Taconic Running Life JANUARY, 1988 ? 5 D R O P B Y F O R FALL FESTIVAL This race, unofficially nicknamed "The Chappaqua Alternative" actually did not need to fill the gap as the Chappaqua lOK was held, with last-minute new sponsorship. There was also a 5K run at SUNY Purhcase. Nonetheless, a group of enthusiastic runners turned our for the lOK and 2-miler at FDR Park. A rainy and cold morning threatened to make for an unpleasant experience, but the rain stopped, leaving ideal conditions (except for the (a#$%$//(3! ! hills), Despite the size of the field, competition was fierce. A few of the "fun runners" who claimed to be just "running through" two miles had some spectacular times. The awards ceremony was livened up by the Scottish Wit and Wisdom of Sandy McTavish: Jack Brennan's daughter, placing first in her age group, was advised to "go home and show your father what a gold medal looks like." Sharon Chase, mother of Abbe, was introduced as her "older sister," and a long-sought-after experience was missed by one Carmelo Roldan—he placed as first master in the two miler, and had left before claiming his award!! Having run a marathon in the spring, I optedto be a spectator at this year's New York CityMarathon. The crowds were sparser andquieter there, so Owen and I figured we wouldfil l in. I t was quite an experience fol lowinghim down to the Bronx—a man who has no ideathat cars have d i rect ional s ignals, and sometimes, as if uncertain as to which way to go,pauses in the middle of an intersection, lookinga r o u n d i n a l l d i r e c t i o n s a s c a r s b e a r d o w n o n u sa f te r the l igh t has changed! HARRY CHAPIN MEMORIAL RACE

The Harry Chapin Memorial Race was held on a beautiful "Indian Summer" day, 10/18,about six weeks before what would have been Harry's 45th birthday, December 7th.In fact, on Dec. 7, Harry posthumously earned the Congressional Medal of Honor forh is e f fo r ts in the campa ign aga ins t wor ld hunger. Har ry ' s ta len t and concern fo rhis fellow humans is sorely missed by many of us.

TRRC members did well on the challenging course, which winds its way across Croton Damand park, and is one of the more scenic courses around. It was a laconic sweep for thewomen as Susan Then (41:24) won the race, followed by Nancy Laun (43:28) and BarbroThelemarck (43:45), second and third places respectively. Susan Jacobsen (43:57) andKate Glynn (45:46) placed in their age groups, 30-39 and 40-49. Among the men, TRRCmembers were in the top of the field as Jim Meadows (32:25), Doug Miller (35:08) andBob Hermesch (35:30) took 2nd, 4th and 5th overall. Among the "mature" set, JerryTaub (42:01) edged out Elton Robinson (42:38) for 2nd and 3rd place among the 50-59s.Among the "even more mature" group. Pierce Brennan took the honors in the 60+ categorywith a commendable 44:17, and Jack Burns took second place in a time of 46:00.

Other club members fared well: Bob and Mary Lund each ran, with a baby (Bob's in acar r iage, Mary 's no t a r r i ved ye t ) . Jerry recently bad a tremendous accomplishment, in completing the 25th annual JFK Memorial50-Mike Hike-and-Run in Cumberland Valley, Maryland on November 21. According to Jerry, entrants are permitted to hike and run, in whatever combination they wished (only the topfew runners ac tua l ly ran the whole th ing) .

This particular race started in cold, snowy, windy conditions (unusual weather for Maryl a n d i n l a t e N o v e m b e r ) . J e r r y d e s c r i b e d t h e c o u r s e : t h e fi r s t t h i r d o f t h e r a c e i s r u non the Appalachian Trai l , an impossib ly rocky, narrow di r t path which ends in a sheercliff into which "switchbacks" have been cut, which, for the uninformed, are zig-zagtrails cut into the face of the cliff. If you manage this first leg without a sprainedankle or a fatal plunge, you can meet your support crew at sixteen miles. The second legof the course runs along a firm, flat, dirt towpath along the C & 0 Canal. Jerry callsthis a major improvement over the Appalachian Trail, but nevertheless the temperaturenever broke 32 degrees and a headwind buffetted the runners the entire way. The lastleg, if you're still with it, is from mile 42-50, consisting of rolling hills. The strategy most runners employ in completing an event of this distance is to run some, walk some, and eat a lot of food. Jerry said it was reminiscent of the road relay to seeso many support crews along the way. Also, extra running clothes were needed in casesomething got soaking wet, as well as a change of shoes, hats, etc. How, I asked, does one train for such an event? Jerry did, in preparation, two marathons, one Sybil Ludington, and actually never got over 50 miles a week during his training period(shades of Don Villeneuve, who, in fact, got Jerry the application for this event). Asimportant was his "psyche" training—reading accounts of Triathlons, Biking across America, and the "I can do it" mind set which is a must in an event such as this one. Also importantis pace. Jerry never (until the last eight miles) ran a second faster than the pace we allhave which we feel can "go on forever."How did he do? Jerry finished in a commendable 9 hours and eleven minutes, which translates to a 11:07 per mile pace, which varied greatly, he stated, as he walked on manyhills, from 8:36 per mile to 11:48 per mile. He placed 67th overall out of 295 finishers, which is not bad for an old guy.Attention all Sybil runners — will we see you at this one next year???
