Report of the National YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving Council: C. Eugene Keltner, Chairman

Solon Cousins, Executive Director of the National Council of YMCA’s said to our council that our fall

meeting at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado, “Progress initiates change,

changes indicate progress.” The council is involved in the change and the progress is beginning to show

in our competitive swimming and diving programs. The completion of our film “Everybody Swims,

Everybody Wins”, donated by the Coca-Cola Company and Speedo International is a great step toward

great progress. The introduction of our new swimming rules and a new text for the Coaches Certification

is evidence of progress. The involvement of more and more layman in the total concept of “It starts with

me” is strengthening the values education program across the country in swimming and diving.

New members representing allied bodies to swimming and diving from the National Collegiate Athletic

Association, National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association, and United States Swimming, will

encourage our council toward greater progress in meeting the challenge of change in the aquatic world

today.

Our National Council on Swimming and Diving Coaches Association also had gone through a major

change in its concepts toward progress as well as the introduction of masters swimming into the council’s

program. More and more every day, out communications network is bringing us closer together toward

implementation of change which is implementing tremendous progress. These National Championships

for Swimming and Diving are merely the tip of the iceberg of what is happening in our total program.

Congratulate yourselves! You deserve it!

1981 Awards and Recognitions

Awards and Recognitions that were presented at the 1981 National YMCA Swimming and Diving

Championship Meet were as follows:

The Eastern Airlines Annual Outstanding YMCA Swimmer Participant Award This award is presented annually at the National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championships

to the young woman and man who best exemplify the ideals of the YMCA competitive

swimming and diving and the characteristics of a true champion. Each recipient gets a 16-inch

trophy to keep. The 36-inch trophy will remain at the International Swimming Hall of Fame and

names of the recipients will be added to it each year.

This is not intended to be a high point award, but rather a tribute to two young YMCA athletes

who stand head and shoulders above the rest of the pack by virtue of attitude, team spirit and

dedication to their sport and who provide encouragement, inspiration and guidance to those

whose lives they touch.

The recipients for 1981 were Michelle Merchant and Dirk Marshall. Michelle of the the Dad’s

Club YMCA in Houston, Texas was not only an outstanding swimmer but was described as “one

of those rare persons who is always very busy but can find time to help anyone who is in need.”

She was “an inspiration to her team, a highly respected competitor, and a fine example for

other swimmers” among many other accolades.

Dirk Marshall of the Johnson County YMCA in Shawnee Mission, Kansas was a well-rounded

athlete, academically inclined, and a well-respected leader among his peers. “Honesty”

“Considerate” and “Humble” were words used to describe Dirk. He was “a young man who really

lived the YMCA swimming philosophy”.
