Firm, fair, and consistent is the name of the game! To ensure optimum learning, students must be able to attend to instruction. Those that interfere with the learning of others will be disciplined. Expectations for student behavior are frequently visited.

Room B-4 Classroom ExpectationsAbove all, we the students of Room B-4 agree to:

1. Make good choices.

2. Solve problems.3. Show respect.

Rules and expectations are posted in the classroom. Specific rules that we discussed are:

keeping our hands, feet, and other objects to ourselves eyes watching, ears listening quiet mouth sit correctly try my best be respectful to others

Students are rewarded for good behavior with verbal praise, special privileges, and visits to the treasure chest.

Consequences include a verbal warning, deducting Dojo points, “Think Time” away from the group, missing recess, or email/phone call/note home. If inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be sent to the Principal, may be issued a citation, and a parent may be called in to discuss a student behavior contract.

*Check your student’s Dojo to see how they are doing.*Nightly Reading

Students should be read to nightly. As they develop reading strategies and recognizing sight words, they can begin reading these books to you! Students will be rewarded monthly for reading a book each night; please return your reading log weekly.

Nightly reading has a huge impact on student success in all subject areas and will establish reading and study habits for the upper grades.

Sight WordsPlease practice your sight word rings often. Retention and

fluency of these words will accelerate your child’s reading ability. Many beginners’ books are written primarily with these high-frequency, sight words.

Students are required to master them in groups of 25. Each set (of 4) will be sent home once the student masters the set before it. Please send the word rings to school when your child is ready to be tested. Our school and district benchmark expectation is that our kindergartners master all 100 words by the end of kindergarten.

AbsencesThe Fountain Valley School District does not receive ADA

excused absence. Please clear the absence on the day your child is absent from school with a phone call to the office or an e-mail to the teacher. You may request your child’s work for the day at that time, to

be picked up after school. You may also send a written note when your child returns to school.

Office Phone: (714) 378-4260, (714) 378-4261Teacher E-mail: [email protected]

TardiesYour child is tardy if he/she is not in the classroom at

8:15 A.M. All students who are late must first check in with the office. Tardies often disrupt the entire class, and may affect your child’s school work. Please help your child arrive on time.

AppointmentsPlease try to schedule all appointments (doctor, dentist,

etc.) outside of school hours. If your child must be pulled out of school for an appointment, please try to schedule it after our Language Arts and Math time blocks, which end at 11:30 A.M.

BirthdaysStudents will be recognized on their birthday. Our new policy at Oka is NO FOOD. If you would like to bring in small prize bags feel free to do so (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc.).

Another option is to bring in a wrapped book for your child to open that we can read in class.

Share DaysWe will devote time the last Friday of each month to share

things from home. Please be advised that the teacher and school are not responsible for items brought in for sharing. It is the student’s responsibility to bring in their share item and to take it home.

Students do not have to bring in a share item. If they do, please prepare them to discuss the following:

What it is? Where it is from? 3 facts about the item.

Field TripsWe will have at least two bus field trips this year. Please return the completed permission slips* promptly so that your child can participate. Parents will be notified regarding volunteers on the trip. *Please indicate whether or not your child will require a school prepared lunch – these will be charged to your child’s lunch account or the parent is responsible for the lunch IOU.
