The Year of Change The 1985 school year was a

year of changes for the cadet corps. For example, some of the changes were the abolition of the rat-line and push-ups. Col. Eugene Fluke became the new PMS and First Sergeant Robert McDaniels was promoted to Sergeant Major. An old parade was reinstated and a new review parade was introduced for visiting dignitaries. A fitted blues coat and a belt for the blues were introduced. The personal and room inspections were given a new SOP. Personal inspection was rotated by days through company and battalion staffs. The new SOP for Saturday involves the new Wcntworth blanket for stripped bed inspec-

tions. As a part of the Second

Century Development Program, the arms room in Foxtrot was transferred to the Joe Busby Armory in the new building. Another part was the construction of a fountain in front of the Administration building. One change that affected the cadet corps drastically was the introduction of a new P.T. program from Major Gwinn. To the dismay of many cadets, smoking was abolished throughout the campus except for the cadets' rooms.

With these changes, the future of our school has been considerable brightened.

When Paul Swanson came to Wentworth, he had no friends. He would get points off on personal inspection. While the year progressed, he got better at everything. Paul had one of the best big brothers, Lt. J. B. Meyer. Paul would have shoe shining contests and would always win. He joined football and played his hardest. When skateboarding started, he had his skateboard ready. Paul started getting best cadet on personal inspection and best room on Sunday inspection. When I (Pierce Williams) heard of my friend's death, I cried.

H.S. Football The 1984 Wentworth Dragons high

school football team was led to a 5-3 record by Coach Gwinn and his coaching staff. The Dragons started slowly but won four of their last five games and just missed making the state playoffs. The Dragons won the Tri-Mil Championship by defeating Kemper and MMA.

Scott Anderson, Bill Sellers, Frank Ayres, Jay Maggard, Todd Klemm, and Lance McDonald were all named to the CRC All Conference Team. Also, all, except Ayres, were named to the second team All-District squad.

With many underclassmen returning, the success of this year's squad should carry over into next season.

J.C. Soccer This year's junior college soccer

team started with a few talented soccer players like Craig Curry, forward; Donald Dellinger, forward; Michael Eggleston, forward; Edward Kirk, right halfback; Eric Winton, goalkeeper. The team practiced their soccer skills and tried to work together, but it just wasn't right. This was proven when they were defeated by Mid-America Nazarene, 0-6. The Dragons put forth an effort to work on their fundamentals and finally started to look like a team. In their second attempt for a victory they were beaten by Longview College, 1-4. The game, in a way, was also something to write home about because they scored their first and only point in the season.

The highlight of the 1984-85 soccer season was defeating Kemper in overtime 3-2. The team ended with a 2-6-1 record and lost three games by one or two goals. The team's most valuable player who led the team in scoring and had at least one goal in every game was Al-Arfaj. The team will return over three-fourths of its players and should be really competitive next season.

Junior High Football The Wentworth Junior High foot

ball team began its quest for the CRC championship with a convincing 42-6 victory over Braymer. Bickely scored the first TD of the season on a 70 yard punt and scored another later in the first quarter.

In the second game the Wentworth Junior High team toolc a very hard earned 8-0 victory over a scrappy and determined Orrick team.

With the victory over Orrick, Wentworth hosted the winner of the Southern Division for the CRC championship. Wentworth finished as the only unbeaten team during the preliminary rounds.

The visiting Norborne team defeated the Dragons in a 12-8 thriller that went right down to the wire. The passing combination of Zazzara to Bowen had been extremely successful all season.

Junior High Basketball

The junior high baslcetball team finished their regular season with a 1-5 record.

In the first game against Orrick the Dragons were very nervous. With two minutes left in the game the Dragons had a two-point lead but lost the game in the final seconds 44-42.

The Dragons lost a hair-raising game against Polo in overtime. Polo jumped out to a two-point lead early in the two-minute period. The Dragons controlled the ball for the rest of the game but were unable to score. The final score was 33-32. The Wentworth Dragons junior high basketball team took first place honors in the CRC tournament. The Dragons hosted the tournament in which seven teams competed.

In the championship game Wentworth defeated fifth ranked Braymer for the CRC title. Scoring was dead-even until the fourth quarter, in which the Dragons outscored the Bobcats 12-7.

Page 50: 1985 - Wentworth Military Academy & College

Under the direction of Capt. Jay Allard, the Wentworth J.C. basketball team had a record of 4-19. Although their record wasn't very impressive, the junior college team lost some games that could have gone either way.

The leading scorer on this year's team was Al Owens. David Clutts and Bobby Smith were also considered to be offensive threats and were also the top rebounders. Doug Nikolai and Todd Harless completed the starting five, and their steady defense anchored the team. Darcy Engeman, Bill Morgan, Mark McCarter, and John Meyer helped the team.

The highlight of the year came during the Cross State Conference Tournament. The Wentworth team put together one of its best games to post a 22 point win over Linn Tech. The championship game was played against a tough St. Paul team. The Dragons played well but came up on the short end of the score. Owens was selected to the all-tournament team.

The 1984-85 Wcntworth Red Dragons high school basketball team had a very disappointing season, finishing with a record of 4-18.

Wentworth had an unstable starting lineup. Jeff Hussey, Bill Sellers, Mike Krueger and Frank Ayres were the regular starters, but the fifth slot was open throughout the season.

As a team Wentworth shot 53% from the charity line. Bill Sellers averaged 11.1 per game. Jeff Hussey averaged 10.6 per game. Mike Kruger led the team in free throw percentage at 60% from the charity line.

The Dragons did have a few highlights during the season. Wentworth beat Kemper twice by scores of 45-26 and 49-40. They also beat Polo 42-41 and Hardin Central 50-33. Hussey was named to the All-Tournament team at the CRC Preseason Tournament. Sellers was named to the CRC All Conference squad, and Ayres received Honorable Mention.

This year's swim team greatly improved since the beginning of the season. The team went through many changes. They lost many swimmers, but gained some good swimmers, too. This year's captains were Rog Jaswal and Bryce Godard. The coach was Capt. Dave Johnsen. His assistants were college students Dave Watson, Jack Delmonte, and John Birkett, These four people helped tremendously to boost the team's spirit and drive them forward.

The team had several outstanding members. The strongest swimmers in Individual events were Bill Loveall in the 500 yard freestyle and Rog Jaswal in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard individual medley. The medley relay consisted of Loveall In the backstroke, Bryce Godard in the breaststroke, Mark Thompson In the butterfly and Joe Padon in the freestyle. The free relay consisted of Loveall, Padon, Godard, and Jaswal.

J.C. Baseball With only three sophomores on the

team, the junior college baseball team became most reliant on the experience and skill of the freshmen. Coach AUard found it necessary to use his bench to fill positions. As a result, the Dragons ended their season with a 2-8 record. However, every game was closely played even if the scores did not reflect it. The Dragons' major triumph came at the end of the season when they played Kemper in a doubleheader. The Dragons were victorious in both games*

The high school tracic team started out slowly this year but finished the season very strongly. In the CRC indoor track meet Wentworth finished 4th out of 7 teams competing. The track team then had a close loss to Hardin and another to MMA. After those losses Wentworth got back on the winning track with a second place finish in a triangular meet at Grain Valley, a strong 5th place finish at the Grain Valley Invitational and a very strong showing at the Smithville relay. Wentworth then went on to place 1st in the Barstow Quint meet, a 2nd place finish In the CRC outdoor meet and winning the Tri Mil crown against arch rivals Kemper and MMA.

J.C. Tennis The 1985 Junior College tennis

season was more active than last year's, both from the standpoint of having played two more teams (Kemper and St. Paul) and from being able to play one more match. Unfortunately, the record posted was four losses and one tie.

When it was time to get the job done, Headquarters did it and did it well. Headquarters has a sense of pride that says, "Can do, will do, get it done/'

If Headquarters thinks back to the beginning of the year, they think of much fun: Cain put his leggings on backwards and fell down twice during parade; Lt. Wasilewski told everybody to "chine your choes and don't forget to chave"; Throckmorton's room got moved around twice while he was out; Lt. Kirk made Tubbert pick up all those newspapers; Haywood went AWOL eight times and never really succeeded; Col. Altendorf had to come out into the hails after taps to quiet the company staff; Capt. Clutts made Tubbert low crawl through the halls. Remember losing Lt, Morris to Charlie Company; also, the "Guidon squad" and all the steak dinners. Furthermore, how about when Headquarters went to its first band trip to Higginsville and marched down the street with its first-place trophy.

Yes, we had our bad times and our good times, but we always came out as the best. Long live the spirit and pride of Headquarters Company . . . Headquarters # 1 .

Remember Hogw

As students from around the country loaded up and headed toward Wentworth Military Academy, little did they know what incidents would occur during the next nine months. Some will be remembered forever. ACT I: SCENE ONE

We find two Alpha cadets reminiscing about the past. Dicky: Hey, Gaetano, remember the times when we first

arrived at Wentworth, the rat line and pushups. Gaetano: That was rough. We got off easy when they

eliminated the rat line along with the push-ups. We rats really heard it from the old boys who had to do it last year. It was only fair that we should carry on the tradition as the 104th year cadets had.

Dicky: Speaking of push-ups, just think of how big Hormovitis's arms would have been had push-ups remained all year.

Gaetano: Yeah, and who could forget "Hormovitis, get up Hormone . . .1"

Dicky: Remember my old roommate Ed Clark and his ordeal with the new rat from Penn.

Gaetano: Yeah, that guy really gave Clark his dollars' worth and sent him on a short ride. I remember a ride the whole company rode.

Dicky: Catching a wave! That night Alpha was awakened by the biggest wave to hit Missouri. Everyone grabbed their mops and mopped the halls to the sounds of the Beach Boys.

Gaetano: Speaking of changes, how about the officer changes. That's when Armstrong, Campbell and Curry moved up to Alpha, and your roommate Shields was promoted to Sgt. Major.

Dicky: Things would never be the same, especially for Bloustine, who pouted around believing Bosshard took his staff position. Who could forget Green's change of rank! As J,B. Meyer and Morgan put it. "He couldn't

Garrls speaks. Alpha listens. A. Al-Rasheed 73

Page 74: 1985 - Wentworth Military Academy & College

drive 55!" Gaetano: I don't think anyone will forget Col. Fluke taking

over as PMS and bettering the corps. He began with a road march and carried through with CPR classes and the three mile run.

Dicky: Speaking of the road march, it was just after that when "Dude" was dismissed.

Gaetano: Dude? His name was Slagle! Dicky: Whatever. Gaetano: Whatever! I think everyone should be

remembered by his correct name. Do you want us to remember you by Dicky Lee Roth or David Lee Erhard?

Dicky: Okay, I get the point, I guess Brad didn't like being called Bradshaw. Just like the other Alpha nicknames such as Maclevitis, Blinky, Roadie, Bones, Wimpton, and your favorite, Guido!

Gaetano: I guess the last fond memory wc had was taking the beaches of flooded Alpha down to the sun soaked practice field.

Dicky: I'll say it wasn't such a bad year after all. At least we have these good memories to look back on!

Lt Morris was gentle with the ladies.

Well, Charlie, the year has finally ended. I think it was a pretty good year even with the setbacks. Flexibility was the name of the game; you had to be flexible this year — losing a company commander and a platoon leader and having to train new ones; losing a PMS and trying to avoid the new one. Face it. Charlie had its fair share of setbacks!

But the positive far outweighs the negative: platoon competition to keep Kenton and Mahoney at each other's throats; Lt. Morris's "torpedo'* drills with his red spinner whistle; the beginning of a rock and roll band in the basement; Lt. Kim's 3rd CQ excess parties to reward our excess jockies on their standing-out performance; "the captain's keychain" for guys who couldn't remember their keys; getting Godhelp ready for Airborne school by dropping him from floor to floor; the Wednesday night "shine parties" to have everyone looking ?good? for drill on Thursday; the call everyone had memorized for 0623, "1st Sgt., get your waiters to waiter duty."; the whole company running after some guy who had a gun (why didn't someone wake me up?); just little things that helped to break up the boring cycle of — wake up: formation: class: formation: class: formation: PT: formation: CQ's: sleep, for most of us (right, Spiva?). You are the best company, Charlie. Thank you.

Delta has come a long way since the beginning of the year. We are still hanging tough. As the year continued^ we had a staff change which filled the vacant XO spot with Lt. Baiz. The new cadets learned responsibilities and passed them on to those cadets coming in at semester.

Different activities and company competitions have taken place in which Delta has done a super job. We won the homecoming float competition and the pumpkin-cutting contest and came in second in the ugly-man contest.

Being the company commander of Delta has built confidence in myself and has helped prepare me as a second lieutenant In the United States Army.

The Wentworth Honor Guard this year has been at its best — always guarding the exits at dances, escorting the VIP's, and making sure everybody is on campus by taps. Homecoming Weekend

To start off the Homecoming weekend, we had our traditional bonfire rally Friday night. Unfortunately, it had rained the day before and it took Scott Anderson a while to start the fire. The next day the battalion had a parade through Lexington which ended at the stadium. The Homecoming Queen was announced and to no one's surprise Missy McDonald won.

We won the first Homecoming game in five years with a score of 16 to 14 against Braymer.

The Homecoming weekend featured a reunion of all Headquarters Old Boys. They pulled their instruments out, dusted them off, and got back into the swing of things. The Old Boys gave a special performance during the halftime of the game.

Later that night the Homecoming dance went into full action. To everyone's regret, the dance ended too soon; the cadets had to go back to the barracks, and the girls to go back home on the bus.

Alumni welcomed In the student union.

Fall Parents' Weekend Fall Parents' Weekend went

smoothly this year except for a little rain. Friday evening there was a football game against Kemper which Wentworth won 40-0. Then the following morning parents and teachers met for parent/teacher conferences. Cadets and their parents went to each of the cadets' classes, and the parents were informed about how the class operated and also the cadets' grades.

That afternoon in the fieldhouse, the annual Dad's Day Drill was held. This is when the fathers fall-out on the drill floor into a giant platoon and march until all have been disqualified except for one. The lucky father this year was Robert Morgan, winner for the second time and father of cadet 1st Lt. Bill Morgan. Saturday night in the chapel the community and Wentworth guests were invited to see a performance of Mark Twain's life.

The weekend was topped off with the Sunday afternoon dress parade and a performance by the band and the Honor Guard.

Allied Officers and Generals Visit WMA

Every year on a Sunday the Allied officers visit WMA's campus. When they arrive, cadets are assigned to guide each officer and his family around the campus. While here, Col. Sellers, Jr., formally greets them. Then they have dinner in the mess hall and later review the Sunday dress parade.

The officers come from around the world to attend the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. These officers are the best from their country. They are training for a general staff position.

Lieutenant General Benjamin Bellis, currently the President of the Falcon Foundation, and Lieutenant General A.P. Clark, the current secretary for the Falcon Foundation, came to Wentworth to honor four of Wentworth's finest cadets who each have been awarded one of the Falcon Foundation Scholarships. General Bellis presented Gene Heuschel, III, Doug Nikolai, David Smith, and Eric Winton with scholarships that will help these young men prepare to seek admission Into the United States Air Force Academy and a career in the Air Force.

Military Ball Weekend

Military ball and spring parents ' weekend started Friday night with the talent show that ranged from comedy to music. The following morning cadets and parents had a treeplanting and afterwards scholastic visitations. Then they had lunch in the mess hall. Later there was an awards assembly in the chapel and a military ball practice. That night the cadet officers and their dates had an officers' banquet in the student union. Then there was the military ball!

The next morning parents attended church with their sons. After church most parents checked their sons out to dine elsewhere. That afternoon there was a performance by the Honor Guard and the band. Then there was parade. After parade parents could check their sons out until taps.

CPR and the Bivouac The bivouac aids the military depart

ment on decisions of leadership skills learned by the corps. Areas watched are troop leading procedure, night patrolling and land navigation. Other skills observed are pitching pup tents and practicing usage of chain-of-command. While on night maneuvers, noise and light discipline skills are checked in each company.

The first weekend after Spring Break, the corps underwent Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training. Col. Sellers thought it would be good if the whole corps learned how to save the life of a choking or heart attack victim, so he called in about fifty instructors from the Kansas City Red Cross.

The training took place in the field-house and lasted about four hours. Everyone learned mouth-to-mouth breathing techniques and the proper way to administer back and chest blows.

At the end of our training, everyone who qualified received a certification card which stated that they had qualified as a CPR trainee.
