About Our Chapter

Our Mission The 1963/1964 Cadillac Chapter was formed to provide a proactive, inclusive and free club for all 1963 & 1964 Cadillac owners and enthusiasts and to promote social fellowship among club members. We encourage members to maintain, preserve, and restore 1963 & 1964 Cadillacs and to promote the development, collection, publication and exchange of helpful information. A Proactive Club While we will continue to reach out to members through print mail, email and other standard means, our club will be proactive in that we will take advantage of the many technical tools available. Our website at www.6364Cadillac.com hosted by Multiply provides us the ability to post many types of content such as message blogs, videos, photos, calendar events, links, and numerous other types of content. We also have a presence on Facebook with our own page which you will find at www.facebook.com/6364cadillac. From a club or organization standpoint Facebook would make a lousy primary club site due to it's lack of customization (all group pages and personal "walls" look the same) and complete lack of structure, however, with over 1/2 billion members it's an excellent way to make initial contact with other 63/64 owners and enthusiasts and point them toward our Chapter and Website. We already have a wealth of useful information on our website, with many members eager to jump in and help each other and look to build on what we already have to make sharing information and making contact with each other that much easier. Coming from an IT background I have many ideas of how we can utilize some of these and other tools and have to tell you all we are really just getting started. An Inclusive Club We are inclusive in that our chapter is free and open to all 63 & 64 owners and enthusiasts regardless of body style, geographic location or your views on "original", "restored" or "customized" Cadillacs. While we emphasize restoration and preservation of these great cars, we also must understand that one person's definition of original, is another person's definition of restored, and in turn is another person's definition of customized. Other than the requirement that you are a current member of the CLC in good standing, the primary rule we have in our club is respect and civility toward our fellow member. Social Fellowship is a key part of why we form clubs and groups and cannot stress enough that we all bring a different perspective to these cars and that our overall passion for these great cars is our uniting bond.

Director's Message Hello All, It's been a long time coming for our second newsletter but hope to start getting these out on a regular basis. I had hoped to enlist a full time newsletter editor by now but I'll continue to serve as long as needed. Putting them together is actually quite rewarding since it gives you a chance to reflect on the club and focus on our goals and objectives. In this 2nd newsletter I have included much of the formal chapter information at the end for the many new members we have added since the last newsletter. Speaking of new members, our club continues to grow not only in numbers but geographical location. We have recently added new members from The Netherlands, England, and Australia and welcome all of our international members and look to sign up many from "across the pond" in the future. Our current membership is 116 and am pleased that many of the 35 new members we have signed up since our last newsletter are also new CLC members. I always scan through the listing of new members in each month's Self Starter and often find see new 63/64 Cadillac Chapter members listed. We are definitely doing our part to bring in new CLC members and encourage all of you to continue to enlist other 63/64 Cadillac owners and enthusiasts in both the CLC and our chapter. You will see it mentioned elsewhere, but I would love to see 150 members by end of year and think with your help we can reach that goal.

Classics at the Capital Downtown Raleigh, NC

Classics at the Capital Car Show I had originally planned to try and make the Ohio Grand National this year but due to house projects and the fact I really need to get that engine in my 64 Coupe DeVille rebuilt before I make a trip that distance, I was unable to attend this year's event. I do know a few of you made the trip and would love to see pictures and hear about this year's Grand National and encourage all to post pictures and articles on our website or write an article for the next newsletter which I hope to have out in December. I was able to attend the "Classics At the Capital" event downtown Raleigh which brought in 300 to 400 hundred cars. While it is not on par with the Big Shows such as Hershey, Carlisle, Charlotte, etc, it was an impressive site to see all those cars for 6 city blocks between the NC Capital and Memorial Auditorium. This was the 2nd year for this show and it was estimated that twice as many people attended this year as last year. One of the best parts of the event was the Friday night cruise in where they blocked off the main street from 6pm to 11pm and everyone could just cruise in, park and take in live music, food and of course talk cars! The picture on previous page was taken right before 11pm as some of the other cars had left and I had a clear shot of my Caddy with the Capital in the background. If you are active on our website you probably saw some of the Cadillacs and other pictures I posted from the event. I posted one photo album of only Cadillacs and a 1940 LaSalle. You can see that photo album by Clicking Here. I also posted a photo album of the "other" cars you can see by Clicking Here. In Conclusion... The plan going forward is to publish a newsletter every quarter with the next one coming out in December. If you have stories and articles you would like to submit please don't be shy. We have an excellent article by John Serfling Director of the Rocky Mountain Region of the CLC (RMRCLC) who is featured this week as our Member Cadillac Spotlight. This gorgeous picture which you will also in the article was taken at Monument Valley. Thanks to John for submitting this wonderful article and look forward to other member articles in the future.

John Serfling's Cadillac Story This photograph of me driving my 1963 Series 62 convertible was taken on the way to the 2009 Grand National in Las Vegas, NV. I was near the summit of Vail Pass on I-70 in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. The elevation there is 10,600 feet! The car still had plenty of power, even with 40% less oxygen available for combustion than there is at sea level. I have been the Director of the Rocky Mountain Region of the CLC (RMRCLC) for the past four years. As such I must write a one page column for our monthly newsletter, the Dagmar. Shortly after I took office I started including a paragraph or two in my column about the work I had done on my cars during the previous month. At first this was just to fill up space, because I didn’t know what else to write about. Since I’m not nearly the mechanic that Jason Edge is, I attempted to employ self-deprecating humor in my stories. I figured it is better to laugh at yourself, than it is to give others the ammunition they need to laugh at you. At the 2008 Grand National a member from Chicago told me that he really enjoyed reading my stories. As an officer in his club, he received a copy of our newsletter every month. I was surprised and please to have that kind of feedback. Here is a compilation of stories about my ’63 convertible that I have included in the Dagmar. Any names that are included are fellow members of the RMRCLC. June 08 The bad news for me is that my convertible made me sick. We took it out for a drive on a lovely Monday night in late May. We headed east from downtown and ended up in the Lowry redevelopment. I parked where we could see the lovely, full moon, fairly low on the horizon. I now cough my fool head off, mostly at night and I can’t breath. Damn pollen! My allergist, who is an old Corvette guy tells me I have to rinse my sinuses after every ride. If only I had known that a week ago. I am so miserable, I can’t even drive in the Memorial Day Parade, which I really enjoy attending. Hopefully, I’ll be all better by the time I see you at the next meeting. ...continued next page.......

continued..... July 08 You will be happy to know that there are no sad tales of woe for me to tell you about working on my cars this month. There is only success. I was tired of the gas gage operation in my ’63 convertible, so I decided to install a new sending unit. Wisely using the floor jack to support the tank when I unbolted its straps, I successfully removed it, took it to Spike’s Radiator for a cleaning and reinstalled it, without any serious difficulties. I did replace the J bolts at TJ’s suggestion. I doubt that I could have made the old ones work on the reinstall. The nuts were extremely difficult to turn, even after using “Fabulous” PB Blaster. The new ones were a piece of cake to install. May 09 One of the main benefits of membership in our club is that fellow members are available to help solve problems. Tom Orton and I just spent some time working on the convertible a couple of days ago. We pulled the left rear brake drum off, since I was finally able to tell that only the left rear brake was sticking. All winter I’ve been trying to think of probable causes for the brakes sticking. Was it the master cylinder? Could it be one or more wheel cylinders? Is brake fluid leaking onto the shoes? I think we finally figured out what was wrong and fixed it. When I first took the brakes apart a week ago, after checking the master cylinder and not finding anything wrong, there wasn’t any sign of the wheel cylinder leaking, but there was some strange, black, stringy stuff on the springs, on the shoes and on the drum. It was not brake fluid, however. While Tom and I were cleaning the mysterious crud from the shoes and drum, a neighbor who works on old Volkswagens, happened to come by. He thinks that the crud was a mixture of brake dust and differential oil. The oil level was down about ¼”, so this is plausible. Tom suspects that I parked the car with the left side down the hill from the right side at some time last summer, which allowed differential oil to get out of the axle housing. That means a bad seal, but probably not bad enough to cause other problems, except when the car is tipped. After cleaning up the shoes and drum, the car stops like it is supposed to. Life seems to be good again. Aug 09 What a month it has been for this would be mechanic. On the trip home from Las Vegas, my ’63 convertible experienced vapor lock for the first time since I have owned it. First on the to-do list was to install an auxiliary, electric fuel pump near the gas tank. Since being installed, I have experience vapor lock three times. Turning on the switch to the pump at the first sign of a problem has kept the car running very well. Isn’t it nice when something works out nicely? As soon as that project was completed I raised the rear end of my ’70 Eldorado to try to figure out why the air shocks weren’t maintaining pressure, hoping for a hole in one of the lines. Sadly, I saw oily bubbles coming from one of the shocks, which is only two years old. It has a five year guarantee. I removed both shocks and took them back from whence they cometh. They have been rebuilt and are on their way back to me. Next I decided to try to find replacement vacuum tubes for the Guide-matic system. At John Washburn’s car clinic in early June I had ascertained that one of the tubes no longer works. My searching on Google got me no where. Paul Olson casually mentioned a search parameter I hadn’t thought of and immediately I found NOS tubes matching both of mine. They are on order now. I knew that when you turn the system off, the foot switch operates more or less like a normal bright/dim switch. What I didn’t realize was that even with the system off, after removing the tubes, the headlights no longer go to bright. It doesn’t matter if the tubes work or not, they just have to be in place. Isn’t that interesting? ....continued on next page....

Sept 09 I received a letter in the mail from the State of Colorado with a lovely picture of the back end of my ’63 convertible. At the time the photo was taken, I was driving past a mobile emissions station, which is set up almost every day where you turn west from north bound I-25 to west bound I-70. The letter indicated that I was one of the excessive polluters in the metro Denver area and that I must bring the car in for a thorough exam. How could this be? It had only been two years since I had had the carburetor worked on and CO and HC levels measured as OK. Well, they aren’t OK any more. Prior to taking the car in I fiddled with the idle mixture and re-timed the car. It now idles significantly slower (where it is suppose to) and, since the timing was off about 5º, the car runs better. With great fear and trepidation about how much I would have to spend to get the car running legally, I appeared at the emissions test center at the appointed hour. You don’t get to witness the test, so I waited impatiently for the results. Low and behold, the car passed. When the tester told me it had passed he added that it wasn’t pretty. Hydrocarbons were in the high 900’s (1000 is the limit) and CO was at 7.5% (I think 9% is the limit). He suggested that the results indicated carburetor work would be in order. So now I have my winter project for the car. Oct 09 Speaking of my convertible, I really enjoyed it this summer. We took it to dinner at El Rancho a few times, drove up US 40 to Genesee Park many times and of course took it to the Grand National in Las Vegas. It has performed very well all summer long, but I’m afraid I may have the pleasure of replacing the water pump and front seal this winter. A few days ago I noticed a little water mixed with oil on the driveway floor. That is never a good sign. I just hope I can get through the Fall Color Tour without a problem. I’ll let you know next month. March 11 I took my ’63 convertible out of the garage one of the warm days in February. I didn’t think it was quite warm enough to put the top down, but there wasn’t any snow or ice on the road, so I figured this was as good of a day as I would have to run the car and charge up the battery. I must have done this around Ground Hog day, since it looks like we will have at least six more weeks of winter before I can do it again. I even dusted off the car while it warmed up. That approved its appearance fairly dramatically.

Chapter Shirts, Jackets and Other Club Merchandise

We have made some progress in looking for shirts, jackets, caps and other merchandise for the club and hope to have these items available to the members in the not too distant future. Gary Westfall has put in a lot of up front effort in researching sources and working with our logo and designs to determine what we want for the club. We had a source for shirts, etc lined up and purchased a couple shirts and a jacket, but determined that we really need to go with a screen printing application and not an iron on, and the company wasn't responsive to feedback and we have moved on to another source that is local to me. The company is PKD Screen Printing and is owned by friend of mine Paulette Disbrow. Paulette produced all of the thousands of Scotty McCreery shirts here in Garner, NC as Scotty was winning on American Idol each week. I will be working with Paulette in the coming weeks and am optimistic that she can deliver quality affordable shirts we can all be proud to wear. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress and will definitely let everyone know via email and on the website once we have items available for purchase. Again, thanks for Gary's efforts and hanging in there with me on this sometimes tedious back and forth effort. Speaking of Gary, one of the by products of determining what we can do with shirts and embroidery, he created a really cool looking CadPrint logo. He has them for sale and make a great display for car events, car shows, and the garage. You an check them out by Clicking Here.

The following information was copied from the CLCMRC site listed above. The Plan In February 2010, after researching more than 100 potential sites for its museum and research center, the CLCMRC board unanimously selected the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan, as the home for its new facility. The Gilmore is on 90 scenic acres located northeast of Kalamazoo just off I-94, midway between Chicago and Detroit. Currently, it hosts more than 50,000 visitors annually, from May through October. However, with the planned investment of more than $10 million in new and upgraded amenities, including a new, 23,000-square-foot Automotive Heritage Center, visitors will soon be able to enjoy the Gilmore collection, historic facilities, archives and exhibits year-round. Gilmore has been home to the Classic Car Club of America Museum and archives for many years. A more recent partner is the Pierce-Arrow Club and its museum building. The Franklin Automobile Club completed the construction of a new 6,750-square-foot facility to showcase its collection in May 2010. In addition, both the Lincoln Foundation and the Model A Ford Club of America have announced plans to construct new facilities on the Gilmore campus. Permanent Location The exciting plan to locate the Cadillac-LaSalle Club Museum and Research Center at Gilmore is being implemented in two steps. First, the CLCMRC car collection was moved from storage facilities and is now showcased as the Cadillac Gallery in the Carriage House on the Gilmore grounds. The greater visibility and accessibility of the collection in the Cadillac Gallery already has enhanced awareness of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club Museum and Research Center and also is building the foundation for the establishment of its permanent home at Gilmore. Goal: $2 million is needed to fund the new Research Museum. Click Here to find out how you can contribute.

Chapter Updates Chapter Status Our chapter was approved in July 2011 at the CLC Board Meeting and remain a provisional chapter in good standing and will remain so until we are approved for Full Chapter Status by the CLC Board. Part of the requirement is to publish a periodic newsletter and to distribute it to the president, executive vice president, director for publications and national membership secretary. This and future newsletters will fulfill that requirement. I am also required to periodically provide the chapter roster to the CLC Board which I have as requested. Chapter Membership

• MEMBERSHIP: Our current membership is 116. After a fast start last summer we have continued to steadily add new members. I would like to set a goal of 150 members by the end of this year. We have made a fast start with our new chapter but we have a lot of potential for growth.

• WEBSITE : Our 63/64 Cadillac Website (www.6364cadillac.com) has 444 members, which is exactly 100 more than the 344 we had when the December newsletter went out. As you see we have a huge potential for new CLC and Chapter members at the website which is hosted by the 63/64 Cadillac Chapter.

• FACEBOOK PAGE: Facebook is another important marketing tool and we maintain a Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/6364cadillac that points anyone interested in 63 & 64 Cadillacs back to our main website. We currently have 523 Facebook users that "Like" our page and get updates when anything is posted to that site.

Chapter Organization According to the Chapter Guidelines "Chapters may have as many or as few officers, boards and committees as serve the needs of the chapter. Titles of the officers are at the chapter's discretion.". Currently we have me as Director and 3 officers, Gary Westfall, Alex Figueroa, and Jeff Kinzler with Gary also serving as Merchandising Coordinator. There other positions that need filling in the club which I have listed on the next page. Note that other than removing merchandising coordinator these are the same positions we listed in December...so if you have time and expertise to fill one of these roles please step forward!

Chapter Positions Needed

From past experience in this area I know I need to be up front and even blunt and to the point with everyone. Having a person in these positions for namesake only does not serve the needs of the chapter. Filling these positions takes time and commitment on the part of those filling it. There is no getting around it. On the other hand these roles can be very fulfilling and rewarding. If you are really into what you are doing it becomes a labor of love and something that can bring much enjoyment. For example I have really enjoyed writing our first newsletter and look forward to the next one now! Believe me from someone that has a full time job, part time business, many projects around our old house, I fully understand that some of you don't have the time. If you have some time and skills to fill these positions please contact me and let me know you are interested. Newsletter Editor This is one of those areas that demands both time and skills. It takes time to put the newsletters together and it takes a certain skill level for creating the document itself. For example I feel I have intermediate skill with working with Microsoft Word. I'm not a novice but not a pro either. This position needs someone creative enough to put the newsletter together and possessing at least intermediate technical skills. For example if you go through this newsletter and say "I can do that" or "I can do that better" and have the time and inclination to step up as Newsletter Editor, or even Assistant Newsletter Editor, please let me know you are interested. Keep in mind there is also an annual Newsletter Award giving out at the Grand Nationals, and would love to see our chapter reach that level some day. Assistant Webmaster This is another area where specific skills and creativity are needed. Coming from an IT background and having intermediate PC and webs skills, I will continue as Webmaster for the foreseeable future, however, I would gladly hand over this role to someone qualified. With an assistant webmaster we need someone that at a minimum understands basic website design concepts. An understanding of basic HTML coding is a plus since our host site Multiply allows html coding to customize our site. This role also requires a bit of creativity in terms of constant improvement of our main website and others areas where we have a presence such as Facebook. Core programming with Java, etc, is not needed but again basic web design concepts and the willingness to jump in and see how Multiply works and see how we can improve our site is a must. Activities Coordinator We need someone to keep on top of national events and activities that our members might be interested in attending and in keeping everyone informed both on the website and via email. They would basically serve as both point person for obtaining and posting information and making sure everything is handled in terms of Chapter attended events.

Focus Forward Website Tech Talk! About our Website As more and more people connect, socialize and share their lives online, the internet is a very powerful tool for our Chapter. As a chapter with members spread out all over geographically the website serves as a powerful tool in terms of the development, collection, publication and exchange of helpful information which is part of our mission statement. It also allows us to develop social fellowship among members by providing that immediate online contact with each other. It can never replace meet-ups, car shows, and in person interaction with each other, however, it also makes possible things unheard of just a few years ago. We will use our 'Focus Forward' segment to discuss some of the 'techy' things we can do to help promote our club and enlist more members. Join our Website If you have not joined our website, go to the home page at www.6364Cadillac.com and click on Join this Group' in upper right and corner of the page. If you have problems signing up send me an email to [email protected]. Also be sure and check out all the content on the website. I think you will find a lot of useful information. For example we have posted the complete 1963 and 1964 Serviceman and part of the 62 Serviceman Bulletins. Help For Using Our Website Over the past few weeks there has been some excellent discussion about how to post message, pictures, etc and have started creating new screen shots of how to do some of the basic things such as posting new messages on our website. You can see these screen shot on the website by Clicking Here. You will also find other useful in formation on the home page in the 'Help Notes for Multiply' content box over on the left below the Welcome box. Going future I will continue to create help notes and post information that will make using our website easy. Once you get the hang of Multiply, posting content of any type whether it is message blogs, pictures, videos, links, market listings, calendar events is very similar and quite easy. Just remember you have to be a member of the site to post new content. Facebook Presence With 750 million Facebook users you cannot deny it's a powerful tool for making contact with fellow 63/64 Cadillac owners and enthusiasts and we maintain a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/6364cadillac There are many things about Facebook I'm really not a big fan of and is the very reason we use Multiply for our main website, but instead of grumbling about what I don't like about it, I'm going to definitely push to make our presence known and use it to make that initial contact with those that might not be aware of our 63/64 Cadillac Chapter. If you are a "Facebooker" please check out the link and "like" our Page.

GUIDELINES FOR CHARTERED CHAPTERS

1. Name and Purpose

Name - All chartered chapters shall be known and do business as The_1963/1964 Chapter, Cadillac-LaSalle Club, Inc.

Purpose - National members of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club, Inc. with an interest in a particular model or type of Cadillac or LaSalle are encouraged to form affinity groups in furtherance of club purposes as stated in the national constitution, "for the development, publication and exchange of information pertaining to recognized Cadillacs and LaSalles; to encourage the maintenance, preservation and restoration of all recognized Cadillacs and LaSalles; to maintain references on recognized Cadillacs and LaSalles; and to promote social fellowship among Club members."

2. Formation of a Chapter

Charter Members - Any group of ten or more active club members may submit an application to form a provisional chapter of the club. Non-members may be included in the group if they simultaneously submit applications to become national members.

Application Forms - The forms needed to apply for provisional status are available from and to be submitted to the CLC executive vice-president.

Board Consideration - Applications to form a provisional chapter will be considered by the board of directors at its first regular meeting after receipt of the application. New chapters shall remain provisional for a minimum of one year before the board of directors may consider a written application for full chapter status.

Full Charter Status - At each of its meetings, the board of directors receives reports and reviews the activity of chartered chapters. Favorable consideration of a provisional chapter application for full charter status will be based upon demonstrated activity to include: financial solvency, membership growth or stability, events and meetings held, communications among its members, etc.

Time Limit - If in a period of three years a provisional chapter has not demonstrated the activity level required to become a full charter chapter, the board of directors may, at its option, revoke provisional chapter status.

Primacy of Cadillac-LaSalle Club, Inc. - Upon receiving a charter granted by the national board of directors, the chapter agrees to operate under and abide by the club constitution and bylaws.

3. Basic Structure and Operation of a Chapter Structure - Chapters may incorporate but are not required to do so by the national club. The advice of counsel is recommended to assess the merits of incorporation. Chapters are not required to have a written constitution and bylaws. The adoption, however, of one or both is recommended in order to provide a formal structure for conducting the business of the chapter. Sample constitutions/bylaws may be found in section 16.7 of the club policy manual. In cases of conflict, the national constitution and bylaws (published in each edition of the Directory) shall take precedence over chapter constitutions/bylaws. (Until we create our own constitution and bylaws we will abide by the National CLC constitution and bylaws.)

Officers - Chapters may have as many or as few officers, boards and committees as serve the needs of the chapter. Titles of the officers are at the chapter's discretion. The national club considers the head of each chapter to be the "chapter director" and will use that title in correspondence to the directors and/or chapter members.

Membership - AD members of a chapter must be members the national club. If an individual ceases to be a member of the national club, he/she shall automatically cease to be a member of the chapter.

Dues - Dues of the chapter are in addition to national club dues and are set by the chapter. They are invoiced by, payable to and collected by the chapter. (our Chapter has no dues)

Minimum Standards to Maintain a Chapter Charter - The board of directors has established the following minimum standards to maintain a chapter charter:

1. Maintain a membership of at least ten (10) members. (we currently have 116 members) 2. Publish a periodic newsletter (no specified frequency - may be electronic) (our plan is to publish quarterly) 3. Distribute the chapter newsletter to the president, executive vice president,

director for publications and national membership secretary. 4. Submit a chapter membership roster annually to the national Failure to maintain the minimum standards will result in reversion to provisional chapter status. The affected chapter may subsequently choose to appear before the board to show why provisional status should not be revoked.

Insurance - The national club maintains a Commercial General Liability and Non-owned Automobile Liability Policy, which insures the national club, its regions, chapters and members, directors and officers thereof, while participating in club sponsored events. A clear benefit of publishing a regular newsletter is to be able to establish a function as a club sponsored event. Proof of insurance is available from the insurance agency, J.C. TAYLOR, Inc., if needed by a chapter in connection with its activities.
