1996 TREASURER'S REPORT
Pamela Thompson
1996 Income
Income appears to be less satisfactory than it is, largely because four national branch payments were not received in 1996. Once these are taken into account, income from national branches should exceed expectations. Payments from many national branches came later than desirable, but an influx and return of members late in the year was most welcome and should be reflected in higher payments next year. For the first time, membership totalled over 2,000 at the end of the
year. Miscellaneous income was also less than hoped. Income from advertising and
from sales of the membership list was in fact more buoyant towards the end of the
year, although payments for these will not be recorded until 1997. Bank interest received was again very good, showing a return of 15.8% for the year. Donations to the Outreach Fund were again modest, although the fund was boosted by the subvention of 2.5% of association income which now accrues each year. A
summary of the fund follows this report.
1996 Expenditure
Expenditure was in many categories much as expected. The figures for produc tion of Fontes Artis Musicae are somewhat higher than they would otherwise have been, as extra copies of the Italian edition were published to be sold separately and A-R Editions purchased in advance a quantity of envelopes to reduce long term costs. Office expenses remained low. The IAML brochure was considerably less expensive than expected, but the List of Members cost considerably more than usual to produce and mail because of its increased size now that telephone, fax, and e-mail numbers are included. Travel costs were kept to a minimum, and officers continue to seek funding from other sources for travel to Board meetings and conferences. No payments were made from the Outreach Fund until early in 1997. Bank charges were higher than expected, largely because funds in Germany must be regularly transferred elsewhere to effect payments.
Summary
Despite all payments not being received, income still exceeded expenditure by DM 1,317.00. A healthier surplus is expected in 1997, as the increase in dues

brings higher income. In the following years, however, expenditure is likely to
outstrip income by a considerable margin unless membership increases as hoped. Careful consideration will need to be given to reducing costs or to increasing subscriptions in 1999, if accumulated reserves are not to sink to an unwise level.
It is recommended that Council reviews the guidelines for use of the Outreach Fund as subventions to it accumulate.
