DEDICA TION

Each year students join _different activities and spend a lot of devoted time doing their share of the work. In every activity there are devoted advisors who often spend much of their time helping and guiding. The members of the Salmagundi staff feel there is no one in the entire school who devotes as much of their time after school and on weekends as Mrs. Kilroy.

Words can not express how grateful we editors are to the friendly, warm, cheery, and smiling Mrs. Kilroy who seems to be always willing to put up with us. The only way one can ever realize how helpful she is, is by belonging to the Salmagundi and working with her all the time. Mrs. Kilroy has also spent much time teaching young businessmen and women how to prepare themselves, for the future.

We're sure there is not a student in Keene High School that Mrs. Kilroy does not have a friendly smile for. Because of all these wonderful things we feel there is not a person in this school who deserves a dedication more than our own advisor, Mrs. Kilroy.

Salmagundi realizes that all our faculty members are dedicated, hard working, teach-ers, and we appreciate this fact.

In this year's book we wish to give special attention to Miss Drugg, She has spent many years helping students acquire knowledge and experience in the field of science. Her contributions to the excellent reputation which Keerie High School holds as its own commands this special recognition.

Keene High School is losing a good friend and teacher with her retirement. We wish her many happy years in her new home in Florida.

THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS

To the Class of 1971: The close of another year has arrived and it is now time to make our fond fare-

wells, to count our laurels, and bid our school adieu. It has indeed been a year that we shall remember for a long time to come. No

other class had the love, the admiration, for our school, and for each other that we had. If there was one factor that made it so, it was the fact that we lived our lives day to day. We did not linger on the past or preoccupy ourselves with the future. Nor could we have, for the past is but a memory, the future but a dream. We can not love or hope yesterday; we can not laugh or cry tomorrow; we can live only today, and it is because we, the Class of 1971, have lived today we can look forward to a more promising tomorrow.

To all of you I extend my thanks and gratitude for making my Senior year at Keene High a most unforgettable one.

The Seniors stayed late wrapping the gifts with much joy, Hoping each little child would enjoy his toy. To the Class of Nineteen Seventy-One:

My name is Dave Delaney. I'm a student at Keene High School and I would like to tell everyone about the special work study program here at Keene High. It's a real great program.

Mr. Ellum is quite a teacher. He teaches us all about jobs-so that some day we may go out and get our own jobs and live in society. The kids go to work a half day. They try one kind of job until January, then they try another one until the end of school. It's a great experience for every one of us kids and I only wish that everyone at Keene High could try this.

Mr. Ellum has only been here two years but is something else. I would like to thank him for everything he has done for me and the rest of the kids in the class.

The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior boys who comprise the Key Club are people who are willing to give many hours of un-selfish service to others.

The types of projects undertaken and accomplished for the benefit of our school and community are numerous and diversi-fied. To illustrate-the members assisted with the Blood Mobile, and with the organization of W.H.O., Inc; they assist at football games and they instigated Spirit Week at schpol. Each year they treat the advisors, coaches, and other leaders to a banquet, and each year spend time cleaning and beautifying the school grounds.

The Keene High Debate Club, composed of many active members, participates in several debates as well as tournaments. It is the only non-athletic organization in the school which competes interscholastically. The Pres-ident of the club this year was Dick Knight who led a group of fine debaters. They had a most successful sea-son. Coached by Mr. Butler, the club profited from his experience, knowledge, and instruction.

Junior Achievement is a nationwide organization which offers the high school student the information, prac-tice, and background needed for understanding the American free enterprise system.

Sponsored by local businesses, the students form and run miniature corporations, familiarizing themselves with dividends, stocks, and commissions.

BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE

The Girls' and Boys' State programs sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, offer a number of deserving Juniors an opportunity to learn about our state government. During the summer the chosen Juniors spend a week at U.N.H. hearing various guest speakers and par-ticipating in political rallies. They have elections of officers, and passing of legislation.

The students run their own systems of government compiled of political parties, house of congress, a governor and council, and a court.

K.H.S. A CAPPELLA CHOIR

The K.H.S. A Cappella Choir is regarded as one of the out-standing vocal groups in New England. It's repertoire in-cludes complicated compositions, contemporary music, as well as "show tunes". Each year the Choir participates in an ex-change concert with an out-of-state high school choral group. THE MARCHING BAND

Many hours of practice are required to produce band music such as our High School Band gives forth for the enjoyme'nt of the school and the community. The band members are generous with their time and music and are seen and heard at assemblies, rallies, games, and parades. They participate in exchange concerts each year.

The Pep Club is made up of students who work to encourage school spirit by spending time making posters to place around the school, sponsoring buses for games away from Keene, and selling high school banners. This group plays an important part in encouraging participants in interscholastic sports as well as spectators.

The Ski Club was originated to help establish a Ski Team. However, there was still enough interest at the beginning of this year to retain the club.

A three day ski trip was planned for February vacation only to be cancelled due to difficulties in arranging transporta-tion.

The girls' varsity team also had a new coach and a fine season. Although the record showed six wins and six losses, most of the defeats were close.

The team had a hard time on its home court, but win or lose, the girls kept up their spirit. The girls were tough and prove it they did. For the seniors, it was their last game — what a season to remember.

The girls' junior varsity basketball team had a fine season this year losing only two games. Both defeats came at the hands of Fall Mt.

The girls put in long hours of hard work and practice for a great new coach to make the season so successful. As the junior varsity team is all underclassmen, the upcoming teams should be very strong and look forward to many bright victories.

The Junior Varsity produced another winning season by winning seven and losing only five. One highlight was after being beaten by Nashua 11 — 0, they came back to take a 2 — 1 decision over the Purple Panthers.

The Freshman team had the best season in many years. Losing only three of their fifteen games. By winning ten games in a row they had the longest winning streak in Freshman baseball history.

This year's football team was comprised of individuals who showed pride, determination, and desire to accomplish a spectacular season. The team possessed a certain characteristic that proved vital-unity. All worked for a goal that they wanted. They accomplished this goal, Co-champions of the State. The team took pride in having five members of the squad make all-state. They were: Lindsey Borden, John Bressett, Gary Dubois, Dave Forest, and John Trubino. There were also some other important senior members of the squad. They were: N. Bleau, S. Burns, T. O'Neal, and P. Roy. The man who played the key position is a remarkable person, Coach Mike Ginolfi.

This years' team got off to an extremely slow start, but really jelled in the second half of the Brat-tleboro game. From that point on till the climax of the season, when they defeated the Sophomores in a challenge game, they gave up only 18 points while scoring 78.

The Keene High Basketball team worked exceedingly hard this yeaf and earned the opportunity to participate in the Christmas Tourney for the first time in many years. At the Tourney they defeated Trinity and Manchester West. They lost to Memorial — 64 to 67. They ended the scheduled season ten and nine. The Golf team had another fine season and since none of the players graduated, there seems to be great prospects in store as this book goes to press.

The Keene Tennis team posted a five and five season, defeating Stevens, Monad-nock, Thomas More, and Bellows Tails twice. The tennis team's number one player, Harry Frechette, graduated, but all the rest of the team remains and we hope they will all be on the team this coming season.

CROSS COUNTRY

Despite the loss of Dave Goldsmith, this year's Cross Country team turned in a fine 5 and 2 season. During the regular season Dual Meet's they lost only to Concord and Wachusett. The team placed third in the Monadnock Invitationals and a Quadrangular meet with Concord, Brady, and Bellows Falls. At the state meet Keene competed with 14 other schools and finished second.

This year's track team lost only to Fitchburg and Nashua while winning the rest of their eight meets. Captain Dave Goldsmith, Gerry Dee, and John Trubiano qualified for the New England Championships. Dave qualified in the mile and placed third at the Championships by running a 4 min. 22 sec. mile. Gerry qualified for the meet by running a 2 min. 7 sec. half mile and John qualified in the 220 yard dash. The team placed second in the Class L Championships and third in the meet on Champions. The Ski Team is the newest team at Keene High and one of the most successful teams of this year. They lost only to Concord in regular season meets and placed 'sixth out of fourteen in the Championship meet at Wildcat and Berlin. Next year's team will have to work very hard to retain the respect on the slopes that this year's team earned.

From September to June of each year every school has its own special leaders who are friends and helpers to each student. The students of Keene High School feel lucky and proud to have leaders like Mr. Burns, Mr. Boucher and Mr. Seaver.

Many times these three are seen offering their help to students; they are ever ready to assist when problems arise.

The way the world is changing today it takes a per-son of great courage, determination, and patience to be willing to help and understand the youth.

It is a familiar sight to see Mr. Seaver working late trying to straighten out a problem; Mr. Boucher talking out problems with a student; Mr. Burns taking time out to help put up a ladder to hang a poster.

When three men are willing to give their time, help and encouragement to 1,650 kids so that they may face the world better prepared than previous generations, we of Salmagundi staff feel they deserve a great deal of af-fection and gratitude from each and every student of Keene High School.

With the aid of our capable and efficient guid-ance counselors, many students are able to decide which program of study to follow, as well as gaining much information on colleges. This lat-ter is especially possible through the use of the guidance department reading room, which con-tains catalogues of many of the colleges which in-terest the students. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Keene High School has a very advanced

and highly developed course of study in the sciences. From earth science to chemistry, the students are taught by capable teachers, with laboratory work to aid in teaching. Experiments, movies, and work in the greenhouse make the Keene High Science Department different from any other.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT The Social Studies Department attempts through its program to

present a viable picture of the world in which we live. Required courses deal primarily with the study of Western Man and the growth and development of modern America. Electives, both exist-ing and proposed, offer the student opportunities to pursue study in such areas as: Government, Afro-American studies, World Affairs, Non-Western Cultures, World Geography, Consumer Economics and the behavioral sciences of Psychology and Sociology.

Our curriculum will have been successful if our students are pre-pared to: think for themselves, understand their world, and be effec-tive individuals in whatever they choose for a lifetime endeavor.

HUMANITIES HUMANITIES is an exploration of the state-

ments that creative and inquiring men have made about their relation to their gods, to themselves, to other men, to nature, to the state, and to the cumula-tive historical consciousness which has made us what we are.

In the fall of 1969, staff members from several de-partments including English, Social Studies, Music, Art, Audio-Visual, and the administration, began a series of meetings to devise a course which would provide students an opportunity for examining their lives and society. From these meetings came the gen-eral goals of the HUMANITIES PROGRAM and the decision to locate this course in the 12th grade for non-college oriented students. Much of the work of this committee provided a basis for the summer writing project which structured and developed this guide for the HUMANITIES COURSE.

As the school year ended in 1970, thirteen staff members from the various departments mentioned previously met to spend six weeks in intensive work on the HUMANITIES PROGRAM. The result of this team's effort is this HUMANITIES COURSE which stresses a student-centered, inquiry oriented and interdisciplinary study of man.

A great deal of credit for this program must go to the Trustees of the Keene Academy. Without their confidence it would have been difficult if not impos-sible to structure and develop this program.

To learn a foreign language is to discover a bright new world of exciting experiences and unlimited opportunities, both practical and es-thetic.

The modern methods and excellent equip-ment of Keene High School enable the stu-dent to speak and work capably in French or Spanish, or to broaden his horizons through the study of Latin.

up this specialized department. Many of them, Clothing and Textiles, Child Care, Nutrition and Diets, seem to be made up of girl students. These two departments in Keene High School serve the cultural needs of the students, the school, and the community.

We all know what fine works of art we see displayed constantly throughout the school, and occassionally at formal exhibits. We know the students who take art courses and are enthusiastic in the courses they are taking.

Everyone looks forward to concerts given by the Music Department and the spirited playing by the band at assemblies.

The aim of the Physical Education department is to keep the students at Keene High physically fit. By offering various activities such as basketball, touch football, field hockey, soccer, soft ball, and numerous exercises, both boys' and girls' gym teachers work to achieve this goal. These teachers also spend much time coaching the several organized teams for in-tramural and extramural contests.

Business and Distributive Education at the begin-ning of the 1970's represents a vigorous, forceful, mean-ingful facet of high school education. The Business De-partment at KHS offers several programs to meet the twin challenge of providing students with personal-use skills and knowledges as well as job skills to meet a de-manding market. A student may elect Vocational Pro-grams in Distribution, Clerical, Stenographic, Book-keeping-Accounting, or Cooperative Education. "Co-op" offers on-the-job training in the areas of Office Oc-cupations or Distribution-Marketing. These programs are highly recommended for the student desiring full-time employment after graduation or the college-bound student who desires to qualify for part-time positions while continuing school.

Distributive Education, a new program in the Business Department this year, affords the student an opportunity to acquire background and training in the distributive occupations in-cluding merchandising, salesmanship, advertising, or marketing.

HEALTH COURSE The Health Course is new at Keene High this year.

Freshmen are enrolled in this program for one semester. From first-aid to proper Vitamin control these students learn many vital things that are not available in other classes. Under the teaching of Mr. Pierpont, the Health Course is a fine example of the constantly improving curriculum here at Keene High School.

THE READING CENTER

Much could be said about the benefits derived from the use of the Reading Center. Few schools are as fortu-nate as Keene High School in having such a well equipped facility.

Students have improved their reading ability here; many have increased their speed and comprehension rate. The reading stations with reading machines, as pictured at the left, give the students an immediate measure of their progress.
