FACULTY Department Chair Dr. Wilbur F. Stewart retired as department chair on September 1, 1947, having served exactly 31 years in that position. The second chair of the department was Dr. Ralph Bender (BS ‘33, MS ‘41, PhD ‘47). Bender had been a non-resident instructor at the Canal Winchester training school from 1938-1947 DEPARTMENT LOCATIONS 1947-1957 The department was in Campbell Hall until 1948 when the staff moved to 215 Ives Hall. In Ives Hall, the department had a reception center with two secretarial desks and several partitioned cubicles to accommodate a secretary and two staff members. Ives also had a room for the chairman as well as a room for assembling materials. In 1951, the department moved to Rehearsal Hall which provided more space and allowed the department to have private space (except during band rehearsal from 4:00-6:00). Rehearsal Hall provided much more space for the department than the previous locations and had enough space for private staff offices, reception areas, a library, and classroom space. 1947 to 1957 Curriculum Evaluation of Departmental Curriculum In 1952, a General Evaluation Committee was developed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the departmental curriculum. Input was sought from the current student body, graduates of the program, school administrators, the Extension Service, The Soil Conservation Service, the Farm Bureau, Grange and faculty in the College of Agriculture. Subsequent changes resulted in the provision for field experience with the Cooperative Extension Service for one half of the apprentice teaching period. 1950 Eugene Balk teaches students about Campbell Hall Staff 1947-1957: There were two members of staff in 1947 as Hellen Killworth entered her 19 th year with the department.
