INTRODUCTION

This report summarizes releases of radioactive waste to the

Total quantities of radioactive waste released from plant environs of the Savannah River Plant during the calendar year 1969. startup through 1969 are also reported. Accuracy is not always implied to the degree indicated by the number of significant figures reported. Values were not rounded off, since data will be used in future cumulative summaries. No explanations are given for unusual releases; this information may be found in the Radiological Sciences Division Monthly Reports and in the Semi- annual and Annual Environmental Monitoring Reports for 1969.

SUMMARY

Total quantities of radioactive waste released from the Savannah River Plant t o the atmosphere, to effluent streams, and to earthen seepage basins during 1969 and during the 16-year period from plant startup through 1969 are presented in the following table. total quantities are listed in Table I in the Appendix.

Estimated quantities of fission products in underground storage tanks, as of December 20, 1969 totaled 464 megacuries in F Area and 335 megacuries in H Area (data provided by Separations Technology Section).

RELEASES TO THE ATMOSPHERE

Separations Areas

The quantities of radioactivity released from separations areas stacks during 1969 are presented in the following table. F- and H-Area chemical separations plant releases include specific radionuclide distribution, as determined by gamma spectrometry and radiochemical analyses; radioisotopes of the noble gases were estimated. separations areas stacks (except noble gases) is presented in Table I 1 in the Appendix.

The monthly distribution of radionuclides released from

Stack-released radioactivity from Building 235-F, a special facility which began operation in February 1961, was very low (0.1 mCi of nonvolatile beta and 12.4 pCi of alpha).

Reactor Areas

Nonvolatile beta radioactivity that came from the stack exhaust systems of the reactor buildings during 1969 Consisted primarily of atmospheric fission product fallout (from nuclear weapons tests), which had been drawn into the ventilation systems, Quantities of other radioisotopes, identified by gamma spectrometry, were too low to permit accurate specific analyses. Alpha releases from reactor area stacks were negligible. lived argon-41 produced by neutron activation of atmospheric argon were not calculated routinely.
