TACONIC ROAD RUNNERS TAKE TO BOSTONb y : To n y G a l f a n oThe Boston Marathon was a first for myself and several other Taconic members. There

were several problems at the start for the wheelchair and elite racers, but this hadno effect on my race. It was a slow start, but that has always been the case in Boston.Among our small group of first timers were John Hallinan (2:58), Helen Gordon (3:23),Richard Fennelly (3:06), Glen McCarthy (2:59), Melanie Mulvihill (3:45), Kate Glynn(3:50) and myself (2:55). Two other club members who ran, although not for the firsttime, were Bob Hermesch (2:57) and Gary Struve (2:49). Many hours were spent, mostlyin cold weather, training and plotting for Boston. Heartbreak Hill became a mountainin our minds, but Heartbreak Hill was no heartbreaker.** On most of our training runs, much tougher hils are encountered. I came away from Boston with a sense of pride atbeing in a race with such a long history. Maybe if IM been running for 91 years, itwouldn't be as exciting, but as a first timer it really satisfied me.We all got words of wisdom from many who had previously run Boston. Like New York,Boston is a "people's race" and the crowd support was great. However, nothing I knowof compares with the ladies of Wellesley College. You feel like you are runningthrough a tunnel of screaming college women as they force you almost to single filethrough Wel les ley.I was able to make Boston a pleasant experience; I flew up from Westchester County Airport on a commuter plane that sounded like my washing machine, and was able to stay inEast Boston with relatives and friends. Monday came, and although not planned, JohnHallinan, Rich Fennelly and I met and passed a few hours before the start of the race. All the training and planning was put to good use;only towards the last couple ofmiles did I start to wish it were all over. I have my Boston medal and I treasureit as ray biggest accomplishment this year.

No bones about it—you people out there are great; the club is great, and our racesare great. Runners know that from safety pins to splits to a timely award ceremony, when Taconic puts on a race it will be done right. I am very fortunate to be thepres of a group like you. I will need some assistance at Fr. Mooney on July 4th andDebbie Schramm on July 25th. Contact the designated race coordinators if you can help. The pentathlon was reborn under the direction of Gary Steinel and 14 hardy soulsparticipated, and each one a winner. The time and energy, not to mention the moneyIt cost Gary was donated to the club. Thanks, Gary, it's most appreciated!!Howie Bashant, ex-champion, former running great and charter member, one of the club'soldest living relics, is on the comeback scene. He took 2nd place in the Master's Divisionof the the Brooklyn Pub Run and he doesn't even drink! Howie has again stepped up tobecome race director of his own Biathlon being held August 2nd at Lake Sycamore, Mahopac. In conjunction with this event, by popular demand, will be the TRRC picnic. So putaside the date on your calendar right now for a fun-filled action-packed day. Bringthe family. There will be a tug-o-war, softball games (parents vs. children), basketball, swimming, etc. There will also be a surprise special guest star singer who willmake a rare appearance to entertain us with his lyrical voice and old tunes. (Hisfavorite is "Stout-Hearted Men"—I will say no more.) The club will provide beer, winesoda, and ice, you br ing the rest . A l l th is a t no cost to members—such a deal ! !Also coming up are the summer track series, the 15th running of the Fr. John P. MooneyMemorial Run, and the Jan Peek lOK on July 12th. This will be the 10th running of thisclassic, and Race Director John Burns expects 1000 participants. Finally, what's on your mind? How about some communication about what you like and don'tl i ke? I f you a re se r i ous , come to t he mee t i ng and we can a l l l i s t en t o i t . I sn ' t t ha tw h a t m e e t i n g s a r e f o r ?

NORTH COUNTY NEWS MINI-MARATHON lOK - TEN YEARS LATER

I worked the finish line at this year's North County News Race - did not run itas I had the first year, and many years thereafter (I think I only missed one ortwo) , and i t was a t ime o f reflec t i on .

There^were many people running that first race that 1 did not know, but were infact "future friends" ~ Jeannie and Steve Arnett, Pete Corsino, Harry Neeson,to name a few. In that race, when it was still a thrill for me to break ten-minute miles 1 remember the heat, 1 remember how tough the course was (it wasonly my second race ever), and 1 remember asking my family to come with mebecause 1 wouldn't know anyone else there. How strange this all seems now.

This race is one of my favorites because it seems there is a long stretchbetween the St. Patrick's Day race (now filled in by the Boston Alternative)which many people run in, and this one. The North County News Race is usually ona warm day, and it seems everyone in the club is back, especially those wehaven t seen much of all winter. The music, the beer and food, and the anticipation of summertime, when we seem to get together more, all gets starteda t t h i s r a c e .

It was great to see my co-editor, Linda Geppert, win the women's division.While she has done this a few times before, this was the first time 1 wasa c t u a l l y a t t h e fi n i s h l i n e t o c h e e r h e r i n .

This race made me reflect how my feelings about running have changed—at thatfirst^race, any time 1 saw a local race, 1 just to be there running. Now1 don t mind doing my run early in the morning, and coming to the race to helpout, to enjoy my friend's struggles and victories, and to "be with" the peoplein the club. Running has become more than a hobby — it's really a part of my

Congratulations to all of you who finished this demanding, hilly course — I'llsee you there next year!!

SHELTER ISLAND: Alan Marmor should get a commission from the organizers of the ShelterIsland lOK - he is the "spokesperson" for this race in the area. Each year the groupof TRRC members who make the long trip out to the end of Long Island grows in numbers, thanks mainly to Alan's promotional efforts, This year, Alan ran 40:11, Howie 40-15Kevin Wynne 31:40, Judy Pickert 39:30, Vic Chase 42:30, and Steve Corvin 45:30. Again]Alan said it is a wonderful event, and see him in March if you want to make the tripout there^in early June next year. 1 left Brian Wheaton for the last because he ranthe race the way the English do it". Brian had a PR of 38:08, which was wonderful untilwe found out the reason - he had brought only two right shoes, forcing him to borrowan extra pair of Kevin Wynne's shoes. No wonder he was so fast!!

LONG ISLAND RESULTS: 1/2 Marathon: Alan Marmor, 1:33; Noel Lazarus 1:35 (PR!)Marathon:Don Villeneuve, 3:14; Brian Wheaton (with his own shoes)3:06; Willie Voll, 3:18; John Vol1, 3:21; Scott Sage, 4:08 (firstM a r a t h o n ) .
