Diagnostic Essay: Movie or Restaurant Review

You are assigned to write a 5 paragraph movie review. You may review any movie in theatres, on video, or on television (the movie does not need to be a recent release). In the first paragraph describe the genre (type of movie), when it was out, the people involved in the production, and state an overall opinion of the movie as your thesis. For the 3 body paragraphs, select 3 criteria to detail, such as the acting, plot, dialogue, music, setting, costumes, special effects, or cinematography. In each paragraph give an opinion of one of your criteria and provide 2 or 3 detailed examples that support your opinion. For your conclusion, restate your overall opinion in a different way and offer recommendations. Each paragraph should have topic sentence and be at least 5 sentences long.

You are assigned to write a 5 paragraph restaurant review. You may review any restaurant in your neighborhood from the hole in the wall to the elegant bistro. In the first paragraph describe the location, type of restaurant, and when you were there, and state an overall opinion of the restaurant as your thesis. For the 3 body paragraphs, select 3 criteria to detail, such as the food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness or menu selection. In each paragraph give an opinion of one of your criteria and provide 2 or 3 detailed examples that support your opinion. For your conclusion, restate your overall opinion in a different way and offer recommendations. Each paragraph should have topic sentence and be at least 5 sentences long.

Podcast Summary• You have listen to a podcast and

summarize it into a good paragraph worth of information.

• State the main idea in your topic sentence. In the next part of the paragraph describe at least 5 main points the podcast highlights. In the last couple sentences evaluate the usefulness of the information in the podcast.

• Be sure to proofread your writing, use spell-check, and submit your summary as a document (NOT in the comments box).

Internet Dangers and Safety Rules• This assignment has two parts!

• Part A: Write a 3 paragraph essay about potential internet dangers. Your first paragraph will be an introduction that describes 3 possible dangers that Internet holds. In the second paragraph discuss how Internet users can be wary of those dangers and avoid them. In your conclusion discuss ways the Internet community might someday eliminate these problems; be creative. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence and at least 5 sentences of development. Use specific examples to make your paragraph interesting and complete.

• Part B: Compile a list of 5-10 internet safety rules.

Internet Communication Project- Speech Rough Draft & Revision

• The speech is basically a mini-essay addressing the benefits of online communication. For the rough draft, you will write a paragraph of at least 11 sentences.

• For the Revised Speech, you MUST revise your speech. Many students consider adding a hook/lead/attention-getter to draw in the audience at the start of the speech. Add transition words. Check word choice and make sure it is formal and appropriate in tone. Add in more examples relevant to anyone who uses to anyone who uses the internet.

• You will not get credit if you do not revise your speech.

Persuasive Essay• You will be defending the villain in

a fairy tale by persuading your audience that he or she was set up. You will have to convince the audience that the villain has been misrepresented and his/her motives were misunderstood.

• In other words: the bad guy is really a good guy.

Persuasive Assignments• There are several assignments that build

up to the final draft, which will be a five-paragraph essay.

• Each of these assignments is based off of your fairy tale:• Title• Planning Document• Explain your Claim• Support your Claims• Intro/Conclusion Paragraphs• Editor

Creating an Advertisement• Assignment: Choose a name and design your

product. Write a one paragraph description of your product telling what it is and what it does, as well as what makes it unique. Submit your product design to your teacher.

• Assignment: Write the copy for your radio advertisement. Make sure it will run approximately 30 seconds. It must contain at least one of the advertising techniques you have studied in this unit. In a separate paragraph, indicate which advertising technique was used and describe exactly which lines in your ad use that particular technique.

• Produce your advertisement.

• For full credit you must record your advertisement! If you don’t you get 50%!
