Charlie Hews, left, Ontario Division vicepresident, Inco Metals Company, recentlypresented Dr. Henry Best, president of Laurentian University, with a cheque for $60000as part of Inco's pledge in support of the University's School of Engineering, and toexpress the company's belief that the joint efforts of the university and the mining industrywill result in one of the most progressive schools of mining engineering and mineralprocessing engineering in North America. The present enrolment of 120 students in theSchool of Engineering constitutes an increase of 54 percent over the enrolment for theyear 1976J7. This is beyond the pro fections for enrolment in each of the three yearsof the School of Engineering for the year 1977-78.

While in Sudbury to address the Northern Ontario Medical Association, Ontario Liberalleader Dr. Stuart Smith took time out from his busy schedule to take in an orientationtour of Inco's Clarabelle mill and the Copper Cliff smelter complex. Members of the Board of Directors and the AdvisoryCommittee of nco Limited recently met in Copper Cliff for theirregular monthly meeting.

Following a board meeting and a luncheon at the CopperCliff Club, the distinguished group, along with officers ofInco Limited, Inco Metals Company and ESB Incorporated, tookin an extensive tour of the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery,followed by a visit to Laurentian University.

Also on the agenda for the day was a trip to the tailingsarea, and a comprehensive tour of the Copper Cliff smelter andthe new Canadian AlIpys Division Rolling Mill of Inco Limited'sFormed Metal Products Group.

Hunting Safety and Good MannersThe sport of hunting ranks as one of

Ontario's leading recreational pursuits,in which the enjoyment comes more fromthe appreciation of nature and thesatisfaction of skilfully handling firearmsthan from getting a full bag.

Each year, some 24,000 new huntersrespond to the call of the hunt, and thenumber of resident hunters is well abovehalf a million. With so many sportsmenafield, and with some areas so crowded,the risk of hunting accidents cannot, andmust not, be ignored.

Much depends on safety awarenessand good common sense.

Do remember that you're not allowedto hunt without a licence, and you mustkeep it on your person at all times whenhunting. And when applying for your firsthunting licence, your safety techniques

will certainly be put to the test; in fact,every new hunter under 20 years of agemust take a course in safe hunting andpass the required examination. Veteranhunters are well advised to brush up oncurrent regulations regarding the use offirearms and the proper, basic knowledgerequired in the field.

The safest rifle for an inexperiencedshooter is a bolt action, preferably asingle shot, because it's relatively easy tosee at a glance if the action is open andunloaded. A single shot, of course,provides only one cartridge at a time tocheck or clear.

Remember too that when crushed orstruck with hammer or stone, yourammunition can burst when it goes off,and bits of metal from the primer or casecan cause serious injury.

In all situations, a good sportsman is ahunter who has a high code of moralethics. That means that, when armedwith a shotgun, you don't shoot sittinggrouse or duck on the water. You refuseto take a shot at a duck or goose beforeit's within range. You don't shoot at apheasant when the bird is in the angle offire of your hunting partner, nor would youclaim game that you didn't shoot. Youalways check if you've made a clean missor wounded your game; you accept theresponsibility for all your actions, evenyour mistakes. And you don't measureyour hunting success by the amount ofgame you bag; rather, you look for andenjoy the intangible values of relaxation,fresh air, new knowledge, the beauty ofnature, and good companions who cancomplement any hunting trip.

PatMacDonaldgets themessageacross

Well, one things for sure, you wontfind me sitting around the house, talkingon the phone for hours, claims PatMacDonald, administrative switchboardoperator at the Copper Cliff generaloff ice.

And small wonder, for a regular day atthe office can involve Pat in businessexchanges with Guatalahara, Mexico,in-depth conversations with Guatemala,Indonesia, clearing calls to Munich,Germany, and brainstorming telephoneoperators in the land down under.

Sometimes I have trouble com-municating with people in GuatemalaPat admits, so we just keep repeatingourselves until the message comesthrough. When things get rough inanother language, I call Marina Abarfrom our customs department; shespretty good in French and German.

I really enjoy my job, says Pat. Itcan be a lot of fun, once you get to knowthe different people. But you've alwaysgot to watch what you say. Just whenyou think you know everyones voice, youcan say the right thing to the wrongperson, or the wrong thing to the rightperson, and first thing you know, you'vegot troubles'

Pat started with Inco as a mail girl in1952, and worked in the pay office andstencil room before obtaining her presentposition. She figures that her greatestasset is her memory. "A good memory isprobably the most important qualificationneeded to do this job well, Pat mentions.'If I had to stop and look up the same

phone numbers all day for all the callsthat have to be placed, I'd probably gocrazy.

As you know, lnco has become much morethan a nickel company, although nickel is still ourprincipal product. Our corporate name changelast year - from The International NickelCompany of Canada. Limited to, simply, IncoLimited - reflects the fact that the company isdiversified. The formation of Inca MetalsCompany earlier ths year completed the formalrestructuring of the corporation.

The technological responsibilities of IncoMetals fall into three catagories: engineering,where many disciplines are represented -mining, civil. construction, electrical, mechanical,industrial and systems engineering; exploration,which encompasses geologists, geophysicistsand support personnel; and. finally, processresearch and technology, composed of processengineers, chemists and technologists who areresponsible for the efficient operation of ourprocessing facilities, as well as the developmentof new and improved process technology.

The restructuring of Inco Limited to make itmore responsive to today's business realities -and, in particular, the creation of Inco MetalsCompany - is, in part, a reflection of thefundamental changes that have taken place in thenickel industry worldwide. Here in Sudbury, thenickel capital of the world, our role as a nickelproducing region has been affected significantlyby a gradual transformation in the over-all nickelpicture during the past quarter-century.

The changes. and what they hOve portended,may not always have been apparent to allSudbur:ans At times they have Oeen subtle,seemingly of little significance. And throughoutthese changes. nickei has been a consistentlystrong economic anchor, keeping Sudbury morebuoyant than many other communities duringthose periods 'when the economy has beensluggish. I'm sure. however, that recent eventshave brought the picture more clearly into focus.

it's hard to realize that in the early 1950s therewere only three significant sources of nickel -Ontario, New Caledonia and the U S.S.R Today,there are over 20 producing locations andcountries, and production has quadrupled.

In 1950, Canada completely dominated worldnickel production - 247 million pounds out of atotal of 260 million pounds in the Western world,

A quarter-century ago, Inco alone producedover 90 per cent of the non-Communist world'sneeds - all from its Sudbury operations. Lastyear, Canada produced about 531 millionpounds, or about 43 per cent of non-Communistworld production. The Sudbury basin accountedfor about one-third of the nickel produced in theWestern world in 1976. a far cry from its relativeposition some 25 years ago.

Incidentally. while accurate figures are notavailable, we estimate that nickel production inthe Communist bloc has increased about seven-fold since 1950 to a total of 350 to 400 millionpounds. A small amount of Communistproduction filters into Western markets, but,essentially, their production has remained inapproximate net balance with their consumption.Thus, my remarks today will deal mainly with theevolution of the nickel industry in the non-Communist world only.

Back in 1950 almost all of the nickel in theworld - 95 per cent - came from sulphide ores,

These statistics reveal clearly that Sudbury andInco are no longer dealing from positions ofoverwhelming size and strength Furthermore, thenickel industry has been pinched hard in the cost-price squeeze that has affected many businessesin recent years Further along in my remarks I'lldeal with this subject in greater detail

In terms of Sales, while Inco 5 still by far thebiggest - with something on the order of 35 percent of the non Communist world market in 1976- we now face formidable competition from manysources Falconbridge, with operations inSudbury and the Dominican Republic, had a totalof about 10 per cent Le Nickel, the big Frenchenterprise with mines in New Caledonia in theSouth Pacific, had some 8 per cent. Japanesesuppliers, who import all of their raw nickel feed,had about 18 per cent. All the other suppliersaccounted for approximately 29 per cent, whichincluded some nickel from Communist countriesIt's noteworthy that the new producers, thosewho came on stream in 1975-76, had about 8 percent of the market.

The fundamental point I'm trying to get acrossto you is that the nickel industry has undergone atremendous evolution in the past quarter-century.and it behooves everyone with a stake in theindustry - directly or indirectly - to bring himselfup to date

Since the end of 1974. we estimate thatproducers in the non-Communist world havetripled their normal combined inventories ofnickel There are also some excess merchant andconsumer stocks essentiall in the majormarkets in the United States, Europe and JapanUnless there is a dramatic turnaround in themarket - and that is highly unlikely - or unlessproduction i furTher reduced, no significantdecrease in worldwide inventories can beexpected in the near future, certainly not byyearend.

Inco has the largest Share of the world's excessnickel inventories. Ours represents about fourmonths' deliveries over our normal inventory oftwo to three months' supply During the pastcouple of years, Inco continued to accumulateinventory as an investment in the future, and toensure high and stable employment in theSudbury and Thompson areas. The continuedbuildup could only be maintained, however aslong as there was an expectation that the nickelwould be absorbed by the market within areasonable period of time, and as long as it wasrealistic and feasible in terms of Inco's financialresources, costs and tax burden

Some months ago, realizing that we hadreached both these limitations, we modified thisyear's production goals. To accomplish this, wedecided the best course of action for allconcerned was not to replace all employees lostthrough normal attrition - retirements, quits andthe like Based on our current production andmarketing estimates for the balance of 1977 thisaction is aimed at preventing a further increase ininventories We are in the process of developing aproduction plan for 1978, but it is stiU too early topredict with any degree of certainty the evels ofderrand and supp!y that will prevail in the nickeimarket next year

comparable increase in the average prce we arerealizing, or can expect to realize, for our primar7nickel products.

Copper unit costs more than doubled duringthe tenyear period, while copper prices rose only27 per cent. The general softness in copperprices, except in 1974, has been a source ofconstant frustration. Right now, the situation isparticularly bad Copper prices in North Americaand on the London Metal Exchange havedeclined steadily in the past three months. Theyare now at their lowest level in several years, andtheres no sure way of telling when the copperprice skid will end. Even if the prices shouldremain at their present level, the average netselling value for 1977 would end up close to the1975 realization.

The effect on copper producers of a market thathas become unpredictable and virtually out ofcontrol is catastrophic. When world productioncontinues to rise in the face of falling demand, theinevitable result is sorely depressed prices. AllNorth American copper producers are hurtingbadly, and Inco is no exception. Its probably notgenerally known that, from Sudbury, we deliveralmost as much copper to market as nickel.Copper isnt just one of our by-products, its a co-product with nickel.

The principal factor in Incos unit costs hasbeen rising labor costs These have occurreddespite a significant improvement in our laborproductivity over the past ten years

Incos unit labor costs in Ontario rose morerapidly that the U.S or Canadian averages until1 972, then decuned relatively to 1974 when our .production was h:gh and mine development andmaintenance were mnimized to meet productiontargets and sales demands. They rose sharplyfollowing our labor ontracts in 1975 continuedto rse n 1976 and 1977 and are now well abovehe Canadian and U S cornrnerc ai averages

Operation "Copper"At approximately 08:30 hours, Friday,

September 9, 1977, a young mandressed in white coveralls casuallystrolls through the hangar area atToronto's Malton Airport. He watcheswhile preparations are made to ready aBeechcraft twin-engine aircraft fortake-off. A pilot boards, along with histhree passengers.

Our young man springs into actionand orders the pilot, under duress, toproceed as normal until airborne. Oncealoft, the pilot is ordered to fly toSudbury Airport, where further instruc-tions will be given.

"What's this?" you might well ask.Has Sudbury been involved in a hijacking,compounded by the kidnapping of threehostages?

In actual fact, no, But in practise, yes.A special exercise was recently carriedout, using the airport's old terminalbuilding, to expose airport personnel andlocal police forces to an airport securitysituation calling for interface andmaximum joint effort.

The "scenario" went something likethis: Because of recent adverse publicityconcerning the conditions within penalinstitutions, certain convicts had becomevery unsettled and militant. A group ofextremely dangerous inmates with longsentences planned to seize the oppor-tunity to gain their release from "CopperCliff Pen." The plan was for one of theirclose associates on the outside to hijackan aircraft and use it as a bargaining toolto procure their release and subsequent

safe passage to an undisc.oseddestination.

At approximately 09:30 hours, the air-craft arrives at Sudbury airport, atwhich time the control tower is advisedby the pilot that his aircraft is beingheld under hijack conditions.

The nformation was immediatelyrelayed to the Sudbury Regional PoliceForce, who then took over: they placed acommander in charge of the situation andbrought in their negotiator, who isspecialiy trained to deal with suchsituations.

At approximately 09:35 hours, airportsecurity and contingency plans areput into effect. The hijacker has advisedthat a bomb has been placed in theairport terminal by an accompliceand is equipped with a timing device.He further advises that an explosivedevice is on board the plane. Hedemands the release of specificinmates at "Copper Cliff Pen", safepassage, and $100,000 in Americanfunds.

The "bomb", planted in the old airportterminal, was located by the SudburyAirport police, then recovered anddisposed of by the Ontario ProvincialPolice bomb disposal squad. Negotiationscontinued.

At approximately 13:30 hours, theexplosive device aboard the aircraft isaccidentally triggered, forcing thehijacker to remove himself from theplane and resulting in his apprehension.

And thus ended "Exercise Copper."Talking with Bert Hague, Deputy-Chief

in charge of operations with the SudburyRegional Poce Force, The Triangleasked him what prompted the exercise inthe first place:

"Well, extortion and kidnappings dooccur n Canada, and we feel we have tobe prepared. This was merely a simu-lated situation, a training exercise, thatwe thought was very successful. TheMinistry of Transportation suggested it,and we certainly welcomed it. Our peopletreated it very seriously, in a most profes-sional manner, and the co-operation wasextremely good between the OFF, theMinistry, the airport police and staff, andourselves.

Commander of the exercise wasInspector George Nault of the RegionalPolice; second commander, as backup,was Detective-Sergeant Jack Burke fromthe OPP.

And just as matters of interest, a canineteam from Thessalon was brought in totrack; a negotiator from Timmins wascalled in for the exposure and experience;ambulances were notified, and theGarson and Sudbury fire departmentswere advised. And the "hostages", bythe way, were members of the Ministry ofTransportation, Toronto.

Quite an all-out exercise, and wellworth the effort. As they say, "an ounceof prevention is worth a pound of cure,"and it's nice to know that our local"gendarmes" are trying to keep one stepaheadl

The Course!Copper Refinery

Over at the Lively Golf and Country Club, the copperrefinery's athletic association's semi-annual golf tourney saw 76participants vying for top honours. Sid Segsworth took the lowgross with a respectable 71, followed by Gary Constantineauwith a 79. Don Pilon took the low net with a score of 66,while Dom Castanza,was runner-up with a 69,

The athletic association is already looking forward to nextyear's tournament and the possibility of playing on the LivelyClub's expanded 18-hole golf course.

Changing a 42-ply tire on a 75-ton-capacity haulage truck requiresspecial know-how. Here, United Tire's Tim Johnson rigs the tirewith chains before lifting it with a mobile crane. Retreading will takeplace back at the shop.

After buffing the old tread, a new tread is applied to a service tirecasing using a special treadbuilder. The long strips of tread aresecured with adhesive bonding agent before going through thefour-hour curing process.

Using an overhead trolley, Tim Brouse removes the service tire fromthe curing chamber, The tire was tubed and mounted on curing rims,then inflated and cured for about four hours under constant pressureat 210°F.

RetiredOver the past few decades, many

changes have taken place in the miningtechniques being implemented at lncosvarious underground operations. Perhapsthe most effective has been the introduc-tion of trackless mining equipment, whichhas resulted in making ore extractionmore efficient, productive, and flexible.

In order to keep this heavy industrialequipment moving on soUd footing, Incosmining department administers a large-scale program of tire maintenance, com-prised of care, supply, and follow-up.

Since there are over 2000 scooptramand truck tires in use around IncosSudbury operations, the local tire dealersare kept busy filling the demand for newtires and retreads. Each year, some $2.5million worth of tires roll into Incooperations.

Tires are a major expense, whenyoure talking about the quantity neededto fulfill the needs of Incos mobile

equipment fleet, says Len Kitchenermines equipment engineer, and becauseof the initial cost of tires, our goal is toachieve an average of four retreads pertire.

Many of Incos tires are required foruse on highly specialized equipment. Ourmassive haulage truck tires cost $3500each, with an estimated life of over2000 hours. After the wearable portionof the tread has been consumed, the tiresare dispatched for retread. Since eachtruck has six tires, and there are eight ofthe 75-ton haulage trucks in operation atCopper Cliff, were talking about $225000worth of tires, including spares, just forthis one particular group of equipment.

In addition, there are over 1700scooptram tires in operation underground;since the best tire performance isachieved through maintenance of goodroadways and proper operator care, thescooptram operators are kept well

informed through regular lectures.Because its important to pay close

attention to the wheels, in order to avoidhazards such as dislocated and looselocking rings, all operators are madefamiliar with a company tire-handlingcode. Added Len Kitchener We requirethe highest possible concern by alloperators towards their scooptram tires,in order to attain the best possible tireperformance.

Something quite new on the tire sceneis an experimental embedded chain tirepresently being tested at Frood mine.Normally, tire protection chains revolvearound the tire during operation, causingfrictional wear between tire and chain;the new system attempts to eliminate thisproblem by actually building the chainright into the tire. Its the first system ofits type to be tested under actual workingconditions in North America, and onceagain Frood mine takes the lead ininnovative testing.

Hereye'ashes stifl tangled with sleep, she looked atthe young man with such wonder that hemmediately fe't hs heart melt withn him.

Where am I? she asked, with a voice morefragi'e than crystal.

After he told her that he didnt know, only thatthey were in an immense, boundless forest, sheturned to him once more and asked how he hadcome to this strange yet lovely place, where themalestic trees swayed with the wind in a dance tothe sun.

EH1ah explained how he, too, had one dayawakened in the forest without any memory. Hecontinued to tell Renate how he had wanderedaround for hours and days in the hope of findinganother human being.

If you wish, I will bring you to a house at theheart of this great forest where lives the personwho has guided me around ever since I camehere, Elilah suggested. Renate rose from theblanket of white flowers on which she had beenlying and followed him.

As they proceeded through the dark corridors ofthe mmense forest, Elijah mentioned how he hadmet the old woman who lived at the heart of theforest. He added that the people of the forestfoUowed a time calendar which was based on thelife span of their Magna Venefica, or Great Witch.

As they passed under the various trees, hepointed out how the eaves were changing color,and that therefore, Haloween, the rite whichcelebrated Autumn, was quickly approaching.According to EliIah, the Halloween ritual was themost magnificent of all rites because the vividcolors of the forest always created a beautifulbackground for the event.

As they neared the Great Witch 'S cottage,Renate began to feel a wondrous warmthenveloping her body. When, at last, she wasgreeted into the house, she became aware of thefact that it was the great Witch herself who wasradiating this marvelous warmth.

At first glance, Renate understood why thiswoman was regarded as the Great Witch.Surrounded by cats, rabbits and birds, the oldwoman did indeed give the impression of being thenucleus of life to the forest and its creatures.

The old woman 's crystal blue eyes were clearand alive with energy they sparkled like twobrilliant diamonds.

"I am so happy Elijah found you," the GreatWitch expressed with a generous smile, 'you maybe my guest here as ong as you wish. Then,without saying more, she left the room,accompanied by her cats.

As she vanished from sight, Elijah whispered toRenate that he had once heard that all the catswhich surround the old woman were once greatwitches themselves, who were forced to transformthemselves into a lesser shape after their reign.

The Great Witch can never marry, Elijahadded, her sole responsibility is to the forest andits creatures:

She has only one sister, Elijah continued.and her name is Zenobia. Although her power is

limted, she can still bewitch a few of the forestpeople into doing evil deeds for her.

When the last great witch was choosing asuccessor centuries ago there was a rumor that shewas having a difficult time choosing between thepresent Great Witch and her sister. Both werestrong, beautiful and intelligent women, with awisdom far beyond that of their peers. Yetalthough they were alike in so many ways, onecharacteristic distinguished the two: while the onewas always concerned with the welfare of theforest, the other, Zenobia, was selfishly using herpowers to mpi'ove her own personal beauty andwefare. And so, it came to be, that Zenobias vicebecame apparent to the Great Witch who wasreigning at the time, and her sister became thesuccessor. Zenobia, filled with rage and jalousy,has aways tried to overthrow her sister, but theatter has always been too wise and good to letherself be destroyed. The forest people say thatZenobia wifl make her greatest attempt tooverthrow the Great Wtch at this Halowe'ensntua. If this s so, the entire event will surey be adsaster

Renate soon fell asleep, entering into a dream ofmagic and fantastic spells, with a reality farbeyond any she could have imagined.

When Renate showed Elijah the two diamonds,he explained to her that diamonds were very rarein the forest, although emeralds, zircons, rubiesand pearls were quite common. Then he showed

As Renate's eyes opened with wonder, herbeauty became more and more obvious to Eli1ahHer flowing hair, secretive green eyes andenchanting voice were not the only qualities whchattracted Eli1ah. She was surrounded by amysterious scent as innocent as a bouquet ofSpring flowers, and as sophisticated as the mostexotic perfumes worn by the forest women onspecial occasions. She was indeed the mostbeautiful creature in the forest. Soon, he thought,he would ask her to marry him,

When they reached the grounds, a large fire waslit by the Great Witch herself. The Blue Moon waspresent in the sky, and all those involved in theceremony were either dancing in a circle aroundthe fire or chattering among themselves.

When the ceremony was about to reach its peakthe Great Witch summoned her people to join intwo circles around the fire, As they danced, thepeople chanted the words to the incantation whichwould renew the old woman's powers for anotherseason.

Towards the end of the hour of Jupiter, whenthey were nearly finished the last verse of theirmagic spell, the incantation was interrupted by aflash of lightning in the sky. Without invitation,Zenobia appeared from the darkness, releasingfrom her cold violet lips such an evil laugh that thedancing and chanting ceased at once.

Tall and cruelly beautiful, she glared at hersister with such an icy gaze that the old womanwhimpered. With her incantation ruined, herpowers could not be renewed until Candlemas,which was the next seasonal ritual Even so,without her magical leadership, the people wouldsoon turn to Zenobia for protection against thenatural cruelties of the forest,

A "first" for hoistingA further improvement to the already-

modernized hoisting system at LevackNo. 2 shaft skip hoist has recently beencompleted. The improvement consistsof the installation of the first ever'Canadian General Electric design of atotally solid state' field application,regulation and VAR correction system forlarge synchronous motors.

This equipment replaces the rotatingexciter and electromechanical relay whichwas originally purchased in 1952.Frequent maintenance requirements, aswell as unscheduled hoisting delays,created the need to reassess the originalequipment, with the result that Inco'sgeneral engineering construction servicesgroup performed an analysis of theequipment and recommended thatLevack replace the existing equipmentwith a new prototype package.

The new system is made up ofsophisticated circuitry employing bothanalog and digital components. Thesystem monitors the 5500-horsepowersynchronous motor during the startingcycle, provides continuous protection, anddetermines the ultimate time to apply fieldcurrent for synchronization. In addition,it continually monitors the load on thehoisting system to provide variable fieldcurrent, so that the power system requ ire-ments can be held constant, which, inturn, reduces line losses, and providesenergy conservation by improvingLevack's line voltage conditions.

Installation was performed by theLevack electrical maintenance depart-ment, under the guidance of foremanTom Bayford; technical assistance camefrom general engineering's JohnWildgoose.

The new McLelland Arena in Copper Cliff was given an added boost recently when HughJudges, Ontario Division planner, Inco Metals Company, presented a $12,500 cheque to LeoBiggar, superintendent of facHities and maintenance, parks and recreation department of thecity of Sudbury. The cheque was used to pay for an ice clearing machine that will come inhandy when the rink is opened to the public.

Working safely has become second nature to ths Garson mine sandfill crew. Under thesupervson of shift boss Lawrence Burton, the crew has gone over a year without a dressngof any kind, and they aim to keep it that way

The bulk of Inco's premium quality iron ore pellets are still moving through Turner Dockacross the North Channel from Little Current, Manitoulin Island, for distribution to points inthe central United States and Canada. The pellets, transported to Canadian Pacific Limited'sTurner Dock by rail, have become the mainstay of the dock. At 2000 tons an hour, it takes afull 8tour shift to load the Algoma Central Laker "Algoway", above getting ready to dock, to14 000 tons, its capacity in Little Current harbour. The draught available to a boat decides theamount of cargo it can hold. Lower water levels this year have reduced the boat's capacityabout 18 inches of cargo, or 2,000 tons from last year. Allowed the full seaway draught, the"Algoway' will carry 23,000 tons, Using frontend loaders to feed the shiploader fromstockpiles, the pellets are loaded into the freighter's hold. A conveyor belt in the bottom of thehold can shift the cargo further to the correct compartment.

Team a thinking man with a fancy flying machine and the possibilities are endless, andthe fishermen of the area are grateful thatLen McTaggart, of Dominion-Pegasus Helicopters, came up with the idea of convertinghis Jet Ranger into a flying fish tank. TheMinistry of Natural Resources hires Len to flyinto many of the inaccessible smaller lakes inthe Sudbury area which can't be stocked bytransport or fixedwing aircraft. The tanks areof Len's own design, and he fills them withwater and fish. Len then lands on the lakes,and with the help of aircraft mechanic KenMerrill, above, releases the fish inches fromthe water.

Admirably situated at the east end of Lake Ramsay, with excellent swimming and sports facilities, these picnic groundsleased and equipped by Frood Welfare Association have been the scene of very successful picnics staged by the Frood Welfareand by the Copper Cliff Benefit Association. Photo shows a portion of the Frood picnic crowd gathered around the refreshmentcounters. At both events races, softball matches, pie-eating contests, and other features contributed to thoroughly enjoyedprograms. Free ice cream was distributed in copious quantities to the kiddies, who took full advantage of this golden opportunity.The initiative of the sponsoring Associations evoked a great deal of favorable comment, and the popular picnics will probably beheld annually in the future. Always a valuable addition to any entertainment, the Coniston Band is seen in the foreground.
