Greetings to all, and welcome to a new year of excellence in motoring.

Last month, I recapped the 2001 driving season and thanked all of those who helped make the year a tremendous success. This time, I'd like to give you an update on where we stand at the start of the year and let you know what we have in store forthe upcoming year.

As of December 1, we have 129 paid members ofthe GTA. We've ended every year in recent history with about the same number. However, this year I've noticed a lot of former members have rejoined the GTA after various periods of absence. Most have told me that they've been hearing good things about t he Club and have visited our web site to see what we have been doing. I look forward to their involvement in future events.

We had a wonderful year in 2001, which is evident from the attendance rosters from all ofthe events we attended together.

There were 14 official gatherings (not including business meetings), with an average attendance of 10 cars and 23 members per event. If you do a little simple multiplication, that comesto 140 cars, and 322 members - which would represent about every car and member in the clu~. Interesting statistics, indeed. The Georgia Trumpet Janaury 2002

From the Editor:

My name is Paul Logue and I begin this year as editor for the GTA newsletter.

As many of you know, being a volunteer in a recreational sport is a time consuming commitment Few people know how much time Ken Yokelson has given to the GTA as newsletter editor over the past five years. We must thank him for his service to the GTA

Someone has said that the editor is the one that holds the club together. Although itmay appear that way to some, it is certainly not the case. More correctly, it is the nelVs/et1er itself, the membership and good GTA leadership that holds the club together. It has been my experience in other clubs, that the newsletter is only as . good as the members in the club. There are about 120 members in the GTA. Twenty may show up at the monthly meetings and maybe 30 or so at road events during the year. So that means that nearly 100 members are not making contact with the club in some visible way, either because of distance or convenience, but want to be a part of this LBC group. The newsletter is their connection to the club and it lets these members know what the club and all its members are doing throughout the year.

An editor can produce the letter, but this person should not be expected to write it; there is a big difference. I have told this to our Director, George Forster, and he understands. The GTA board would like for the newsletter to be written by the members. This means that we need input from the members. It can be as simple as telling about your current health. If a member is going into the hospital for a medical condition, we should know abOut it If you are making repairs to your LBC and want to share, write and ten us what you are doing. If you attend an event and look around to find few GTAers present, decide which of you will submit an article about the event. Orpemaps all can do so, giving different views of what you have seen. For those of you who are unable to be physically visible in the club's activities, please make your membership known by submitting letters of your activities to the GTA newsletter. Your input can also be in the form of "Letters to the GTA" expressing your feelings about what is going on in the GTA. You may send information to mt: at our post office addK--ss below-or send it to my email-address. We are going to try and use photos as well as text I have approached some of our members to make regular contributions to the letter, and I will be asking others as the year moves along.

This first letter of the year is personal in that it includes your profile, as we know it Since this is renewal time, we are asking you to check this profile, correct if necessary, and return it with your 2002 dues if you haven't done so already. We have asked for new information on this form, so please look it over carefully. This information will be used for labels and a new membership directory. Please let us hear form you.

great success. joe is publishing his scoring system elsewhere in the newsletter and wJII keep a running total for each member on the GTA web site. In general, if you drive your TR, or come to any GTA events, you will be eligible for a few points. Also, if you contribute to the operation of the club, in any way,you will also be awarded points. We'll be sending out updates ofthe top scores throughout the year. Stay tuned!

Our December business meeting focused on ideas for the 2002 calendar. We are going to make an . effort to coordinate events with the Peachtree MG Register again this year, so we can share the tasks of planning. This proved to be very successful last year, and I expect more ofthe same this year.

I caught a lot offiack from a few folks when Ifirst suggested teaming up with the MGs a few years ago. At that time, we we.re getting 4-7 cars showing up at the few events that were announced. If you've ever planned a party or gathering for a crowd and only 4 people showed up, you'll understand how depressing it is to start planning the next one.

On our last drive in September, we had 30 cars come outto drive with us - over halfwere GTA members. The moral of the story is that we had less work to do as a club (5 of our 14 events were not

planned by GTA members). This gave us more time to enjoy ourselves, and allowed us to meet a few more enthusiasts in the process.

If you have any ideas for an event that you'd like to see, please let us know, and we will do everything possible to see that it is incorporated into the schedule. If we don't get to it this year, we will make it a priority for next year.

The Big Event this year, will be the VTR Regional Convention, which will be held in jekyll Island in October. This is the first regional event that the GTA has hosted in over 10 years. The committee is gaining momentum, and is growing weekly. I stronglyencourage all GTA members to consider attending the event. Details ofthe event will be published as they develop. GTA member Grant Robertson will be hosting the official web site of the convention. We expect to have the site up and ready for registrations in january. This will be the first Southeast Regional where complete online registration will be available. We're looking to a very successful event.

As always, my goals invglve getting the members of the GTA involved with the activities of the Club. If your car is not running, or is in restoration, you can still participate in Club activities. A few members have attended events in "regular cars" while the TR was laid up. The sight of a few dozen noisy LBCs running down the road is a great motivator to finish up a slowmoving project.

We're also hopingto have at least o·ne event toward the center ofthe state this year. We have a number of members who live south of Atlanta, who are unable to participate in many events due to the distance involved. Of course, the "northern" members will be welcome to attend, as well. .

If you notice a new look to the newsletter, it's because of our new editor, Paul Logue. Paul joined the GTA about five years ago, and has been very active with us in the past few years. His beautifully restored Spitfire has captured many awards at various shows, and he's logged quite a few miles between shows. His wife, Vicki, has become a regular at our outings, as well.

Paul has been soliciting contributors for a few months now. He has accumulated quite a staff of GTA members to help with newsletter wntent. Also, he has plans to have all of the letters printed, rather than copied. This will cost us a bit more, but it will allow a good quality for publishing p hotogra phs.

We will also offer the newsletter for electronic distribution for anyone who would prefer to print his or her own (in color). If you're not sure if you'd

like this, just ask for a sample. Contact Paul for details.

We've been making a few other personnel changes, too. Mike Hurst has been appointed to the post of Membership Director. Mike will be contacting all new members, to make sure that they get off to a good start with the Club. One of the complaints that I have received in the past was from new members who joined a club, got a newsletter, but never heard from anyone in the Club until it was time for another dues check. Mike will see to it that every new member is properly welcomed, and is provided all ofthe infqrmation and

-encouragement necessary to become an active participant in the GTA.

There are still a few other positions that we're trying to fill. If anyone is interested in handling the ordering and distribution ofGTA Regalia (clothing, souvenirs, etc.), please get in touch with me. We are currently using several vendors for shirts, hats, decals, etc. Organizational skills are a plus.

Overall. we are hoping to provide ayear of activities similar to last year. Two significant exceptions will be that you will see more GTA members taking on the .responsibilities of running the Club and that we are committing ourselves to hosting the VTR Southeast Regional Convention in October: .

. Be safe and have a prosperous New Year. I look forward to meeting more of you in 2002.

2001 Annual BOZO Award In recognition ofthe individual whose

performance of a task was not equal to his . capability.

Very simply, it is awarded to an individual in recognition of the individual whose performance of a task was not equal to his capability. Historical\>" it goes to a person who is very capable and in this case, it is surely very true. Kevin Bowen always has a high profile at the events he attends. On road events, he is always in the middle of any needed mechanical repair. And making the awards for the Atlanta British show was memorable to say the least

All that being said, very capable people are subject to moments of mental letdowns and that is what we observed on our fall trip to the mountains of North Carolina. Kevin, Mike and I were among about 20 cars touring the North Carolina mountains during our weekend stay in Flat Rock, NC. Mike' and I were directly behind Kevin as we rolled through the beautiful hills of NC. It was Mike who observed the left rear tire of Kevin's TR6 beginning to come apart. He waived for Kevin to stop and the entire train of cars did so at one of the beautiful overlooks. As we looked at the tire, it

was obvious that it would soon come completely apart and needed to be changed as soon as possible. The weekend had involved a two nights stay in Flatrock and so the boots of all the LBCs were packed pretty full. Kevin handed Mike his lug wrench and then began systematically emptying his boot onto the ground in order to get to the spare tire compartment. From just behind Mike, and like many others, I began admiring the beautiful scenery from the view nearby. I glanced down over Mike's shoulder and noticed that he was turning the lugs clockwise. I said to him, "Mike, what are you doing, why are you tightening the nuts?" He said, without missing a beat, "he doesn't have a spare." I looked at Kevin and

he was "systematically" repacking his boot. He didn't appear to be upset or really surprised, but just knew that his stuff had to go back in the boot. Now there were several other 6s' present and

they had spares, but one was a mismatch and the others were airless. Now Kevin not only didn' t have a spare with air, he not only didn't have a spare, Kevin didn't know he was without a spare until he unloaded his boot onto the road in front of that beautiful overlook. That is why he has been awarded the BOZO award for 2001.

There are plates on the plaque for names through 2010. Kevin ~ will keep this plaque for the year 2002, at which time he will present

the award to another deserving GTA member. At the end of the decade, it will then go back to Kevin permanently. If the tradition makes it that far, a new plaque can be made and the tradition can continue.

Viewpoint by Paul Logue

Welcome to the inaugural appearance af

Viewpoint In this letter, I am introducing this column, but in the future I will only be a reader. This column is dedicated to presenting views from GTA members. They can be positive as well as negative, but in all cases it is a member's point of view with regard to the world ofthe GTA and{orthe LBC.

Recently, Ashford Little initiated an impromptu "pub night" for GTA members and friends. This was done through the GTA 111aillist and was held at old English Pub in Buckhead. When I saw the invitation, I asked Ashford to have someone keep minutes afthe gettogether and send them to me for the GTA newsletter. So Ashford becomes ournrst contributor to Viewpoint:

«Hey Paul, we kept the minutes on a laptop computer throughout the meeting, but the server crashed sometime after the third beer; must have been a virus.

In all seriousness, I would like to see regular pub nights. The more casual atmosphere and the lack of club business ' allow the attendees to talk about Triumphs and that is what it is all about By having regular pub nights, we could also rotate it around the city to accommodate club members. I think pub nights ought to be held quarterly. Casual get-togethers allow members to not only talk Triumphs, but also might attract from our pool of less visible members.

Food for thought, or is it "hops" for thought?"

By Ashford Little II, GTA Member

In years past, pub nights have been a regular event on the GTA calendar, but have become less frequent in recent years. Held in different locations around the dty, they could be a "mini" event on the calendar and serve to attract some GTA members who are unable to attend some of our regular events during the year. Although these meetings are traditionally held at a sports bar, attendees are not required to indulge in alcohol. As Ashford says, it is mainly a chance to get together and talk Triumphs. 1

Fuel Smell! by Mike Hurst, GTA Member

,

On the night of the big banquet in Hendersonville, NC, I was at the Briarwood Motel, changing fuel filters on a certain unnamed, single, kinda looks like Jeff Gordon, GTA member's, bright red, lowered, dual exhausted 1975 TR6. It was brought to my attention by my bride and timekeeper that we were suppos~d to be on our way PDQ ....... I dashed u.nder the shower and emerged smelling just like Texaco regular gasoline. Knowing from previous experience that this is an odor that lingers, and wanting to be . included in the evening's frivolities, I was in dire straits. A serious rummage through my kit bag produced only Mennen Speed Stick Gel, which guess what, works great! Slather that stuff on, Ocean Breeze, Mountain Airs, or what have you, rub it in and you are considered a member of society again.

Firstly, this story is entirely BS (before Sue, my wife) and took place when I lived in Melbourne Australia, 1973 through 1977. I owned a 1963 Spitfire.l.l-, not even recognized as

In the morning we met up with the happy couple and were invited to a prewedding bash being put on by her folks over in New South Wales, some 35 miles away. The girlfriend just had to do some shopping and by the time we set out it was dusk. I should at this point in the story give you a weather report; been raining for the last 10 days. Should also mention this young lady was very tall and flat refused to ever wear a seat belt. The directions I was working from were

At any rate we were supposed to cross the Milder River and turn left at the school house, only it was at the second school house, not the first. We're running late, it's dark now and I am trying to make up lost time on this dirt road doing about 70 when we hit standing water, about six inches deep. Water everywhere, can't

Autocross by Michael Campsmith, GTA Member

Ladies and Gentlemen-START YOUR ENGINES!!

Sure, your Little British

Car is cute, but have you ever wanted to rev the engine, squeal the tires, and zoom through the corners just like a real racer? Well, here's your ch a nce!l ....... "------

The. Atlanta Region of the Sports Car Club of America holds nearly a dozen autocross events per year right here in Atlanta. What is autocross, you ask? It is a timed, skilled driving competition on a closed course, usually a large parking lot. Drivers take turns negotiating a course defined by orange traffic cones and race against the clock. The courses are laid out to keep speeds safe, but the action is still fast and furious. This is a fun, safe way to pl.ay "Speed Racer" for a day.

The first event in 2002 is an autocross school and tune-up day on February 16 & 17 at the Lakewood Amphitheater parking lot. I will contact the SCCA rep and get the details on equipment requirements, costs, etc. I would like the GTA to be able to run as a group, so I will see if we can make that happen. You do not need to be an SCCA member to participate.

More'details will follow at our monthly meetings and in the newsletter. For q uestions {comments {suggestions please contact me at 770-414-8233 or [email protected].

Advertisement from Stillwater Services . .

Thank you to those t~at have trekked out to the new STILLWATER SERVICES location. I appreciate your visits and hope that you liked what you saw.

Instead of putting a lot of stuffhere about my business, I would like to give you some tips foryourcars. These two showed up last month, on the same car!

First - when you put new carpet in your car, do not glue the pad/insulation to the floor, then glue the caIpet to the pad and to every other piece of crupel:.. 1bis makes a monolithic floor covering that looks great; but it is almost impossible to remove without ruining something. When you pull it apart, it will stretch. at best:, or rip at worst.

Now if your car is perfect and will never break, then you may glue it all together. Of course, if this were the case, you would not be driving a British car.

Second --When using new wheel knock-offs, save them for shows. No one wants to tif:ihten new ones enough. When you drive with loose wheels, you wear out the splined hubs ap.d the inside of the wheel. You will also hear a lot of clopping noise when you let the clutch out.

If you just have to use those new knock-offs all the time, please grease them correctly. All mating surfaces should get some grease. The splines get the most. Next, wipe some on the inner most angled surface of the wheels (only a little please). Then, grease the threads and the inner angled surface of the new knock-offwell.

When you fail to grease this inner angled surface, so much . friction will build up where it mates with the wheel that you will never get it tight enough. This was what I found. Once I got the knock-off off without damage and greased it, I could tighten it over a full tum more.

To see ifit is toQ late for your wheels, carefully feel inside the splines. The top edges should be dull, not sharp and pointed. If, as you slide your finger over the edges, youfee1 a step on them, this is wear. It should not be there. If the wheels are not too worn, you can still use them as long as you get the knock-off tightiijustuse a betterhamrner. When greasing, use a wheel bearing grease, not oiL .

Now a little about the business, I still do a limited amount of general work. I only have room for one or two cars at the time. The shop labor rate is $50.00 per hour. For all club members, there is a 10% discount on all labor and parts. Also, remember my parts deal on orders over $500.00. Please call ifl canbe of service to you in any way.llookforward to hearing from you.

GTA Tips for Tour Driving ByJeremy Whitehead, GTA

I. Safety Equipment - Use it. If your car is equipped with seat belts, put them

on. That should go without saying, but oftentimes, people forget or don't like the way they fit. If you have them, use them. They could save your life.

2. Turn on your headlights . Not only does this make you more visible to oncoming traffic; it

helps the tour leader see you and allows him to keep the group together.

3. Stay together Don't allow huge gaps in between you and the car in front of

you. By the same token, don't ride his bumper either. Stay with him, but don't run over him either. This keeps the group together and prevents non-tour cars from breaking up the group.

4. Rollback room Most of our cars are manual gearboxes so when stopped at an

. intersection, leave room for the fellow in front of you to rollback should he need it.

5. Use radios Cheap ($18.88) two way radios are available from Wal-Mart.

We have been using the ones with the BellSouth brand name that have 14 channels. They seem to work well and are inexpensive so if you break one, it's not the end of the world. Generally, a radio channel will be announced at the drivers meeting .

6. Follow the directions . If you have a passenger, have them check off the directions at

each turn. Don't make the mistake of following the car in front of you as sheep can get lost very easily.

12

7. You are responsible for the car behind you. If you make a tum, make sure the car behind you saw you tum

and knows where you're headed. If you can ' t see the car behind you, slow down and wait on him. Hopefully the car in front of you is paying attention and will wait on you and so on.

8. Carry a spare and some tools This is very important to keep you from receiving the GTA Bozo

award. It's a good idea to carry ajug of water, EMPTY gas can, jumper cables, and a small tool roll with the essentials. It's also recommended to carry a spare (with air) (that fits your car) and ajack(thatworks).

9. Don't be a showoff Use your head when you drive. Don't push you car too hard and

risk hurting yourself or others by hot dogging it. It may be fun for the moment, but the results can last a lifetime.

10. Top off with Gas and Oil when you have the chance BEFORE you get out on the road with the group, make sure you

have a full tank of gas and plenty of oil on the dipstick. Please don't IT).ake the group wait because you "thought you could make it."

Polar Bear Run 2001 by Jeremy Whitehead, GTA

Well, this year's Polar Bear Run is in the history books as is 2001 for that matter. It's been a great year and the GTA wrapped it up with a fantastic run to Mentone, Alabama. The run started off with breakfast at the Cartersville Cracker Barrel followed by the drivers meeting. Once we got started, we headed northwest and quickly ditched US41 in favor of the backroads. Shortly after the run began we had an incident whereby Paul and Vicki Logue's immaculate Spitfire suffered a drivers side rear axle failure. The wheel left the car and was dragging on the undercarriage. Fortunately, it was reported to me that everyone was ok and the Spitfire, while damaged, is repairable. Knowing Paul, the Spitfire won't be down too long and he'll have back on the road soon. Several of the group stopped with them and a tow truck was called to fetch the disabled Spitfire. After stopping for a rest while we waited on those who stopped with Paul and Vicki, we continued on towards our destination.

Bad luck struck again when we had another incident whereby a Mini accidentally ran into the back of Bob and Marilyn Bryan's '70 GT6+. Now this is an example of the spirit of the GT A at it's best. Both cars had suffered some damage and the Mini driver decided to limp home followed by another Mini who lived near him to ensure he made it all right. Bob Bryan however calculated the damage and decided to make some repairs on the spot and

Just got back and am trying to get my fingers to warm up a bit, but boy what fun. Thanks to Jeremy and George for their usual stellar job of organizing these driving events. And thanks to the weather gods for making the day a great day to get out and drive these old cars.

continue on. George had called me via cell phone and relayed the situation so I stopped the rest of the group in the nearby town of Lyerly for a bathroom break while we awaited the rest. Soon it was decided that the rest of us would continue and Bob, George and the others would catch up when they had finished the repairs.

The lead group arrived in Mentone and promptly headed towards Desoto State Park, which is about 10 miles out of town along the top of a fabulous mountain ridge. As we were by this time starving, we started the lunch buffet, which consisted of roast pork, frje~ chicken, veggies and peach cobbler for dessert. A short time later, the rest of the group arrived to a round of applause for their heroic efforts in making repairs and continuing the trip. The hungry few were What some GTAers will do to make a GTA Tour!

quickly seated and proceeded to make up Hi Paul, for lost time at the buffet line.

After lu~ch, some decided to make use of their tirrl! by 3E'i:i:ing a tour map and heading off for a quick drive of the area. Some of us drove down to nearby Desoto falls and enjoyed the view afforded by 70 foot spectacular waterfall. It had

been decided that we would meet up back in town for the return trip home. We met up at the White Elephant antique mall, which is really a huge old rambling house,

Sharon and I were in attendance for the Polar Bear Run in Steven's TR6. We left right after lunch so we could get home to pack for our trip to Miami. We arrived today (Sunday) at 5:30 pm. It was a long drive - especially after doing 210 miles with the clubl

converted to booths for antique dealer.

The ride nome was rather uneventful and was marked by Robbie Hall's traditional passing of the leader (several times). We had decided to try and make it back to the Atlanta metro area before nightfall and that was easily accomplished. All in all, it was a very enjoyable day and we couldn't have asked for better driving weather. Michael Altomare Many even had their tops down, which was admittedly a tad more than Angie or I wanted to deal with.

On a final note, I would like to say a personal thank you to all you that came out and participated. More than one has commented to me that the GTA is what it is because we have so many members willing to participate and drive their cars. Sure, we have the occasional breakdown, but it's the positive spirit of those like Bob Bryan and others who simply pull out the tools and go to work when something happens that keeps the club going. Their willingness to get involved and show up at events makes it more enjoyable for the entire group. Once again ... thank you all for a wonderful 2001!
