    defeat of th e Marathas a t Panipat in 1761. The Mu gh ul Empire

    was b y then no longer a n eff ect ive power. Ahmad Shah proved,

    however, unable t o consolidate h i s gains. His Afg ha n tr ibesmen

    were too indiv idual ist ic, too unsophist icated an d ign ora nt: the y

    knew how to conquer but no t how to rule. Nevertheless, when

    he died

    1773, th e va st D ur ra ni Empire extended ov er

    present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan ( inc luding Baluchis tan to

    the sea), Kashmir, as well as pa rt s o f India, I r a n and Soviet

    rurkestan. B u t even he had had to re l in quish some of h i s

    conquests, notably central Punjab to th e Sikhs whi ls t reta ini ng

    Peshawar and th e n o rt he r n Punjab.

    Dur i ng the re ign o f h i s son, Ti mu r Shah, th e Sikhs star ted

    to nibble at the Afghan possessions

    th e Punjab, whi le Sind

    succeeded

    Timur Shah moved his c apital fro m Kandahar to Kabul, a more

    central locat ion both pol i t ica l ly an d strategical ly, an d a t h i s

    1793 the Empire was sti l l of considerable extent.

    Payindah Khan?

    Zaman Shah (1793-1800), t he f i f th son of T im ur Shah, was

    fortunate enough to be in Kabul when h is father died and w i th

    the backing o f Payindah Khan succeeded to th e throne. Payin dah

    Khan was rewarded

    by

    being made v iz ier o r ch ief min is ter. B u t

    soon the new K in g was attacked b y one disappointed br ot he r

    from Kandahar and later

    by

    ano the r, Shah Mahmud, from Herat.

    Having dealt wi th both, he conducted desu lto ry campaigns

    Punjab but never advanced beyond Lahore. Ineffect ive th oug h

    they were, they raised t he spectre o f th e devas t ing rai ds of

    Ahmad Shah s formidable Afg han horsemen f o r t y years before
