PREFACEIt is a mistaken idea that children learn to read onlythrough bare, spiritless statement of fact. At no otherperiod is imagination so naively active, and to the imag-inative faculty the Brownies appeal. The editors have arranged the text so as to repeatwords constantly ; they have likewise placed the subjectmatter in its proper season, beginning with the earlyFall, when school opens. While definite lessons havebeen indicated on every page, it is to be hoped that thepictures in themselves will suggest to the teacher addi-tional topics for talks and blackboard sentences, and atthe same time furnish the interest and incentive to in-duce the child to learn to read the text. The Appendixcontains directions for the use of the vocabulary and ofthose pages on which the play element is distinctly em-phasized.To understand the characteristics of the Brownies isthe essential requisite for the understanding of thislittle Primer. The genial, hearty, and helpful spiritwith which the little men are supposed always to gothrough their tricks, is largely the cause of the successthey have had. May they find equal favor in the schoolroom, while the children are learning to read.Palmer Cox.

BROWNIES, like fairies and gob-lins, are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight inharmless pranks and helpful deeds. They work and sport ivhile wearyhouseholds sleep, and never allowthemselves to be seen by mortal eyes.
