JULIUS HAYMANB.A., L.L.B.

EDITOR 1937-2000

The Jewish Standard is published monthly in Toronto and Montreal by Michael Hayman B.A., M.A. Editor and Publisher. 1912 A Avenue Road,, Toronto,Ontario M5M 4A1 (416) 537-2696; Printed and bound in Toronto, Canada by Regal Press Canada. Publication Mail Registration Number 40055943

The annual High Holy Daysstocktaking which is, theoreticallyat least, part of the religious tradi-tion of Judaism, is ordinarily morea matter of form than it is of sub-stance. Very few of us reflect seri-ously about where we may havefallen short during a year in whichwe have been subjected to thestrains and tensions of surviving ina complex and difficult world. Stillfewer of us, in these secular days, hold any fear of incurring Hiswrath. And how many of us actu-ally emerge from the High HolyDays with the conviction that it isour bounden religious duty toavoid, in the year to come, the sinsof which we have been so obvious-ly guilty during the year which hasgone.

It is the failure of the reli-gious atmosphere of the High HolyDays to alter the level of personalmorality and social justice amongus which robs these days of theirtrue significance and purpose.Attendance at shul is an enrichingexperience. There are few Jews sodetached from their Judaic pastthat they are unable to experiencethe strength of the bond whichunites them to their Hebrew ances-tors. There are few Jews, duringthe Days of Awe, who do not feelsome kinship with those who havesuffered so grievously for theirfaith. There are few Jews, as theysit in shul during these Days ofPenitence, who do not reflect onthe grandeur of Jewish life - a lifeof sorrow, to be sure, but a life noless of joy, a life of tragedy but a

life no less of triumph. This feeling that there is a

common bond between us andJews the world over and a com-mon link which binds us to thegenerations of our ancestors, might well justify the serviceswhich attract Jews, in their mil-lions, to the synagogues. But it isnot enough. Unless religion haswithin it the power to change ourlives, to persuade us to yield upsome of our avarice and pride, unless it has the power to teach usunderstanding and compassion, itwill be more a nostalgia for a his-toric link than an attempt to findmeaning in Jewish life for thecenturies before us.

Jewish survival is importantand there is an obligation on thepart of every Jew of conviction tohelp develop the techniques whichwill ensure that survival. But ifsurvival becomes an end in itself, with the purpose of survival nomore than an afterthought, wemay be sure that even the vastnumber of intermittent synagoguegoers, who every Rosh Hashanahcreate the ”mushroom syna-gogue”, will dwindle and, ultimate-ly, disappear.

Synagogues during the nextfew weeks will be packed to theirdoors. The critical observer, how-ever, will question the extent towhich this overflow synagogueattendance has any real impact onthe lives of the “worshippers” andto ask whether it really meansthat much in the long-term sur-vival of Jewish life.

It isnot a coincidence thatRabbi Margolin is thehead of the EuropeanJewish Association.

Margolin accusedSchudrich of “torpedoing”the meeting. His angerbecame even more pro-nounced when the Polishparliament voted 222-178to uphold the ban. Hecalled Schudrich “incom-petent” and demanded hisresignation. Schudrich, hesaid, acts “irresponsibly,as though Poland is hisown fiefdom, while ignor-ing the need for coordinat-ed action on an issuewhich affects all ofEuropean Jewry andbeyond”.

And so the internalstruggle continues as thetwo groups vie with oneanother for a leadershiprole. The European JewishAssociation has made lifemore difficult for Schudrichby hiring a Polish national-ist lawyer to challenge theshechitah ban. The onetime head of the disbandedLeague of Polish families, afar right movement oftenaccused of anti-Semitism,was hired “because of hisprofessional skills and con-nections in the Polish politi-cal scene.

Rabbi Margolinbelongs to the Chabad-affil-iated Centre of Europe whileMichael Schudrich is thePolish chief rabbi. JERUSALEM’S LIGHT RAILWAY HAS NOW BEEN UP AND RUNNING FOR TWO YEARS. TRAVELfrom Pisgat Ze’ev to Mount Herzel has been cut from 90 minutes when the trains started runningto 49 minutes. But anyone who has used the service is aware that problems still need to be addressed. The rail was designed initially to carry some 50,000 people but is now carrying 100,000 daily. The tworail cars per train is simply insufficient. Purchasing tickets can also be frustrating. Human gridlock atstations is all too common as impatient Israelis try to get on and off at the same time.

Rabbi Schudrich, aU.S. born rabbi who haslived in Poland since 1992,and was named chief rabbiin 2004, counters by sayingthat “we cannot risk thatour efforts will be hinderedby the actions of people whowill not bear the conse-quences of their interfer-ence” . “The European

It takes a pretty fer-tile imagination to correlatea story about alleged politi-cal bias at the IRS and sex-ual abuse in the U.S. mili-tary to the Middle East con-flict. Leave it to CBCreporter Neil Macdonald, aself-appointed pontificatorperched from Washington,to twist unrelated worldaffairs stories into criti-cisms of Israel.

In an analysis piecepublished on the CBC’swebsite on June 6, 2013,

Macdonald included the fol-lowing irrelevant smearagainst Israel and Canadiansupport for the Jewish state: “In Canada, do StephenHarper and his most parti-san supporters actuallythink down deep, thatIsrael may actually bearsome of the blame fori t s t r o u b l e s w i t h t h e

What makesthese stores unique is that they cater to both Israelisettlers and West Bank Palestinians. PLAY

The Jewish Standard, September 2013 7

The Merchant ofVenice is being staged atStratford, Ontario this yearand it can be assumed thatit will be an outstandingsuccess, at least from thepoint of view of attendance. The play has many virtues. It is a dramatic masterpieceby probably the most com-petent playwright sinceSophocles. Shylock himselfhas been an ideal instru-ment by which actors havedemonstrated their talentand versatility. AndShakespeare was not only aplaywright but a poet andsome of the most exquisitepoetry in the English lan-guage rolls off the tongues

of many of his characters.Today the world,

generally, will not acceptany obvious attempt toarouse hatreds and preju-dice against the Jews. Andso every effort is made tosoften the impact of theanti-Semitism in TheMerchant of Venice. The nat-ural admiration forShakespeare’s incompara-ble genius makes it difficultto accuse him of anti-Semitism and there are fewiconoclasts among hisadmirers. Yet it is as diffi-cult to overlook the anti-Semitism of the play as it isto transform Shylock from

TEMPLE SINAI LEADERS HELP FAMILIES GRIEVE

By DAVID EISENSTADT

In 1993, when mywife Rhoda and our sonsHarris and Evan lost fourpar en ts/g randpar en tswithin a horrific sixmonths, I certainly foundspiritual comfort atTemple Sinai.

Key to dealing withmy grief involved connect-ing with a number of ded-icated Temple volunteerswho led morning andevening services. Manywent the extra mile asevening shiva readers, often travelling great dis-tances in all sorts ofweather, all year 'round to"get it done". This group, Ifacetiously dubbed "theshiva patrol."

Since that time, ourtwo sons have on occasionreminded me that when Ichoose to retire, my next

career should be takingmy smicha and becominga Rabbi. They are serious, but right now I'm keepingmy day job.

So roughly 20 yearslater, I am still on patrol, enjoy the calling and amable to participate when arequest is made, wheneverpossible.

Like most of my fel-low lay leaders, we all havestories and have seen grieffirst hand.....sometimes inthe form of an Irish wake-type celebration with mobsof "mourners"; in othercases, and more sadly, leading a shiva servicewith fewer than 10 inattendance. And yes, as Ionce reminded a non-Temple Sinai mourner, hedidn't need to worry aboutwhether we had enough

embargo their personalviews in their professionalwork? Macdonald’s appar-ent preoccupation withIsrael seems to be theexception to the rule allow-ing him to use CBCresources to attack Israel, time and again.

This past January,Macdonald wrote an analy-sis piece published on theCBC’s website where heclaimed that Israel’s “hard-line” government “hasshown little interest innegotiating a two-statesolution with thePalestinians.” DespiteIsrael’s consistent calls fornegotiations without pre-conditions to solve theIsraeli-Palestinian impasse,

and its regular overturesand concessions to obstruc-tionist “hardline” Palestinianleader Mahmoud Abbas,Macdonald was of the opin-ion that Israel doesn’t wantpeace.

One recalls howMacdonald used his CBCTwitter account in January2012 to scandalously insin-uate that Israel has anissue with controlling gunsaimed at non-Israelis. Aftera barrage of criticismensued, Macdonald “volun-tarily closed” his Twitteraccount.

peated again.But just seven

months later, in a December2004 report on a deadly al-Qaeda terror attack on theAmerican consulate inJeddah, Saudi Arabia,Macdonald aired a sourcewho blamed the U.S. rela-tionship with Israel for theattack. The only personinterviewed in Macdonald’sreport was Alan Keiswetterof the Saudi-financedMiddle East Institute, whostated that America was “inthe pockets of (formerIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel)Sharon.”

Also in December of2004 – in the midst of aPalestinian terror war thatsaw Israeli families blownup in buses and restau-rants – Macdonald wrote ananalysis on CBC’s websitestating that “if Palestinianshave committed terror, theIsraelis have certainly com-mitted war crimes.”Macdonald then raised thequestion of whether Jewishsettlers, “thousands ofwhom are well armed andovertly bellicose, constitutecivilians or combatants.”Macdonald appeared tohave been suggesting thatthe murder of Israeli set-tlers may not in fact be “ter-rorism.” The sentence waslater amended online aftercomplaints to the CBC.Finally, in 2002, Macdonaldasked rhetorically whetherthe terror group Hezbollahis “a national liberationmovement or, as Israel andits supporters maintain, amurderous global menace?”

discovered neutrality, Al-Nour, the largest Salafistparty was a key element ofthe coalition that deposedPresident Mohamed Morsiof the Brotherhood. TheSalafis provided the largelysecular organizations thereligious cover they neededto portray their revolt asbeing against dictatorshipand not religion.

“The protesterscould have never deposedMorsi without some reli-gious backing,” Al-AhramStrategic Studies CenterFellow Emad Gad told TheMedia Line. “And Al-Nourgave it to them.”

But as quickly asthey offered their support, the Salafis retracted it whenthey learned Nobel laureateand arch-secularistMohamed ElBaradei wouldbe named prime minister inan interim government.

“Egypt is an Islamiccountry,” Al-Nour leader Dr.Hisham Abu Nasr told TheMedia Line. “It has no placefor anti-Muslim men likeElBaradei.”

Worshippers at theAl-Munira mosque agree. They believe that ElBaradei, who is a formerhead of the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency, andhis secularist clique is benton Westernizing Egyptrather than returning it toits Islamic roots.

Darwish. But when askedwhy he supported Al-Nour’sdecision to back the anti-Morsi forces, he replied,“because the sheikhs sayso.”

That is a commonrefrain in the Salafi worldand explains why the move-ment has historically sup-ported the government inpower rather than seekingto topple them like otherIslamist movements.Salafis rely on the Qur’anicverse “O believers, obeyGod, and obey theMessenger and those inauthority among them” toexplain their support forsecular governments. Suchbacking has sheltered themfrom the crackdown otherIslamist movements haveexperienced, allowing themto build educational andsocial networks throughoutthe Arab world.

“The Salafists arevery strong here,” notesMuhammad Salah, Cairobureau chief of the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat. “Ifthey step out of line politi-cally, they could lose theirsupport from above.”

But maneuveringbetween their social base’sdesires and the tacit sup-port they need to receivefrom the authorities to pros-per has become a delicatebalancing act. At the Ibn Al-Jawzi Salafi center in the

southern city of Giza, AtifSha’ban illustrates thisdilemma. The 43-year oldteacher is thankful for thejob he has preaching to dis-illusioned youth. But he isequally frustrated with Al-Nour’s decision to bringdown the first Islamist gov-ernment Egypt has known.

“The Brotherhoodwas good for Islam,” he tellsThe Media Line pointing tothe adolescents in his cen-ter. “Morsi helped Islam. Why do we need to go backto the (President Hosni)Mubarak years,” he asks, referring to the presidentdeposed in 2011.

Analysts here saythat Al-Nour had very littlewiggle room in the daysleading up to the June 30thcoup.

“The army helpedmake the Salafis a powerfulpolitical force after Mubarakfell,” notes Cairo Universitypolitical science professorMu’taz Billah Abd Al-Fatah.“Al-Nour owes the generalsand they cashed-in on June30th.”

Average Egyptiansthough scoff at any talk ofcollusion between theSalafis and the military.

Just to make it morecomplicated, there are dif-ferent ID cards. Israeli citi-zens, Jewish and Arab, carry ID cards in a blueplastic folder. Inside, thecard itself lists the bearer’snationality as “Israeli.”Some 20 percent of Israel’scitizens are Arab, and legal-ly they are entitled to fullrights, including votingrights. The current Israeliparliament has 16 Arabmembers out of a total of120 parliamentarians. Many Arab citizens of Israel, however, say they feel dis-criminated against and thatmunicipal budgets for Arabtowns in Israel are lowerthan those of Jewish towns. The Higher Arab MonitoringCommittee recently releaseda report charging that thereis a shortage of 6100 class-rooms and 4000 teachersfor the upcoming schoolyear in the Arab sector.

Palestinians who livein the West Bank carry theirID cards in a bright greenfolder. Called a “hawiyye” inArabic, Palestinians whowant to enter Israel needboth the ID card and a spe-cial army-issued permit. Those permits can some-times be easy to get. Forexample, Israel allowedmore than 300,000Palestinians to enter Israelduring the recent holidaythat ended the Muslim holymonth of Ramadan. Once

inside Israel, many madetheir way to the beachesalong the Mediterraneancoast – a treat for land-locked Palestinians.

Where the ID cardsget even more confusing iswhen it comes toJerusalem. Latest figuresshow that Jerusalem ishome to 508,000 Jews and293,000 Palestinians, mak-ing a total population of801,000. The vast majorityof Jews who live inJerusalem are Israeli citi-zens, as Israel offers auto-matic citizenship to anyonewith one Jewish grandpar-ent. Some Palestinians, likeMoufid Batarseh, a 57-year-old Palestinian taxi driver, are Israeli citizens as well.

“About ten years agoI decided to become an

Israeli citizen,” he tells TheMedia Line while travelingon Jerusalem’s light railtrain that traverses bothArab and Jewish neighbor-hoods in the city. “I used totravel to Europe and it wasjust easier to have an Israelipassport.”

In 1967, when Israelexpanded and annexed eastJerusalem, it offeredPalestinians citizenship. Most declined, saying thateast Jerusalem must even-tually be the capital of thePalestinian state. Theyinsist that accepting Israelicitizenship is equivalent toaccepting Israeli controlover Jerusalem. Even today, only about five percent ofeast Jerusalem Palestinianshave Israeli citizenship.

authorities on Shakespeare,in her book ShakespeareWithout Tears. wrote aboutthe Shylock she sees in TheMerchant of Venice: “Thereis very little that is sympa-thetic about this particularJew. He loved his wife,Leah; he loves his daughterJessica...but he loves themas his possessions, like histurquoise and his ducatsand his race and hisrevenge. His, his. It is thekeynote of the man; thepassion of possession raisedto demonic power, driven bythe circumstance of his

world to the snarling, merci-less defence of the corneredrat. His very speecheschoke with suppression, with poison...” And again,“his far too savage words forlaughter; too tragic forhatred; but he rejects equal-ly the justification of senti-mentality.”

What do we thenmake of Shylock’s famous“hath not a Jew eyes”speech? “The snarling, merciless, defence of the

cornered rat”. And we sus-pect that Shakespeare knewvery well that the audiencewho heard that notable andmuch quoted defense wouldnot react with “you know, the poor old man has acase” but would probablyfill the theatre with cries of“hang ‘im, hang ‘im”.Shakespeare, Webster con-cludes, “was not anti-Semitic”. Perhaps not. Buthe was catering to the anti-Semitism of sixteenth cen-

tury English theatre-goers?

The Merchant ofVenice is a great play. But there is no sympathyfor Shylock. To temperits anti-Semitism is “todistort Shakespeare’sintention”. Better toacknowledge it and toplace it in its proper con-text as part of the anti-Semitic baggage the Jewshave had to carry as aresult of Christian malev-olence and hatred overthe two millenia since theCrucifixion.

In 1933 theWashington Post was on theverge of bankruptcy. It wasput up for auction. And itwas Jewish investor EugeneMeyer who bought thefloundering daily, turningaround the bottom line, andmaking it the reputablevoice that it has become.

OF ALL THE DANGER SPOTS IN THE WESTBank, Hebron is probably the area Israelis fear themost. While there was no formal checkpoint as weentered Hebron, the Israelis had set up an“instant” checkpoint as they searched for thosethey suspected were plotting a terrorist attack. Also, since Jewish Israelis cannot legally enterHebron without permission, Soldiers checked ourvehicle to ensure that our cab driver was Arab andthat we were not Israeli citizens. Hostility amonglocal Palestinians to the Israeli presence was pal-pable in Hebron, more so than anywhere else inthe West Bank.
