1970s
How did Audiences Consume Music ? Audiences used to listen to music
through radio, tapes and even live concerts.
There was no one breaking copyrights and passing along music for free
They normally went to the shops and bought the vinyl records
Which artists were popular?
Bob Dylan
Elton John
The Rolling Stones
Which genres were popular? Disco & dance music were one of the
biggest genres of the decade, especially in the mid to late 1970s.
Funk & Soul, punk rock, Progressive Rock remained popular throughout the decade.
Why were they popular? The movie Saturday Night Fever
featuring the music of the Bee Gees had the effect of setting off disco mania in the United States.

Night Fever became the best-selling album of all time until 1983 when Michael Jackson's Thriller broke that record.
How were new artists found and developed?
An A&R guy would listen to some recordings and see the band at some gigs.
If the artists impressed the A&R guy, he would bring the recordings and a report of the gigs to the label.
Who would make a decision on signing.
How was music marketed? The artists gigs being advertised in
newspapers.
The band would play live on music programs.
Also touring was a primary means of
promotion
How was music distributed?
After a master tape is created.
Dubs from the master would be sent to pressing plants around the world.
They would be pressed into vinyl at these pressing plants, and then distributed from there to record stores.
How did institutions make money?
Labels also made money on publishing rights.
However many foolishly or naively sold away their publishing rights.
This was a mistake that cost many people millions.
2000s
How did Audiences Consume Music ? Software such as Spotify and Itunes
are used.
Youtube allows Audiences to access a wide range of music from different genres.

What genre was popular
The rise of Hip-Hop Hip hop dominated popular music in the
early 2000s. Artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, OutKast,
The Black Eyed Peas were among the dominant mainstream hip hop artists to have represented the Hip hop genre for the decade.
Distinct regional differences also developed outside of the hip hop/rap.
How were new artists found and developed? A talent scout would listen to some
recordings If the Artist impressed the talent scout then
they will be passed onto the record label who would make a decision on signing. Also artist can be scouted from the internet. There was also talent shows that people
could audition for e.g. Cheryl Cole auditioned for Popstars The rival
How was music marketed? Some Artists give away free mix tapes.

How was music distributed? Rise of computers became the primary
means to record, distribute, store, and play music which caused widespread economic changes in the music industry.
The iPod and iTunes system became immensely popular, and many consumers began to transfer their physical recording media (such as CDs) onto computer hard drives.
