FACULTY Department Chair Wilbur F. Stewart began his third decade as chair of the department. During this period, he served as business manager and editor of The Agricultural Education Magazine and served as vice-president of the American Vocational Association. DEPARTMENT LOCATION 1937-1947 At the start of this decade, the department had been in room 323 Campbell Hall for 8 years. The department would stay in Campbell Hall until 1948. Campbell Hall provided two classrooms for the Department of Agricultural Education. One included a storage room - a private office for the chairman and a sizeable area for the secretary and the other members of the staff. Harold Kenestrick, John McClelland, Ray Fife, Chester Hutchinson, and Claude E. Rhoad. 1937 to 1947 Department Faculty: 1937-1947 The third decade started with Wilbur Stewart, H. G. Kenestrick, and John McClelland. McClelland left in 1939 to accept the position as Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Education at Iowa State University, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1966. In 1938, Ray Fife returned to Ohio State to head up the program of research and to assist in graduate education. Chester S. Hutchinson (BS ‘24), a former instructor at West Liberty, joined the faculty in 1939. Hutchinson remained with the department for three years before leaving to become Junior Dean of the College in 1941. Claude E. Rhoad (BS ‘33, MS ’37, PhD ‘43) joined the resident staff in 1941 to fill Hutchinson’s position. Rhoad had previously been an instructor at the West Jefferson training center. Curriculum A new class was added after Ray Fife returned to Ohio State. This graduate course, 809: Research for Teachers in Vocational Education, was devoted to a study of the techniques and procedures appropriate to studies in graduate education. The course promoted research with individual projects in planning, organizing, and projecting appropriate studies. In the mid-forties, the number of credit hours required for graduation was increased to 210. A quarter of field experience, called Apprentice Teaching, was added in the 1946-47 academic year. Training Center Locations The third decade began with five training centers: Canal Winchester, Hilliard, Grove City, Westerville, and the newly added West Jefferson. Grove City would close as a training center in 1941 and Summit Station would replace Grove City. Summit Station (below) would also close after a year. During the war, farm equipment was rationed and there was a country-wide effort to repair machinery. Evening schools were revamped with a focus on Machinery Repair: “Now as never before there is a need to encourage the repairing and rebuilding of farm implements that have been discarded or are out of adjustment. In the photo bottom right, high school students learn woodworking. Staff 1937-1947: Hellen Killworth entered her 9 th year of service in 1937. This decade started with two staff: Killworth and Robert Barb. They were joined by Fred Ludwig in 1937 and Virginia Stolle in 1938. Barb took a position as an accountant for the Division of Vocational Education in 1939, Stolle left in 1940, and Ludwig took a position as secretary for the downtown office of the Department of Agricultural Education in 1941. Veronica Waidelich, Gay Dalrymple, Pauline Gerber, and Jean Nawman would also spend some time on staff in the department. The decade ended with two staff members: Killworth and Nawman. Left: H. E. The department would graduate a total of 10 PhDs and 19 Masters’ degrees during this decade. Wilbur F. Stewart would serve as advisor for the majority of these graduates, advising seven PhD dissertations and nine Masters’ theses. Fife, Kenestrick, and Rhoad would also serve as advisors during this decade. An Expanding Adult Program was another focus of the war effort, Adult Evening Classes had been a focus before the war, but these efforts increased dramatically during the war years.
