we understand the love God has for us in coming among us as Christ. December 8, 2019- Second Sunday of Advent THE LONG-AWAITED ONE As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace. After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s message about preparation for “the one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets.
