And Away We Go Kilmurry, Golden win grab St. Pot's 10K Handicap race Whether it was the luck of the Irish or our own, the running season opened in fine style as 400 contestants turned up for the St. Patrick's Day Road Races at FDR Park. Donohue's prize was two tickets to Ireland, courtesy of Aer Lingus. The races themselves were exciting. As many as eight runners were poised for a win in the men's lOK by the time the lead pack passed the halfway mark. In the end, it was Geier, a former Connecticut high school cross country champion, who bested Neil Buckley (New Fairfield) and Jim Kelly Smith (Port Ewen). Only 10 seconds separated the three, with Geier on top by three over Buckley in 33 minutes, 47 seconds. Jorgensen allowed last year's Grand Prix champion Nancy Laun to set the early pace in the ladies' division, but when the Chappaquldian faltered in the second half, J o r g e n s e n w a s o n - f o r m t o s e i z e t h e opportunity. Perhaps, though, it is only because his members are on the pecunarious side, rather than that his administrative staff is beyond reproach. Case in point is the recent handicap race run at FDR Park in Yorktown. Originally scheduled as a five miler, it was changed to a lOK (6.2 miles) at the last moment: report is that the change was made when the race director, who happened also to be the handicapper, was a bit disgruntled when no money was offered him by the runners for a better handicap. Cheap they might have been, but they were not completely puritanical. Tony Galfano submitted $200 of Monopoly money and an expired credit card; Gary Steinel offered to send a postcard from his upcoming trip to Scotland and assured the official that a check was in the mail to cover his benevolence - he withdrew it after he saw his handicap; Owen McCrudden passed on a Scottish hat he had worn only 42 times, then didn't run when he saw his handicap. The Jablonskis were quite prominent,as no fewer than five of the Mahopacfamily competed. They were not alone, asother families Joined in the fray:Brennans (Mt. Kisco), Powers (Brewstec),Kennedys (Putnam Valley)-, Galfanos(Peekskill), Oxmans (Yorktown), and theDillons of Lake Carmel to name a few.Several youngsters came in for a round ofapplause, but none more than four year-oldBryan Trout of Peekskill, who finished thedeuce with an ear- popping grin.

And while we recognized the effortsof the winners, a tip of the hat also tothe other end of the pack: John Keegan(Thornwood) in the IQK and YorktownersNadine Stein and Bonnie Werbell in the funrun. Although they may not have set anyspeed records, the fact remains that theycompleted the course - that's all thatc o u n t s . C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s .

O n e p a i n f u l r e a s o n f o r t h i sun fo r t una te s i t ua t i on i s t ha t t hecompetitive aspect of race day is carriedover to many, and sometimes all, othertraining days. Those hard, anaerobic daysmust be restricted. There must be asignificant number of weeks, or evenmonths, where there is no hard running. That way, you build health as well asfitness. The winter is a good time todevelop this healthy "base". I f doneproperly - three months of easy runningfor example - racing at the end of thisperiod usually results in a PR, It wasgood to see a number of people on March 16r u n n i n g P R ' s .

We have been told that exercise canmake us physiologically younger. Thetruth is, it can. Why are so many of therunners in our club injured? Why shouldpeople be getting less healthy as they e a r s g o b y ? We m u s t o v e r c o m e o u raddiction not only to the idea that if alittle is good, a lot is bet'ter, but alsoto the idea of "no pain; no gain". Wemust raise our level of health as well aso u r l e v e l o f fi t n e s s .

Stop. Why are you running? Askyourself that question. Now try to answeri t h o n e s t l y.
