FOOTSCRAY TROUNCED.

RICHMOND'S CLOSE CALL.

Footscray, who have sha.red the leadwith Essendon all tlu'ough the season, were soundly trounced ,by the brilliantCollingwood side and have now droppedto third place on the League Ladder.ColJ.ingwood outclassed the Bulldogs

in all departments and now occupysecond place and appear to be safe forthe "double chance."Richmond had a difficult task at Gee-

long, where the home side gave theTigers a great shock and after leading athalf-time, were only defeated by threegoals.Hawthorn gave Melbourne a hard

battle at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It w~ ~ pai'ticula.rly keenly fought con-test and it was not until the final quarterthat Melbourne, :by kicking 7 goals, gained the upper hand and went on to .a good victory.Fitzroy are playing premiership football

at the moment and in successive weeksthe Maroons have easily beaten R.<:.sen-don, Carlton and South Melbou.rne, but.unfortunately, they have Imide their runtoo late and cannot make the final four.Essendon absolutely swamped North

Melbourne. who showed a reversal oftheir previous week's form. when theybeat Carlton.Essendon are favourites for the 1946

title and a repetition of last Saturday'sform in the finals will make the goingve.ry tough fOl' their opponents.Carlton are not very impressive at the

moment and only through st. Kilda's in-accuracy at the goal-front last Saturday.die! victo!'y go to the Blues. The final four is still in doubt and

three teams, Melbourne. Richmond andCa!.lton. are staging a great struggle forthe coveted fourth position. l\Ielbourne

ITEMS OF INTEHEST.---::---

(By Aub. Reed.)

Rugby League players and supportersenjoyed the brilliant, non-stop, scrumlessb~d of football so much in the recentPerth-New South Wales game that theycame back for another helping ofAustralia's National Code of football lastSunday. It is amazing th\; number of.Sydney people who have' never seenAustraliAn Rules football played. Surelyone should have a l{X)k at their owncountry's Nation.al game.

*Keith Miller. Australian XI cricketer,.St. Kilda and Victorian representativefootballer, played his last game for this.season last Saturday a~illst Carlton..Miller, a brilliant all-round footballer.will sail for America next Saturday.",-here he is to be mar.ried. He hopesto return to Australia in time for the.opening of the cricket season.

*A crowd of tW,OOO saw' Western Aus-

tralia beat South AusU:;lia at SubiacoOval last Saturday in a 'thrilling game.Fortunes fluctuated through;;:;tthe game, each team taking the lead in turn. Withless than five minutes remaining forplay. South Australia were in front, butin a lightning fmish, Western Australiakicked two quick goals to snatch victoryin a great game. The final scores were:-W.A., 20-11 (137), ibeat SA, 19-11 (125).

*Alec. Pender, who played with New-

town while attached to the ~ervices lastyear. was chosen to play for SouthAustralia's second eighteen againstBroken Hill last Saturday. South Aus-tralia defeated Broken Hill. 9 goals, 12behinds (66), to 8-11 (59)' Pender, whoplays with Port Adelaide, has kicked 31gcals this season. He is second rovel' tothe S::>uth Australian skippe.1". BobQu:nn. who is the States best rO\'el'.

SOUTH SYDNEY.

Defeat at the hands of -Easts in bothgrades last week did not enhance ourprospects of making the four in eachgrade, but we still have a good chance;providing we win both matches to-day.After holding a slight lead at half-

time, OU1' boys, like the old soldier, justsimply faded away. They are anythingbut consistent, finishing strongly one day. and. fading away ..the next.

Best players were Frank Felstead,Jack Sadler, Ron Matthews, Geoff Len-drum and Nonn Meyc;-. Norm,. in par-ticular, was' like an elusive eel 'and.showed uncanny anticipation.J. Baker and J. Chamberlain, of the

under 18 Junior Team, played with theReserves and displayed very good fornl,ChamberlaJn sCOring two - ruce goals.Several of our players are on the in-

jured list. F. Gascoigne has missed ourlast two matches due to an ankle injury;Ron Kyle stood down last week alsobecause of an ankle injury and RonNeale had to leave the field last weekwith an injured hip. We hope all theseplayers are available for our vital matchto-day.Supporters are agai~' reminded' that the

Annual Ball will !be held at CoronationHall, Mascot, on 28th September, 1946.Tickets are 8/-, including ta..'C.

Jack Evers, former Newtown player,is having a great season with NorthShore. He has kicked 56 goals and isonly five behind Des. Donkin, St.George's. crack goal-kicker. Evers is avery good mark and kicks well. This ishis first season with North Shore.

*One of the most improved South Syd-ney players is Jackie Sadler, a productof junior football. Playing againstEastern Suburbs last Sunday, Sadlel'took some excellent marks and battledvery hard while playing in the ruck.

EASTEHN SUBURBS.

(B~' Norm. Ferguson.)

For the second time in two weeks wewere successful against .Souths, andalthough the Red and Greens lookedlike winning at half-time, the heavyscoring by Easts in the third quarter, putthe issue beyond doubt. Vic. McGuin-ness showed very much improved formwhen .he returned to the 'full-wck posi-lion and w~' one ~f the best playersafield, winning East's weekly award .Roy ..Hayes also performed yeoman ser-vice in the ruck and on the back line, while Freddy Edwards gave one of hisbest displays in the rover's position. The goal kicked by Darcy Coleman fromthe boundary line was a beauty andcaused a'deal of'comment; We hope hecan repeat that feat quite often. This week we meet our most formid-

able opponents-Newtown-and are con-fident of again finishing in front at thefinal bell. Here's hoping, anyhow! The Reserve Grade had another good

win and are now assured of second posi-tion on the list. Pat. Wheel~r age,in

.' .showed good form in jhis game, and.' o'the.rs " pr_om~ent were. Gibbs; Cuneen

and Don McDonald.' ROil. McCannstripped with the Reserves last week andwas a great help to the younger lads .Ron is always eager to play in :my gradeat all and shows the right club spirit. The club is fortunate to number among

its supporters such gentlemen as Mr. A.Gallagher, who very generously donatesthe sum of ten and sixpence to the b€stand fairest player each week. This isindeed a fine gesture fTom a club sup-porter!The club's monthly dance was another

huge success and again we must con-gratulate the Sodal Committee and theirhelpers on' a grand efTort. Preparationsarc now in progress for the club's AnnualBall. which will be held in PuddingtonTown Hall on 9th O~tober-so keep this

A report from John Reed, formerSouth Sydney J'over, now stationed atGriffith, states that the brilliant Perthside that thrilled a big crowd at TrumperPark recently, gave another polisheddisplay to defeat the Combined RiverinaDistricts :by three .goals at the LeetonShowgrounds last Saturday.Play was very even during the til'st

half-the visitors held a narrow lead atquarter time with the scores 4-5 (29), to3-5 (23), and were only 11 points in

.. frorit at half-time, when the scores ~rePerth, 8-8 (56), Riverina, 6-9 (45).Perth increased their lead: in the third

quarter by excellent systematic play, combined with spectacular high-marking .The third quarter ended with the scores,Perth, 11-11 (77), Riverina, 8-11 (59).R. Dr)'berg, Grong Grong's star ruck-

man, was a tower of strength in theRiverina ruck and sent the home sidegoalward, where Murdo~k raised twoflags .Riverina were holding their ov.n in the

last quarter and there was very littlebetween the two teams and furthel' evi-dence of this is the fact that each sidescored 3-1 in this term.
