Letter From The Ed.itor .November, 1988

Dear Readers,

I knew it was comming, but still the Auturnn crept u!, on padded. catts Da\rs.I awoke one cool crisp morning to fj-nd the summer endeC.A11 around the olace, the leaves rr'€t€ turnt-ng gold, red, and russet brown. The noble Black Oal'-s shake their limbs, droppj-ng acorns and leaves at random,lo create a wa:rn carpet to shelter next yearts seedli-ngs, and rrildflowers. The punpyts woolie fur keeps him warm, and the adults seeln to have sprouteCwinter coalsf overnight. This is m17 favorite time of vear, a time of preperation, trhen trees are cut'split, and stacked to provide fuel for the winter to cone. The dog houses arefll1ed rvith sweet srnelling-sEraw, which the dogs hollow out into cozy "nests."It is the time for bon-fires, hayrides, vrhen the l{arvest }4oon hangs huge, andyellow in the night sky, signaling the time to reap what we have sown. The field is olowed and dj-sced, ereating a nelr olace for the dogs to play;they frolic and leap, rnrith I'smokyil breaths trlring to outrun each other, andthe hint of the wioter vd-nd.Th:l-s is the tirne to reflect on good times, and nev'friends, and to cherish oldfriends, who have been with us through the good and the bad tines.I^lhat better tine than now, to bake apole nies, and to send a friend a card iustto say hello? It is a time for girring Thanks...for our famil-ies, our good friends, our health, and for our lovelv dogs. We tend to put aside more important things in the ftenzyof those spring and sumrnet shor.rs. Sometirires we forget to thank the people whohave helped us in some way, by lending an X-pen, or hol-ding a dog at ringsJ-defor us, or.just for being there to support our dogs at the shor,rsI know that I have been guilty of these lapses, and bet you have too.As we move into winter, and the }loliday season, try to make an effort to aidsomeone in need, and maybe to cheer a friend with the blues, enioy some qualitytime with your kids or spouse, start training that good obedience dog' who isnot being worked, and before you know it Spring will be here.Remember Club Elections are cormring up soon, and this is your ehancethe changes you rtant, and to put sonething back into the C1ub.Those of you who profess to love the breed can show your dedicationinvolved in the upcormning year, only if you do sonething about it.Those of you who hbve titled dogs in some way in 1988, donrt forgetthe imformation and scores to me for the club awards in February.Deadline is Januarl 10, L989. I will not make ohone ea1ls this yea-r.Please read the imformation in this issue about the award oualifieations. Thanks to those of you r,rho he1-ped to get out last monthts issue.BarbrBronson, Judy Deane, Larry Sisson, Sharon Dj-dckmann, I certainly appreeiateall your help.

Getting the sheets off the bed is a job in which she takes great del-ight- She

Actually, she lends fourof them, stand!.ng in the rniddle of the bed and trying to catch the sheet as ILl''r t. p,-!t if ,n- the bed. Natrrrally, she alst::arries her sllafe down tc thewasher iy C"titrg hold of whatewer hangs down. Pillou' cases are futt too, trying tt tt"tp iug them on the pillow just like I do, only she isn't as

Fixing a meal goes so much better with a black nose consLantly appearing atyorrr ulbor. Again, I send her on her way. buc two seconds later she is back

grirmiTg; villing to share the work , especially Eersting, in spite of my

irotestl. C"ttiig a rneal on the table is an advenLure sinee she started toir"fp. She'd help clean dishes willingly, but I don't want to put a strain on

her.

At first when I used the vacuun, onyx just avoided iE. Lately, howevef, she

has decided to check to make sure il is really picking up the dirt' she

stands clireetly in front of the vacuum and backs uP one step at a time as itcones forward, wagging her Cail and laughing. it takes more time no"t ti' run

the vacuurn, but f;m s,-,re the fact Chat it stays in one spot longer means it ispicking up more.

Dusting, which I don't do very often, is another place where she has decided

her sharp eyes are needed to insure *a good job. That black nose is right inthe middle of whatever I'm trying to"'wipe off. She even tries to take the

dust cloch and touch up where she thinks I've missed.

Any kind of sewing requires her attention. She ptrts her head in my 1ap to-

hold the piece stJady and checks to make sure th; button is on tight, or thatthe stitches are nice and even-

One evening she got annoyed with the bill paying chore' She kept trying Lo

take the p!r, froi my hand. I told her the bank wouldn't accept her signatureand she got so piq.rla that r^rhen I left for a moment to ansr^rer the telephone,

she ran off with the pen and chewed it up

Her newest chore is shaking out the throw rug by 1he front- door ' My car-pet isred and I managed to find a red throw rug j.,"t ty luck. The thing is so heavy

Chat I wash it by itself. That does not deter Onyx. Every time I turn my

back she has carried that throw rug off anci shook it' So far it is in irne

piece. I have complained vigorously about her exerting hersetf by takiug itoutside and shakioi it. l'ly protestl have not daurrted her enthusiasm for her
