Maintaining a down-to-earth aesthetic and bohemian feel, Holly Ryan spent time with Wrangler Womenswear Designer Marcella Bisset, brainstorming ideas and supplying myriad references. Even the 1973 cult movie The Holy Mountain sparked the resurrection of a rainbow patch from the Wrangler archives, which serves as the branding featured on every piece in the range. With Jane Birkin noted as a timeless muse for both brands, this limited-edition capsule will see the return of Wrangler’s iconic Hi Bells and further vintage inspired silhouettes in the form of Hi Pins, Pin Up shorts, a denim vest and cutaway romper. All of that denim, injected with a liberal dose of colour, seen in a zig-zag knitted halter top and summer dress. To complement the collaborative apparel offering, Holly also created a small capsule jewellery collection incorporating a mixture of zigzags and rainbows; two key components of the range. The jewellery mimics these concepts to create minimal, wearable pieces – fine necklaces, hook earrings and a zigzag bracelet, bangle and ring. All in all it’s the perfect collection for a girl who loves timeless vintage pieces, seventies styling and classic denim.

Khim Hang is the visionary young designer behind HAN, a label that hones in on considered tailoring, premium fabrications and future classics. Initially launching with a range of menswear in 2012, the past two years have seen Hang make his debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and evolve his label to include the realm of womenswear. This year also saw Hang named an Australian nominee for the prestigious Woolmark Prize, an experience he describes as “a big learning curve”. Most of all though, Hang says “It was an honour to be the youngest nominee since Karl Lagerfeld.” Hang says the collection he designed as part of the application process was about “reinforcing our brand value of modernising classics”. Indeed, the final look he created for HAN’s entry was a new take on a timeless classic; a trackpant-inspired pant, double-breasted jacket and fleeced bomber. “The whole idea was to reinvent the 3-piece suit,” Hang explains. “All of the pieces were cut from a conventional suiting fabric, used in an unconventional way and manipulated to work with the application.” The designer believes that the Woolmark initiative as a whole is an important one for our local wool industry. “Australian Merino wool is so special in the sense that there are so many qualities that differentiate it from any other natural textile,” he says. “It’s moulding qualities, heat retention and natural water-repellent capabilities are just a few points that consumers need to be more aware of.” It’s clear that Hang’s attention to detail and commitment to quality are paramount to his work. Employing premium textiles — many of which are sourced from Japan, Italy or France — HAN is a young label that is pushing boundaries and challenging the way we dress today. Hang’s sportswear-inspired designs are future classics that are carving out a new Australian aesthetic. “We aren’t trying to create something for everyone, that is trend or fad-based,” Hang clarifies. “But rather a distinct style that lingers on.” Coming from the designer whose earliest fashion memory is of a red tartan suit he wore on his third birthday, there’s no telling what Hang will do next. But one thing is for sure: we will be taking note.
