1960s Nimbus Sea Ice Extent - Project Basis 1 The recent project to recover Nimbus data is an opportunity to use this 1960s data to create sea ice extent and climate data records (CDRs) for this era. A critical need in climate research is to obtain continuous high quality data records and images as far back in time as is practical for statistical significance. Early Earth-observing satellite data were not fully explored due to the limitations of historical programs and processing systems. Much of the digital data has never been seen, some of the tapes and films are either missing or deteriorating. The original engineers and researchers are now mostly in their 70s and 80s, and time is running out to contact them.

1960s Nimbus Sea Ice Extent - Project Basis

1

• The recent project to recover Nimbus data is an opportunity to use this 1960s data to create sea ice extent and climate data records (CDRs) for this era.

• A critical need in climate research is to obtain continuous high quality data records and images as far back in time as is practical for statistical significance.

• Early Earth-observing satellite data were not fully explored due to the limitations of historical programs and processing systems.

• Much of the digital data has never been seen, some of the tapes and films are either missing or deteriorating.

• The original engineers and researchers are now mostly in their 70s and 80s, and time is running out to contact them.

• Only a portion of the original 6-bit, 7 track tapes have been recovered and none has been converted to modern formats (such as HDF or NetCDF).
