People need other people. Yet it often happens that we get lost in crowds. W e forget we are dealing with persons and treat each other as numbers or simply objects. Gaping at catastrophes, we ignore the human element. We becom e immune to the pain of others. Cynicism overtakes us. We feel the necessity of leaving it all behind and abandoning our responsibilities . . . .

They scuffle with the crowd to get their share.

Oh people, look around you,The signs are everywhere. You've left it for someone other than you, To be the one to care.

Page 6: 1978 Petrean

These are the times we must retreat. We need to stop and reflect in order to see where we are going. Alone by the sea or in front of a fire, we experience a feeling of peace, of escape from the pain and confusion of the outside world. But no matter how comforting and important these escapes, we are required to return — refreshed, renewed, filled once again with vigor for life. . . .

Page 7: 1978 Petrean

But the morning brings strength to your restless wings.

M

It's hard,But I feel my strength returning. We'll see how far this new road reaches.

Page 8: 1978 Petrean

I know a little space between two friends Can sometimes do them good,

But once in a while we need to touch, The way that people should.

6

Page 9: 1978 Petrean

Oh people, look among you. It is there your hope must lie.

And we express this vigor in the same way we lost it — with others — this time linked with them in teams, activities, communities.

We also explore together. Even the most absurd things we do have great

meaning because we do them with each other. We learn about each other

and ourselves this way.

This unity is important in all the world. R estricted neither by place nor time, it is found in nations, in churches, and in every place where people join together.

Don't think it won't happen,Just because it hasn't happened yet.

Page 18: 1978 Petrean

No matter how fast I run,I can never seem to get away from me.

Life is seldom what it seems,But lay your heart upon the table, And in the shuffling of dreams, Remember who on earth you are.

People should sacrifice for each other. They need to be a part of a community. Yet, the individual is ultimately responsible to be himself. He cannot lose himself in the organization or he has no identity outside of the organization.

Each of us is unique. O ne of the greatest gifts God has given us is our individuality. W e have a responsibility to retain it.

Gnothi Seauton - Know Yourself - is one of the principles upon which Greek society rested. This idea has surfaced again and again in different words and languages for the past twenty-five hundred years. For many this simple phrase is the culmination of all of life's experiences. Although this phrase sounds like a very secretive and inner experience, nevertheless one comes to know oneself by the interaction with those things outside of oneself. Some of these interactions are fleeting, while others last a lifetime. Either can be equally important.

The ancient Greek who did not interact with his fellows was called an idios. (The English derivative is most obvious.) It referred to someone who was wrapped up in his own little cacoon, caring nothing for others. Such a person was considered asocial, apathetic, and lethargic. The Greeks pitied and frowned upon such an individual. He was considered infantile and self- centered. Each person was expected to contribute his share to the overall well-being of the entire population. Although the direct democracy of Athens made it easier for the citizen to participate in the affairs of the state, the point is lost if one sees this idea in purely political terms. The central idea expressed by this phrase is that one can never get to know oneself, to be true to oneself, so to speak, unless one sees how one interacts with others. Unless we become a member of a group, or team, or activity we can never get to know our real potential. Unless we strive with others for a common goal, be it an athletic victory, a lterary achievement, or the best dance in town, we can never truely know of our strengths and weaknesses. Unless we sacrifice and work hard, asserting leadership at the proper time, and being a listener when necessary, we can never truly become an integral part of the life force around us. In short, we never give ourselfs the opportunity of knowing ourselves- probably the most unique of all individuals.

Sincerely Yours,Mr. Galiastro

As a man who has tried to live a com m unity centered life, I must admit that there are tensions one feels between com m unity and individuality, between sharing and keeping, between self-sacrifice bmlding up oneself, and between love of others and love of self. If these currents operate m a rehgious community, they must also be operative in our family lives and in our school community. In other words, it is a reality thatone had better learn to deal with. It provides us chances by which we can 8 r o ™ - nrovided one

The first thing to be said about these polarities is that they are goods in themselves provided one maintains the tension between the various polarities. The philosophers and the theologians long g the ever-new truth t^at n ^ n must strive to?ive a balanced"life-style. Their £ * *bv the sound psychologists and the environmentalists. I suppose there is something in our nature that seemsto demand that a human being live in harmony with himself, with his n e i g h b o r s , ^ ' * he ^ ^ r® X t h i n g is a human asceticism that leads us to the threshold and mystery of God and Chnst In the end the o n * thmg that can help us with this human asceticism is love. My prayer for all of us at St. Peter's is that we grow to the fullest extent of our own talents so that we m.gnmore fully be ourselves and join ourselves to the Lord.

SOCCERMany people said last year that our winning the

county title was a fluke, but winning two in a row means a lot of effort on behalf of many individuals; the individuals that make up Prep's soccer team. They almost had a flawless season; 18-3. Com ing off with a strong start, the team received its first state ranking, and had better records than 11 the teams in the top 20. The team lost its 4th game but went on to win 14 straight after that. This group of individuals, who learned to work uniformly, was the only team in the county to beat Harrison. The team was coached by Ron Prezioso, who received the Coach of the Year Award last year and proudly received this award once more.

GYMNASTICSThis year's Gym Team faced uncertainty as the

school year began. Practice had not been organized until a week after school was opened when Tom M architto '76 offered to coach the team.

The season started almost immediately, so Tom pulled together the team members and showed them how to work with each other to put together a good team.

This year's team was made up of students from all four years-it was not dominated by one star as can happen in such an individual sport, but a true team effort by all was present. With unity in their efforts, the gymnasts had a w inning year.

BOWLINGAlthough the bowling team consists of five men,

it is in some ways an individual sport. Each mem ber contributes his part. John O ehl and Billy W olchko led this year's team and both had some outstanding individual games. O ther members also contributed to help the team in a fine finish. This year's team was young and next year they look to do better. Fine individual performances coupled with team play and spirit made Prep's bowling team a contender again.

HOCKEYTeamwork at Prep demands more than effi

cient functioning. The precision of a com puter is not enough. Genuine teamwork requires cooperation. Faculty and students are called upon to assist one another, to anticipate difficulties and head them off, to jum p in and help when help is needed. "I am my brother's keeper" is our motto and not Cain's reply to the Lord. This type of cooperation produces the best teamwork and creates com m unity, the real union of hearts.

As a man matures he gradually becom es capable of cooperating in a team. Maturity lifts his eyes, raises them from that fixed star at self that characterizes children. The needs of others suddenly com e into view, and the mature man reaches out to them even at cost to himself. He is willing to sacrifice his own desires, or even a less important need of his own for the sake of the more important need of another. This co operation is the fulfillment of God's command "Love your neighbor as yourself." In that love is found the substance of community. In that love is found the full measure of a man. He stands tall. He fulfills that potential for greatness that is his unique gift from God. To produce such a man is Prep's goal. It is our Pride and our Glory that Prep has been successful in doing this for O ne Hundred Years.

BASEBALLBaseball is both a team sport and an individual

sport. Each player as an individual does his part to create the team effort. Offense is an essential part of the team's success. O ur offense will rely on the batting strength of Bob Urbanovich, Ed Pritzlaff, Frank Dwyer, and M ike Mastowski. The team aspect is shown in the defensive play, where each team player has a specific assignment. Anchoring the infield chores will be Phil Pritzlaff and Nick Fargo, with the assistance of Vin Donatacci. The major factor of the defensive team is the pitching

Nick Fargo staff. Righthander Perry Bellino and lefthanderScott Rossiter will man the mound for the Prep this season. W ith eight returning seniors, experience is not a problem , and the '78 season looks promising for the county crown.

GOLFThe Prep golf team is the crystalization of the idea of the

individual contributing to the team effort. The golfer is, more than any other athlete, playing for and against himself. O n ce he steps onto the first tee, he has no teammate to block for him and no opponent to retard his progress or return his shots. The team concept does not enter into a match until the final individual scores are tallied.

St. Peter's swingers, without a budget, a home course, or a place to practice, have consistently defeated better prepared suburban schools. This year's team includes Jim Bowling, John Regan, Greg Prindiville, Guy O 'D onnell, James Dow den, Joe Nowicki, Jim M cGovern, and captain Joe Lally, who is the only member who was a starter on last year's squad. The golfers are coached by Rev. J. Francis Stroud, S.J. im Bow*inS

Death is never easy, but whenever it strikes the young, the pain is deeper. Death came in one of its cruelest forms to two members of the class of 1978. Cancer struck Kevin Stawicki and Robert Davis. They fought for life and clung to hope, but finally we lost our brothers.

Someone once said to remember men, not by how they died, but by how they lived. We certainly rem em ber how they did live.

Kevin was a basketball player, a member of the Freshmen team that won the County Cham pionship. He played the guitar and enjoyed music. He loved his friends and had many good times with them.

Bob was a more quiet person. Baseball was his sport and he played well. He grew very close to God during his illness. His last words echo those of Jesus on the cross: "Take me, I'm yours."

Kevin Stawicki and Robert Davis gave us poignant examples of faith and hope. We will never forget them and we offer these pages in their memory.

CLASS HISTORYW ednesday in Septem ber — Fr. A zzarto welcom es the Freshmen to the school

and his office. The year is a learning experience — lights out in the caf means rumble practice. The fire extinguishers really work. Miss Collins will have silence and many will follow Catanio to jug. Freshmen football and basketball teams win as Hawkes eats buttons. Mr. Sullivan's drug program does not prove as good as unstructured unstructured days. The M ontgom ery bus does not pick up Prep- sters with unacceptable habits, so off to W ashington, D .C. on Mr. Mulvihill's. Stop. Review weeks will never be the same.

Aren't this year's Freshmen small? All of the teams have good seasons while all keep in shape in the snowball fights with the natives. Mr. Casey finds it sad that the boys in biology class must eat frogs. In Latin class mortuus equus means dead horse « so pipe down. The cafeteria is ruled with a wet hand by ironman. The F.B.I. stages Drug Bust '76; catches William Tell; and finally takes note that the icecream machine in the caf is free. The Florida trip was great for those who remember it. Though unstructured days are no more, the docks are still visited by Prep men.

The teams do not all have w inning seasons. Kelly, Gray, and W hite lead colorful history classes. The F.B.I. installs surveillance cameras in the deli and the caf. Exciting Spanish II classes are mostly enjoyed during National High Week. The docks com pete with the wall and foul Al's. Chem istry lab explosions intrigue the students. Okay, fine. Ah, hey. The Junior Diggers volunteer as a chord of tragedy strikes and we lose three fine men: Bob Davis, Kevin Stawicki, and Mr. Vince Kennedy.

We finally make it and some still say that everything counts. Every team has a winning season. C'm on now Brother, please? Anyone and everyone can drive. You gotta be kidding ; . . a disco dance? A new pool is built in the locker room. The docks and the wall are frequented by many. Gym class is torture. Petitions are sigried for everything. Thanks to Father A., the new school sport is ping-pong. So it's over, but lets never forget it.

W e've tried in these pages to capture through words and pictures the spirit of cooperation and teamwork that prevades the class of '78 while rem inding everyone of the value of their individuality. And we've had a hell of a time doing it.

Naturally, we owe much thanks to many people: our sponsors for financing the color; Andy M urro for all his help and advice; Photography by Lou, especially Bill, for the portraits, the color prints, and some football pictures; Burger King for countless meals; Anheuser-Busch for invaluable assistance; our families for putting up with our late hours; Jackson Browne, Carole King, Joan Baez, Stephen Stills, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer for lyrical inspiration.

An extra note of thanks must be made to Mrs. Helen Argeylan. Mom is never too tired to run something off, or simply be a friend when she is needed most. Her help has made this yearbook a lot easier. All we can say is thanks.

W e also thank each other for the friendship and love we share. We hope that you enjoy reading the 1978 Petrean as much as

we enjoyed putting it together. The Staff
