In writer’s workshop, we had our partners help edit our narratives 1D Newsletter April 6, 2017 Dear 1D Families, Our star of the week was Jack, and we enjoyed learning more about him!. Yesterday, students attended the Kids on the Block presentation by The Family Nurturing Center. Through a play with puppets, children learned about child abuse and the importance of telling trusted adults when something happens to make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Students listened respectfully and asked good questions of our speakers. Our story of the week was Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats. This text focuses on Peter, a boy who wants to whistle so that he can call to his dog. Our target skill was cause and effect, and we discussed how the effect is what happens and the cause is why it happens. We also learned about figurative language and how authors use interesting words to give us a better picture of events. Our Essential Question was “How can you take good care of a pet?” Our words to know were again, along, began, boy, father, house, nothing, and together. This week's grammar focus was on possessive pronouns your/yours, my/mine, his, and her. Our spelling focus this week included words with the vowel digraph /oo/. Finally, in Writer’s Workshop, we continued writing a personal narrative about a small moment. We discussed the difference between a How To book and a Narrative so that we could ensure we were doing the correct type of writing. In Math this week, we began Chapter 10 on representing data. We read picture graphs and bar graphs to interpret data. We also discussed that graphs have labels to tell what each side represents. These labels can help us create a relevant title for the graph. For example, if the labels are children and favorite ice cream, a good title would be “Favorite Ice Cream Flavors.” Students also learned how to create their own graph and to organize data with tally marks. Finally, we played Graph Game with our partners. In religion, we finished our Way of the Cross booklet. We began to talk about the Three Days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Tomorrow morning,

1D NewsletterApril 6, 2017Dear 1D Families,

Our star of the week was Jack, and we enjoyed learning more about him!.

Tomorrow morning, we will attend the Stations of the Cross performed by the 6th grade.

Monday is our first grade field trip to the Children’s Theatre to see Tarzan. Students should wear their field trip shirt or a spirit shirt with uniform bottoms. We will return in time for lunch!...Enjoy your weekend!

Peacefully,Miss DeLaney [email protected]

Ask your child about our learning...Language Arts

What lesson can we learn from Whistle for Willie? (Never give up, even when something seems hard.)

How many syllables are in “yellow?” What are the vowel sounds?

Choose the correct word to complete the sentence...”Let's go play at ___(my/they) house today.”

Math Does a graph tell us how to

count or does it tell us information?

What is the difference between a picture graph and a bar graph? (A picture graph has pictures of objects and a bar graph has colored bars.)

What parts of a graph help you make a good title? (the labels on the sides)
