By Howie BashantThe reather was almost perfect.

    The promise for Sunday was temperatures in the high 50's with partlycloudy skies. Veterans of last year'sc o l d w i n d s w e r e h e a r t e n e d . T h epromise held as 40 TRRC membersand friends ran the 8th annual Maryland Marathon and its hills of infamy- including the notable Satyr Hill.

    Under three hours!!! I finally did it!After last year's somewhat disappointing 3:06, I felt a little bit moreconfident this year. I knew that if Ic h a r t e d t h e p a c e c a r e f u l l y a n dprepared for appropr ia te a l ternat i ves . I ' d have a chance , tha t , combined wi th an excel lent first -hal f t imeof 1 hour and 25 minutes, made meeven consider breaking 2:50 as a distinct possibility. However, traffic onthe F.D .R . D r i ve s l owed me down abit on the way home and I was ablet o m a k e i t b a c k t o C a r m e l i n 1 : 3 1 ,thus comp le t i ng th i s yea r ' s NewYork Marathon trip in 2:56 - a newpersonal best!

    But what about those hearty soulswearing hearty soles rather thanGoodyear's, who completed NewYo r k 1 9 8 0 w i t h a l i t t l e l e s s h o r s epower but a good bit more couragethan I? After all, that's why we werethere to watch .

    From a spectator's view, the NewYork Marathon is as big an event andexperience as it probably is for arunner. This year's production wasno exception even though we'd doneit before in 1979. Sunday Oct. 26thdawned partly cloudy but extremelywindy and, although it provided atailwind a good part of the way, itwas annoying to the viewing crowdsas well as to the runners. The onlypeop le who seemed comfor tab lewere the policemen lining Ist Avenue in Manhattan who were happy tobe collecting overtime pay for aneasy day 's work . The i r toughes td e c i s i o n , a s w e h u d d l e d b e t w e e n10:00 a.m. & 11:40 am waiting fort h e l e a d e r s , w a s w h e t h e r t h e yshould continually reset the policebar r i cades a f te r the w ind b lew themover o r mere ly leave them ly ingprone on the street. Since theformer decision required effort, thel a t t e r w a s m o s t o f t e n c h o s e n .

    Despite the low comfort level, thec r o w d w a s a r o u s e d w h e n t h e l e a dgroup of a dozen or more runnersapproached our 65th St . vantagepo in t . "Who 's tha t ou t f ron t , ,? Iasked, wishing someone with a program would respond. "Where'sRogers"? "There he is!" the crowdwas cheering wildly now. I wasn.ts u r e t h a t t h e e x c i t m e n t l e v e l w o u l db e a s i n t e n s e t h e s e c o n d t i m earound but it was easily equal to,and maybe even greater than, lasty e a r .

But . a l though the running el i teel ic i ted a certa in thr i l l , the remaining14,000 participants provide our reason for shivering on this blustery October's day.

    "Go get 'em Odis," we scream asw e w e r e a m a z e d a t M r . S a n d e r s 'position. Although not a T.R.R.C.m e m b e r . O d i s S a n d e r s i s a f o r m e rL inco ln Ha l l s tuden t o f m ine and he

The response ofpeople like Dan Caffrey. who smilesand waves this year, and Harry Nees o n w h o e x t e n d s h i s a r m s i n"Rocky-l ike" fahsion thereby drawing cheers from many others in thecrowd, makes the trip to New Yorkworth the traveling time. became a member of TRRC. It was ac h a n c e i n w h i c h t h e d i c e r o l l e dfavorably. If it had been choice theou tcome wou ld have been no d i f f e rent . But choice or chance, i t is , andhas been, a very favorable experi e n c e .

    Will Rogers is always quoted assaying, "I never met a man I didn'tl i k e . " Y o u h a v e t o u n d e r s t a n dRogers was a humorist and showman before being c lassified as aphilosopher. As much as I enjoy andtry to get along with people, thereare a few ind iv idua ls tha t I 'd l i ke toh a v e i n t r o d u c e d W i l l t o .

For tunate ly I haven ' t been associated with any of them in the lastthree years. Is it because runningproduces better individuals or brings

Harry Neeson - Editorout the best in a person? Is itbecause the sport is humbling? Is Itthat TRRC attracts a certain qualityof family? I certainly don't have theanswers, but meditating on the questions poses pleasant thoughts.

    As the holiday season approachesI foresee only more of the same highlevel of espirit-de-corps and com-raderie. It is not only the workingtogether, but the thoughtfulness andc o n s i d e r a t i o n e x t e n d e d t o o n ea n o t h e r t h a t m a k e s T R R C t h e b e s tlittle club in the east, north, west,and south. Being a member of it ismy good fortune.

To each and a l l , on beha l f o f theofficers and staff, may I offer a heal-ty, happy and prosperous New Yearand. to borrow a phrase from a localnewspaper, "Good running."

    established in January of 1978 as achapter of The Road Runner's Clubo f A m e r i c a .

    Like the parent group, TRRC wasorganized to promote distance running, to further the interest of allpeople interested in running as asport, and to ensure that a programo f e v e n t s w o u l d b e c o n d u c t e dt h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r. Hopefully in that range a runner was able tofind an event suited to his or her interest and ability.

As for scenic routes, some post-race eavesd ropp ing revea l s t ha tmost of our events do indeed includesome marvelous scenery. However, they are breathtaking in more waysthan one: HILLS. HILLS, HILLS!!

Our attempts at innovation haveproduced events such as our verysuccessful Biathlon (run/swim), theMemorial Day Weekend Pentathlon, the series of couple's relays, thehandicap track and cross countryraces. Lack of snow for the past twoyears has kept us from having acombined run-ski cross countryrace, but we will try again in 1981.

    Our women's program reached ahigh point in September when Moving Comfort 's lOK attracted moret h a n 2 0 0 e n t r i e s .

    Taconic's calendar, hopefully, isdesigned so the Olympic hopeful andfitness jogger alike should feel theyc a n b e n e fi t f r o m o u r e v e n t s a n dhave fun doing it.

"As is normal with organizations,"said the presiding officer, "the bulkof the work falls on a few individuals. If we could get help in these twoareas it would free two valuable personnel to coordinate their strengthsin o ther areas. "

    a resounding success with the national age-group one mile being theonly black mark. Caffrey explainedthat pressure exhibited by some parents on thei r ch i ldren was into lerableand definitely not in the best interests o f e i ther c lub or ch i ldren. "Thattype of conduct is not in keepingwith the club's philosophy, and as ar e s u l t t h e e v e n t w i l l b e e l i m i n a t e dfrom next year's schedule." hesummed up.

A Look at the TRRC EmblemBy Dr. Philip B. Maffetone

[he TRRC emblem may have avariety of meanings to different people; to some no meaning at all, andsome people just don't even thinkabout it. Let me give my view forwha t i t ' s wor th .

    The t r iang le ,being equilateral,has three equalsides. Looking atthe triangle thisway we can alsos e e a n e m b l e mo f w h o l i s t i chea l th . One s idew e c a n r e f e r t oa s s t r u c t u r e .S t r u c t u r a l h e a l t hrelates to the skeletal system withmuscular and l igamentious attachments. It refers to posture and togait (moving posture). If any aspecto f s t r u c t u r a l h e a l t h i s n o t b a l a n c e dthe total health of the person maybe effected.

    A n o t h e r s i d eo f th is t r iang lecan be related tot h e c h e m i c a laspect of health.I n c l u d e d h e r ea r e a l l t h e e nzyme and hormona l s ys temsof the body, nut r i t i o n a n d d i e t ,a n d a n y o t h e rchemical relat ionship (exhaustfumes, smoke, overeating, etc.) Anyimblance here may affect health inmany ways. A stress in this side ofthe triangle can create an imbalancein the structural aspect as well (andvice versa).

    T h e t h i r d s i d eof this equilatera l t r i a n g l e r el a t e s t o t h em e n t a l ( e m ot i o n a l , p s y c h ological, spiritualetc. , ) aspect ofhealth. Any prob l e m a f f e c t i n gthis part can affect the chemical and/or structuralaspect of health. By considering allt h r e e e q u a l p a r t s o f a p e r s o n ' shealth we consider the whole person, thus wholistic health. It is verydi fficul t i f not impossible to haveonly a one sided problem (only a nutritional or only an emotional problem). Most of the t ime when onedevelops a problem it is due to acombination of problems.

So the next time you put on yourTRRC shirt or see the triangle askyourself if you are doing what youcan to preserve or improve yourto ta l hea l t h . E l im ina t i on o f s t r ess i simportant (structural, chemical andemot iona l s t ress ) . You can ' t e l iminate all stress but by eliminating

    M e n t a l

as much as possible within reason, your body and mind will be able tocope with what stress remains.

    O n e i m p o r t a n t r e l a t i o n s h i p i nregard to this triad of health we'vet a l k e d a b o u t i s t h a t o f t h e m u s c l esystem. It has been shown throughmany studies that muscles have arelationship with various glands andorgans and with certain emotionalfactors. I f there Is an i r r i tat ion in anorgan, then a specific muscle relatedto that organ will become weakened.For example, one who overeats at agiven meal may overtax his or hersma l l i n tes t i ne due to t ha t s t ress o fovereating. The small intestine whenirr i tated wi l l cause a weakness of thequadriceps muscle (usually only onone leg unless the weakness issevere) because of this muscle/organ relationship. The only way to"fix" the quadriceps problem is to"fix" the cause (i.e. small intestine -overeating - change of habits, etc.).Because of this muscle/organ relationship, it is easy to see how onehabit can effect parts of the musclesystem which will ultimately effectthe entire system.

Ano the r impo r tan t r e l a t i onsh ipexists between a high sugar andstarch, in take and the sar tor ius muscle.
