News from the Principals

Hello and happy November! Just as with every month, November will be another busy one here at school. Please read the entire newsletter for important
information about upcoming events and happenings. It was great to see so many of you here enjoying Fall in the Hall last week! I think the students (and adults) had a fun time! We appreciate the donations of candy and treats!
Parents, if you returned papers for your child to receive the flu immunization, that will take place on the morning of Friday, November 4. Nurse Cissy will be organizing the students for this.
Please remember that Tuesday, November 8, there will be no school for students. This is Election Day, so exercise your right and privilege to vote! Also, there is a short survey attached to this newsletter. Please complete it and return to your child’s teacher by November 7. Thanks for your help.
On Friday, November 11, we will have our Veteran’s Day program. Our committee for this event has already been working to prepare for our program. This is a favorite day for many. Please remember those who served in our armed forces for our liberties and freedom. We will also have our school Spelling Bee on this day.
On Thursday, November 17, we will have Parent Conferences from 3:30 – 6:30. We will also be having three sessions for parents to attend as part of our After School Program. At 4:00, there will be a session demonstrating a lesson from the Fundations Reading program, a session demonstrating a lesson from the Wilson Intensive Reading program, and a session demonstrating “homework help.” These sessions will last about 30 minutes. Then, we will repeat these same sessions at 5:00. We are hoping that by planning two times for the sessions you will be able to join us either before or after your conference with your child’s teacher. Progress reports will come home the week of November 7-11.
Also, November 23, 24, and 25 will be our Thanksgiving Holidays. Enjoy the time with family and friends. We are especially grateful to be a part of this wonderful school. We have an amazing group of students, parents, friends, volunteers, teachers, and staff who make this a wonderful place to be. We are blessed to be here at Loudon Elementary. We wish you each a Thanksgiving season full of good food, love and warm memories.
Together for education, Kim Greenway

Pre-K NewsNovember in PreK is very busy. We will sing a song for
our Veterans, disguise a turkey, learn about fall and of course continue our alphabet letters. Since the weather is changing, please send a change of clothes appropriate for cold weather. Your child should also have a jacket or coat. Please rememeber to send a snack daily for your PreK student.Thank you for all you are doing to support your child and their teachers. We appreciate you!
Kindergarten NewsWe would like to thank all of our families that completed
the Pumpkin Character Project over fall break. They made a beautiful and very festive display at the main entrance into our school. The entire school was able to enjoy the creativity shown by our amazing kindergarten students. Also, thanks to everyone who participated in our annual Tomahawk Trot fundraiser. This event helps provide needed equipment and supplies for our school.
Please continue to work on letter names, letter sounds, and sight words. In math, we are focusing on counting, writing, and identifying numbers to 20. Also, we are learning to count to 100 by tens. Please complete the nightly homework assignments, including reading the weekly vocabulary reader.
We are thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of this very special time in your child’s life. We are thankful for the parents that love, support, encourage, and take the time every day to help their child be the best they can be.
First Grade News It is hard to believe that October has been here and is
gone! Thank you to all of you who joined us on our trip to the apple orchard. We are sure you had as much fun as the students did. If you came to our annual “Fall in the Hall”, you know that was another fun time for students and parents.
In Language Arts we will continue to work on fluency in our reading. Practice this at home by having your child read to you every night. Our new phonics program puts an emphasis on handwriting. Have you noticed the big improvement in being able to read what your child has written? We are adding different punctuation at the ends of our sentences ~ question marks and exclamation points.
In math we will continue to improve our skills in addition and subtraction through 20. We will also be working on speed and accuracy in addition and subtraction through 10.
Remember that we go outside every day. Be sure to send a jacket with your child because in East Tennessee the weather can change in an instant.
Second Grade NewsThis month has flown by. We had a great time with
our fairy tale unit! We are moving on to informational text this month. In math we are starting regrouping. Remember the field trip coming up on November 18!
Mrs. Rutherford’s ClassFocus on strengths, not weaknesses
Your child is not defined by his or her disability. A disability represents one area of weakness, but there are many more areas of strengths. Focus on your child’s gifts and talents. Your child’s life—and schedule—shouldn’t revolve around their disability. Nurture the activities where he or she excels, and make plenty of time for them. This will guide them to personal growth and success.
RTI NewsDear Parents,
I am writing to update you on the various skills we will be covering in RTI. Kindergarten will be working on letter names and sounds. The upper grades will be working on short and long vowel sounds, word building and sound recognition of specific letters, blending sounds, identifying and creating oral rhymes, spelling words from teacher dictation, and sentence building from teacher dictation. We will also practice choral readings of high frequency words and short stories, fluency and comprehension activities, along with identifying cause and effect using graphic organizers and main idea.
Thank you so much for your continued support!
Ms Broussard (Ms. B)

Third Grade News
Fall is in the air and the days are getting shorter. This is a perfect season to spend time with your child discussing the changing of the leaves, the seasons, and observing the night sky together. As you enjoy the outdoors, it is a great time to make arrays with acorns or falling leaves and have your child determine the multiplication facts that go along with them. It is also a good time to curl up with an enjoyable book together. Remember to discuss the main idea and supporting details, the sequence of events in the story, and why certain events take place. Lastly, it is important for your child to be able to “re-tell” the story to you in his/her own words.
Remember that we will be spending time outside unless the temperature is below 40 degrees. It is important that your child has a warm jacket each day if the temperature is going to be cool.
We are very thankful for all of the additional help you give your children. You are doing a great job. We are seeing many students improving in their reading and math skills. Thanks again, and may you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving season.

Fourth Grade NewsWe can’t believe October is already gone! We appreciate
everyone who came out to our Fall in the Hall night. It was lots of fun! Please encourage your child to practice his/her math facts.
Many of the students who are struggling in Math are having difficulty due to their lack of fact fluency.
Now that the weather is beginning to cool down, please make sure that your child has his/her jacket at school each day. Our classrooms are often cool in the mornings, and we will go outside for recess if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.
Thank you for continuing to encourage your child to be responsible, respectful, and safe each day. Any student who does not maintain an A in conduct all year or has in-school or out-of-school suspension will not be eligible to participate in our incentive field trip/day which will take place at the end of the school year.
We really appreciate all that you do to ensure that your child is at school and ready to learn each day. We feel blessed to be a part of your child’s life. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
Fifth Grade NewsSupply request: 5th grade is running out of some classroom supplies. We would appreciate donations of pencils, boxes of tissues, hand sanitizer. 5th grade field trip: 5th grade will be going to see the play A Christmas Carol at the Clarence Brown Theatre on December 9th. We will be having lunch at Tyson Park in Knoxville as well. Permission slips & fee information has been sent home in your child's weekly folder. The fees & permission slips were due on Friday, October 28th. Election Project: The reading/social studies classes will be doing a mini research project on the Election 2016 the week of October 31st. Your child will be researching each candidate & creating a brochure on the candidate they prefer based on their research. We will actually have a presidential vote on Monday, November 7th. We look forward to this project!
