Christ the King Sunday From the Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, which the Church has designated as Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, more commonly known as Christ the King. In placing the celebration of Christ the King at the end of the Church year, we are reminded that at the end of time, Christ will come as judge and as savior.

Oftentimes we do not like to think of Jesus as judge, preferring the warm fuzzy Jesus who turns a blind eye to all behavior; sort of a Christian Bachanalia. We know that Jesus suffered and died for our salvation, and through the ministry of the Church, which is His presence on earth, will forgive the sins we confess, but that does not exclude judgement. Neither does it allow for a religious world view that anything can be reconciled to Christianity.

Confusion about what is an agenda and what is authentic religious beliefs permeates our culture, partially be-cause of the influence of Protestantism, and the usurpation of reason by opinion. Protestantism , which has its origins in rejecting certain aspects of Catholic doctrine or practice, has resulted in uncountable mutations over the past five hundred years. Even within the Protestant faith traditions, which group themselves under common names, differences result in an inability to find common ground outside the name. Depending upon governing bodies, certain Christian Faith traditions practice a type of laissaz faire attitude, or allow ministers of one denomination to be hired by another, regardless of the theology of the different faiths. The influence of secularism, radical individualism, and the elevation of opinion, illustrated by the equality shown to any-body posting on the internet, regardless of expertise or lack thereof, has further separated believers from belief.

One of the great theologians of the twentieth century, Hans Urs von Balthazar, insisted that Theology .should be done on one’s knees. That is to say that we come to know Christ and His plan for us better when we hum-ble ourselves and ask for the grace of understanding. If we ask why we should be humble before Christ, we only need to look at the Cross and realize that the creator of the universe, became part of His creation, was abused and hung naked on a tree to die. Through that action, we have the forgiveness of our sins, and through his resurrection and Ascension have given the gift of eternal life in His presence.

No politician, social theorist, or university professor has come close to doing for each of us what Christ has done. What we receive in this relationship is beyond anything this world could imagine let alone offer. To acknowledge what has been given to us, to live in response to Christ’s self giving love, causes us to behave in a way that frees us from fear of punishment, and we look at His judgement as just good. Recognizing out own need for salvation, we come to the last days rejoicing.

Pax,

Fr. Henry

November 24, 2019 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonethe-less, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are chil-dren of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep long-ing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colos-sians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. Paluch Co.  READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Dn 1:1-6, 8-20; Dn 3:52-56; Lk 21:1-4 Tuesday: Dn 2:31-45; Dn 3:57-61; Lk 21:5-11 Wednesday: Dn 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Dn 3:62-67; Lk 21:12-19 Thursday: Dn 6:12-28; Dn 3:68-74; Lk 21:20-28 Thanksgiving Day, Suggested: Sir 50:22-24; Ps 145:2-11; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Lk 17:11-19 Friday: Dn 7:2-14; Dn 3:75-81; Lk 21:29-33 Saturday: Rom 10:9-18; Ps 19:8-11; Mt 4:18-22 Sunday: Is 2:1-5; Ps 122:1-9; Rom 13:11-14; Mt 24:37-44            TREASURES FRO M OUR TRADITION Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope ex-plained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church sometimes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Original-ly on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year. Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service.   FORGIVENESS The glory of Christianity is to conquer  by forgiveness. —William Blake

—William Blake
