1933- WHAT ELSE WAS HAPPENING? (within five years before and after 1933)

1928- (June 21) First Capital to Capital Yacht Race from Olympia to Juneau Alaska. 1928- Penicillin is discovered. In Olympia, Legion Way trees planted by American Legion. 1928- Olympia Airport is acquired. On Sept 9, fire destroys clocktower on Old Capitol Bldg. 1929- Vatican City becomes an independent country. 1929- The first Academy Awards Ceremony held in California. 1929- (Oct 24) The stock market crash signals the beginning of the Great Depression. 1930- The painting "American Gothic" is introduced. First World Cup soccer game in Uruguay. 1930- Olympia first uses crossing guards. Many old abandoned cars dumped in Budd Inlet. 1930- A patent is granted for the first gas turbine engine, forerunner of the first jet engine. 1930- Thurs. Co. Courthouse built on Capitol Way. Last chautauqua on site before construction 1931- Canada becomes self-governing within the British Empire. 1931- Worst flood of all time occurs on Huang He River in China killing 3,700,000 people. 1931 - GM and Dupont produce FREON for refrigeration and aerosols. Photoflash invented. 1931 - (Aug 13) Second bandstand dedicated in Olympia's Sylvester Park. 1931 - Dick Tracy comic strip first drawn. Empire State Bldg completed in New York City. 1932- The cyclotron splits the atom. First electron microscope constructed. 1932- "Pet and Doll Parade" begins in Olympia. KGY moves from St. Martins to downtown. 1932- (June 3) Lou Gehrig hits four home runs in one game.

1933-(January 17) HUNGER MARCH HELD IN OLYMPIA

1933- Fluorescent lamps and a new soda pop called 7-Up are introduced. 1933- (June) The historic frigate Constitution (bit 1797) visits Olympia for ten days.

Olympia Chamber of Commerce issues wooden "oyster money." 1933- Proposal to dig a ship canal from Olympia to Grays Harbor strongly considered. 1933- President Franklin Roosevelt begins New Deal. Grand Coulee Dam project approved. 1933- Modern Olympia Brewery plant built, (expanded greatly later). 1933- Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor and then "Fuhrer" of Germany. 1933- Olympia- 11 legislators including Warren Magnuson rent Sylvester Home for session. 1933- (Dec) The 21st Amendment repeals the 18th, making liquor sales legal again. 1934- The Florida Everglades becomes national park. First ski tow invented in Woodstock, VT. 1934- The Sunset Highway over Washington's Snoqualmie Pass is paved. 1935- Color film is introduced by the Eastman Kodak Company. WA sales tax created. 1935- (June 28) The Spar Restaurant opens in downtown Olympia. 1935- Social Security is established this year. First radar system developed. 1936- Gone With The Wind is published. Whitman Mission is declared a national historic site. 1936- Boulder Dam is completed (renamed Hoover Dam in 1947). 1937- (Jan) Olympia's Oddfellows building destroyed by fire. (Sept) Martin Way is dedicated. 1937- Carlson patents first automatic copier: the XEROX 914. Golden Gate Bridge is built. 1937- North Coast Bus Lines Depot opens on 7th & Capitol Way in Olympia. 1937- The Hobbit is published. Disney releases the movie Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. 1937- Olympia Airport runways paved and hangar built as WPA project. 1937- (July 1) Amelia Earhart's airplane crashes somewhere near New Guinea. 1938- The process of dismantling Little Hollywood in Olympia begins. (Completed in 1941.) 1938- Fission discovered. Orson Wells' broadcast " War of the Worlds" creates scare in U.S. 1938- First paperback-The Good Earth published. First nylons and nylon bristle toothbrushes. 1938- FDR signs act establishing Washington's Olympic National Park.
