Every year in Seville, during th e month of June , there takes place in

the c ity known as Triana, a festiva l known as the "Procession of the Dew"

in whi ch the best families participate. They make their entry in their co aches

following an im age of the Virgin Mary on a golden cart drawn by oxen and

accompanied by music. The people dance to the "soleare" and the "sequiJ ill a.

A drunkard setS of f firecrackers, adding to the confus ion . At th e sound of

the flutes and drums which announce the process ion, all dancing ceases.A religious th eme is heard and breaks forth mingling with th e pealing of thechurch bells and the strai ns of the Royal March. The procession passes andas it recedes , the festivit ies resume, but at length they fade away.

Variations on America

John Zdechlik(1937- )

Charles Ives(1874-1954)

Transcribed by Wm. RhoadsBased on the orch. version by Wm . Schuman

"Variations on A m ~ r i c a " is (! witty. irreverent piece for or "an whichwas composoo in 189 t. According {O ives' b i o ~ r a p h e r s . Henry and SidneyCowetl, It was played by Ives in organ recitals In Danbury and inBrewster, New York in the same year. His father would not let him playsome of the pages in the Brewster concert because they had canons intwo keys at once that proved to be unsuited to performance in church:they made the boys "laugh out and get noisy." William Schuman wrotea remarkably effective orchestra transcription of this work in 1964 andit is this version upon which Witliam Rhoads based his equally effectivehand transcription.

Lincoln Portrait

Anthony Turner, Narrator

Aaron Coplandarr. by Walter Beeler

Lincoln Portrait, commissioned by Andre Kostelanetz, was first performed by

the Cincinnati Symphony on May 14 , 1942. The composer was asked to do a

musical portrait of a notable American. As Copland later wrote: "I startedthinking of a statesman. Washington? Couldn't imagine it--too st iff and

formal. But Lincoln appealed very much to me. I found quotations of Lincoln

that I thought would make him come more alive for an audience and that gave

me the idea of using a speaker. I did not intend the Portrait to be a patriotic

gesture. It is just a portrait of Lincoln, pure and simple, meant for

a large audience and special occasions. "

Wind Ensemble

Tulsa Don GillisA ~ S y m p Portrait in Oil", this rhapsody depicts various eventsassociated with the history of the city. A hoedown, a parade, and

even the bringing in of an oil " ~ u s h e r " are woven together in

this colorful piece.

I.Blessed are they that mourn , for they shall have comfort. (Matthew 5:4)

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Who goeth forth and weepeth, andbea.reth precious seed, shall doubtless return with joy and bring his sheaves withhim . (Psalm 126:5-6)

II .Behold. all flesh is as the grass, and all the goodliness of man is as the flower o

grass; for 10, the grass with ' reth, and the flower thereof decayeth. (I Peter 1:24

Now. therefore, be patient, 0 my brethren, uoto the coming of Christ.(James 5:7)

See how the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath longpatience for it, until he receive the early rain and the latter rain. So be yepatient. (I Peter I: 25)

But yet the Lord's word standeth forevermore. The redeemed of the Lord shal

return again and come rejoicing unto Zion; gladness, joy everlasting upon theirheads shall be; joy and gladness, these shall be their portion, and tears andsighing shall flee from them. (Isaiah 35: 10)

Ill.Lord, teach me to know the measure of my days on earth , to consider my frailtythat I must perish. Surely, all my days here are as an handbreadth to Thee, andmy lifetime is as naught to Thee.

Verily mankind walketh in a vain show, and their best state is vanity. Man

passeth away like a shadow. he is disquieted in vain, he heapeth up riches, andcannot tell who shall gather them. Now, Lord, 0 what do I wait for? My hopeis in Thee. (Psalm 39:4-7)

But the righteous sould are in the hand of God, nor pain nor grief shall nigh themcome. (Wisdom of Solomon 3: I)

IV.How lovely is Thy dwelling place, 0 Lord of Hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea fainteth for the courts of the Lord; My soul and body crieth out, yea for the

living God. 0 blest are they that dwell within Thy house; they praise Thy nameevermore. (Psalm 84:1-2, 4)

V.Ye now are sorrowful, howbeit ye shall again behold me, and your heart shall bejoyful, and your joy no one taketh from you. (John 16:22)

Yea, I will comfort you, as one whom his own mother comforteth. (Isaiah 66: 13)

Look upon me; ye know that for a little time labor and sorrow were mine, but at

the last I have found comfort. (Ecclesiasticus 51:53)

VI.Here on earth have we no continuing place, howbeit, we seek one to come.(Hebrews 13: 14)

Lo, I unfold unto you a mystery: We shall not all sleep when He cometh, but weshall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the souod of the

trumpet. For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed. Then, what of old was written, the same shall bebrought to pass. For death shall be swallowed in victory! Death, where is thysting? Grave, where is thy triumph? (I Corinthians 15:51-52,54-55)

Worthy art Thou to be praised, Lord of honor and might, for Thou hast createdheaven and earth, and for Thy good pleasure all things have their being and werecreated. (Revelations 4: 11)

VII.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth. Saith the spirit, thatthey rest from their labors and their works do follow them.-(ReveIations 14:13)
