T he University! So he had passed beyond the challenge of the sentries who had stood as guardians of his boyhood and had sought to keep h im am ong th em th a t he m ight be subject to th em and serve their ends. Pride after satisfaction up lifted h im like long slow waves. The end he had been born to serve y e t did not see had led h im to escape by an unseen path: and now i t beckoned to h im once m ore and a new adventure was about to be opened to h im . It seem ed to h im th a t he heard notes of fitful m usic leaping upwards a tone, and downwards a d im inished fourth, upwards a to n e , and downwards a m ajor th ird , like trip le-b ranch ing flam es leaping fitfu lly flam e after flam e , out of a m idnight wood. It was an e lfin prelude, endless and formless; and as i t grew w ilder and faster, the flam es leap ing out of tim e , he seem ed to hear from under the boughs and grasses w ild creatures rac ing , th e ir fee t pattering like ra in upon the leaves. T heir fee t passed in pattering tum ult over his m ind, the fee t of hares and rabbits, the fee t of harts and hinds and antelopes, un til he heard th em no more and rem em bered only a proud cadence from Newman: "Whose fee t are as the fee t of harts and underneath the everlasting arm s."

My son invites me to witness w ith h im a ch ildren 's program , a series of cartoons, on television. Addressing m yself to share his harm less pleasures,I am horrified by the unbridled v io lence and hostility of the im agined world he takes in stride, where hum an beings dressed in the skins of m ice are ea ten b y portcullises and cow catchers, digested through the winding corridors of organs, overshoes, boa constrictors and locom otive boilers, to be excreted in waters where shark and squid and abalone w ait to em ploy their tenac les and jaws. It seems there is no object in this world unable to becom e a gu lle t w ith great lonely tee th ; som etim es a set of tee th a ll by itself com es clack ing over an endless p lain after the moving mouse; and though the mouse wins in the end, the ta il of one cartoon is spliced into the mouth of the next, where his rapid and triv ia l agony repeats itse lf in another form. My son has seen these things a num ber of tim es, and knows w hat to expect; he

does not seem disturbed or anything more than m ildly amused. Maybe these old cartoons refer to my childhood and not to his (The ogres in them w ear M ussolini's face), so th a t when m ice are swallowed by skeletons or em pty suits of arm or, when a tribe of savage Negro m ice is put through a wringer and stacked fla t in the ce lla r, he can take the objective and c ritic a l view , while I am shaken to see the giant picassoid parents eating and voiding the ir little m ice tim e and again. And when the cheery announcer cries, "W ell, kids, th a t's the end, " m y son gets up o b edien tly and runs outside to pla.y. I hope he w ill ride over this world as w ell, and th a t his crudest and most terrifying dream s w ill not return w ith such wide publicity .

THE SOUND OF TREES

I wonder about the trees.W hy do we wish to bear Forever th e noise of these M ore than another noise So close to our dw elling p lace?We suffer them by the day T ill we lose a ll m easure of p ace , And fixity in our joys,And acquire a lis ten ing air.T hey are th a t th a t talks of going But never gets away; And th a t talks no less for knowing, As it grows wiser and older,T hat now it m eans to stay.My fee t tu g at the floor And m y head sways to m y shoulder Som etim es when 1 w atch trees sway, From the window or the door.I shall set forth for som ewhere,I shall m ake the reckless choice Some day when they are in voice And tossing so as to scare The w hite clouds over them on.I shall have less to say,But I shall be gone.

Frost

Only those b eneath m e can envy or ha te m e.I have never b een envied nor hated; I am above no one.Only those above m e can praise or b e l i ttle m e.I have never been praised nor b e littled ;I am below no one.
